SWEET TALKING MAN l ou got your salisbury steak, you got your mashed potatoes the drill team is sponsoring a bake sale at all three lunches today . . . the student council has a meeting after school to- morrow . . . over the intercom system at Vines come these simple, plain, statements in a soft, easy-to-listen-to voice. Made at the beginning of sec- ond period shortly after nine thirty-three in the morning, are the P.A. announcements. Benny Smith, one of the assis- e tant principals of Vines makes I th announcements every Kevin McKinney makes his com- on the lunch menu known. Members of the speech team gather id to listen to one of their own nouncements about a successful rnament. morning he can. With his authoritive, informing voice, Mr. Smith adds a little spice and excitement to make each different message interesting for all to listen. ln announcing meetings of the drama club, science club, or student council, to tell of important after school activi- ties such as football games or basketball games, and also to inform everyone of the daily cafeteria menu, the PA. sys- tem at Vines proves to be very useful. Without it, how would students know that their schedule changes were ready near the beginning of each se- mester or what time and how much each social costs? ln special cases, such as sponsored socials, students re- presenting the sponsoring group are often allowed to go to the office to make an- nouncements. To entice other students to come to socials, students and teachers use their imaginations to write up interesting scripts to be used over the PA. system. ln these cases, the PA. system helps certain groups earn money to do their own extra activities. But the real reason announce- ments are so fun to listen to is Mr. Smith, who, without his game-show-host-like quality, the announcements would be- come simply plain, dull an- nouncements.

Renee Loncar concentrates on Mr. Smith's voice to keep awake during her second peri- od class. The American history class puts everything on hold until the end of the announcements.
