FOURTH IN THE NATION y ualifying to compete in any notional championship is an honor reserved to a very few. However, for the past two years the girls on the sopho- more cheerleading squad have done just that. Competition for regional qualifications to the na- tional championship came in October, and the squad tools top honors competing against some 400 other cheerleaders for the right to represent a five- state area in Orlando, Florida in December for a chance at the national title. Competing against squads from all fifty states, the sophomores were named to the finals for the title after a preliminary judging that narrowed the category from forty-four squads to the top five in the nation. Competition for the title came early the next day, beginning at 7130 a.m. The Vines squad drew the first performance and executed beautifully. At noon the an- nouncements were made, and the Vines sophomore wallsed away with 4th Place in the nation. While ten of these girls were winning honors in Florida, another squad mem- ber was performing thousands of miles away in the Hula Bowl. Renee Loncar was selected during the summer camp of the National Cheerleaders Asso- ciation to perform along with other top cheerleaders. This honor is usually bestowed on graduating seniors, yet Renee was singled out for her abilities her sophomore year. In addi- tion to these honors, the squad swept the NCA summer camp by talsing five superior ribbons, the spirit sticls and the spirit award. The spirit award came from a balloting of all cheer- leaders at the camp and given to the squad those cheer- leaders most admired by all others. Also, the squad was a finalist for the Award of Excel- lence-again usually reserved for senior varsity squads. While bringing home the awards the squad managed to dazzle au- diences during pep rallies and cheer their teams onto victory during games. Members of the sophomore squad were Tiffany Dailey, Tina Drenlsus Chead cheerleaderb, Monique Baird, Kristin Dreyer, Jennie Brooks CmascotD, Denna Roolser, Lana Roberts, Anja Rahe, Renee Loncar, Danna Molsry and Kim Hamic.
