SLAMMING THE OPPOSITION: PHI SLAMMA SOPHS GO 24-8 he Sophomore boys' basketball team had a superb season. At the start of the season, Vines coach Steve Adair preached, Teamwork is the key, move without the ball, and make the extra pass. Teamwork was the key, and for the first twelve games Vines perfected their leader's strategy. After winning five games, the Vikings entered the Mansfield J.V. Tournament as the only tenth grade squad. With hustle and hard work, the sophs pulled off all three games against powerful teams. Vines brought home the first of three tournament trophies and the first of two first place trophies. The Vikings won one more game and entered their own tournament. Vines, on its home court, whipped three more teams to put the final first place trophy into the trophy case. People started talking about the Vikings' astonishing 12-O record. Then there was the thirteenth game of the season. Before the game, the Vikings were thinking undefeated The football team had been 9-O, and the basketball team going undefeated would show that Vines was untouchable. The battle was at Shepton in front ofa packed house. Shepton, with its crowd and unbelievable shooting, pulled off an upset. The Vikings began to show a downfall. Plagued by injuries, the Vikings finished the season 12-7 with a streaky second half. Overall, the season was a screaming success. With combined team effort, hard work, and great coaching, the Vikings showed Plano and the world that working together can accomplish anything.
