YEARBOOK Through Calm And Crises You, as a student here atVines, have no idea whatsoever of the ob- stacles that we, as yearbook staff members, were forced to overcome. When the year began, no one would have guessed what was to befall us. Back then, in the old days, we were blissfully unconscious of the events of this school year. For the first three days of classes, we saw our advisor, Miss Tillery, daily. We discovered what we would be doing throughout the year, and we began making, losing, and de- stroying layouts. These ill-fated lay- outs were drawn on large sheets of graph paper, called quads, which came in triplicate and showed the positions of assorted pictures, arti- cles, and captions. Each layout was a diagram for one page that you now see in this yearbook. Interviews were done and pictures were taken, the body copy was writ- ten, edited, and re-written, and the film disappeared or was destroyed. One co-editor, Chris Brooks, took to banging his head against the wall, and the other, Joron Hulett, drifted precariously close to a nervous breakdown. Once the missing film was found and developed, each re- porter began to mercilessly hound the photographers for the actual printed pictures. Once the photo- graphs were in hand, they were cropped to fit the allotted spaces on the appropriate layout. Then a cap- tion was written for each picture and typed, and everything for each page was placed in a large paper envelope, or sleeve, and proofed by the edi- tors. In November, Mrs. Dooley re- placed Miss Tillery, who was mar- ried and set out to begin the tasks required for living happily ever after. Mrs. Dooley brought to the year- book offices a semblance of neat- ness, besides providing her English- teacher mind for accurate proof- reading. However, since her journal- ism experience was limited, th staffs progress became slower. W began missing deadlines, and poo Joron's state of hysteria worsened. Then, as the staff hovered jus above destruction, help arrived. Ou of the blue, like a knightess in shin ing armor, came Mrs. Pollard to res cue us from the darkness. With he help, we survived the year and th dread of the visits from the Josten' representative. We all thank Mrf Pollard for getting our heads abov water once more. So, here you look at the results c our labors. Through thick and thir we've done our best, and you hold i your hands the final product. W hope you are proud of your yearboo and of Vines High School. 1986-8 has been a memorable year, so re member that you and your friends, i minds and hearts, will be togethe forever. work.

wb SPEECH: THE BAS C The N.F.L. organization deals with the speaking talents of people throughout the United States. It helps these people develop their tal- ents so that they can learn to speak in an organized fashion. The two classes that are dealing with the N.F.L. organization here at Vines are Debate and Oral Interpretation. Debate deals with a student's ability to argue both sides of an issue in an organized manner. Oral Interp. helps the students involved to act and perform portions or cuttings of plays. Once the students learn the basics at the beginning of the year, the speech squad goes to tourna- ments at different schools in the Dal- las area and competes with students from other schools. If they do well, they qualify for the state tournament which this year was held in Dallas. This year six people on the squad qualifed for the T.F.A. state tourna- ment. The speech team gained new members throughout the school year, and the members got degrees when they reached certain levels of N.F.L. points. The students got these N.F.L. points when they went to meets and competed. Many of these points were gained throughout the school year which means that not only does Vines have a strong chap- ter, but the students also have confi- dence in themselves and in their abilities.
