K . 1, . -s . Jennifer Schmal, classes. Putting together a yearbook is a thankless job for those on the staff. When the books finally arrive, all staff members have a terrific case of fear. Will it look o.k.? Did the sponsor really design a knock-out cover? Did the plant mess up? What if I really messed up? All these questions go through the minds of the staffers. Most of the time, the student body is unaware of the little mistakes that cause staffers to moan and groan. Then suddenly the apprehension is turned to something else. Pride. Pride in their accomplishment. And worth the trou- ble. Worth the sponsor being on their backs twenty- four hours a day for seven months. Seven months of arguing with photographers and each other. And amid the pride, there are smiles and concillatory congratulations. This year's Odyssey staff had some pretty hefty footsteps to follow. The 1984-85 yearbook walked away with first and second place in the country's two most prestigious journalistic associations. How- ever, it is important that the 1985-86 staff know that they filled those shoes. Surpassing all expecta- tions of the sponsor, the staff put together the most innovative, creative and well-written yearbook in Vines' history. It is inadequate to say thank you . The book is excellent. You, the 1985-86 staff of The Odyssey, will never be forgotten and most certainly, sorely missed. 263

oyle Walker, our esteemed Princi- pal, is another mem- ber of the Vines High School staff who has been with the school since its opening in the 1976-77 school year. Mr. Walker moved over from a position as one of the assistant prin- cipals at Plano Senior High to be at Vines to give him- self a chance to help more students more closely. For four years Mr. Walker served as Assistant Princi- pal at Vines. According to Mr. Walker, Vines has had to prove itself against negative publicity which started before the school was built. lt was one of the only schools to be built in an already devel- oped neighborhood, and people who lived nearby the school weren't sure what to expect. But with a positive attitude, Mr. Walk- er walked around the areas close to the school to meet and assure neighbors that everything was going to work out very well. Before he was an Assis- tant Principal in the Plano Independent School Dis- trict, Mr. Walker taught three years of world history. During his fourth year, Plano Senior High opened and he decided to go into administration. Although he misses teaching, Mr. Walk- er feels that there are more opportunities in administra- tion. He can also touch more lives. Since 1980, Mr. Walker has been principal of Vines. He feels being Principal is more difficult than his previous position because now he has the re- sponsibility of being in charge of the entire school. He knows all state laws on education, does all the hir- ing of staff members, and supervises all activities. Since the first few years of Vines, everything has settled down. Now there is positive recognition from higher test scores and ex- cellent athletic programs. Students participate more in extra-curricular activities to prove their spirit and love for Vines. Any high school has problems, but with an excellent staff and good positive teen-agers, most problems take care of themselves, Mr. Walker said. lVlr. Walker is one of DEDICATION the reasons that Vines High School is the great school that it is today, and it is be- cause of this that we dedi- cate our yearbook to him. Thank you, Mr. Walker, for all you have doneifor Vines.
