i 3 THE WCRLD 0F THE '80'S he 1980's have also been witness to many eye- catching events. ln July of 4984, for example, the entire world watched as Lady Diana Spencer wed future king of Eng- land, Charles lvIountbattan-Wind- sor, at St. Paul's Cathedral in Lon- don. John Hinkley, Jr. tried to as- sassinate President Ronald Rea- gan. Over in Rome, Pope John A Paul ll was shot in the hand. Amer- ica also came close to having the first woman vice-president when Geraldine Ferarro ran with Demo- cratAWalter Mondale in the 4984 election. The film industry brought Wolf- gang Amadeus' life to the screen in the award winning Ama- deus . Television saw the return of Bill Cosby in The Cosby Show . VCR's gained popularity in the homes, and video-rental be- came a flourishing business. Many 2 Mrs. Dreyer played the big, bad wolf in years past. if . Princess Grace of Mon- cao Qformerly Grace Kellyy was killed in a car accident. Henry Fonda, Rock Hudson, and Orson Welles all passed away. The 4980's have also show ad- vanced technology being put to good and bad use. The good news was that Barney Clark was the first recipient of the world's first artificial heart. The bad news was that 4985 was the worst year for air travel what with hljackings and destructive crashes ending the lives of many passengers.
