Perfect!! he Vines Viking Sophomore football team finished their regular season with a spotless record of 9-O. The lone sour note of the year was a 3-1 loss to L.D. Bell's ..l.V. team in a pre-season scrimmage. The loss was avenged with a 28-6 victory in the eighth game of the season. Head coach Gary Brazil felt that the loss was a turning point in the Soph's season making them realize that wins wouldn't come easily. The Vikings had a rude awakening to the fact that a lot of hard work was in front of them. They were no stranger to hard work, though. With the determination and perserverance that led them through a tough off-season and two-a-days, the team found it in themselves to reach down and find the extra effort deep within themselves. The Vikings were a team with a mission that each player intended to finish, and finish on top. That they did. A- little luck didn't hurt either. The team didn't score until the last minute of the fourth quarter against Lewisville for a 6-0 win. The closest call, though, came against Berkner when with the Vikings leading 21-20 with less than :30 remaining. On first down Berkner threw a pass that went all the way for a touchdown. The Viking sideline was deadly silent. Then the referee called the ball back because the back had stepped out of bounds. Vines went on to win. That was the luck. Several wins, though, came with such scores as a 35-0 thrashing of Shepton. With a crushing defense that boasted four shut-outs and allowed only seven points a game, and a potent offense that scored 30 per contest, the Vikings overcame all. None of the season would have been possible, though, if it weren't for the enthusiasm of the coaches- Gary Brazil, Kevin Patterson, and David Priddy.
