Yearbook QUADS, CROPPERS, CAPTIONS, COPY AND PII earbook is not the blow-off class everyone thinks it to be. On the contrary, there is a lot of hard work that goes into a yearbook, and every member of the yearbook staff must be prepared to meet the responsibilities. Even during the summer, members of the staff are busy 3 meeting to develop a theme for the yearbook. The theme is the entire, cohesive idea on which the book is presented. After the theme is chosen, an outline of the book is written on a ladder which shows what pages are used for what sections in the book. This is then hung on the wall in the earbook office so all are y staff members can check to see what pages are due at each deadline. Each page of the book is designed on a large piece of graph paper that comes in W triplicate and is called a quad . Boxes drawn on these a es re resent ictures D 8 D D R, that will be cropped with a special instrument to fit those spaces. Captions for each picture are written as is body copy tfeature articles? for these pages. Each page is then sleeved with the appropriate information on the front. The layout or quad of the page, the captions, the body copy and pictures are put into the sleeve to be proofed by the editors and finally, Miss Tillery. Deadlines are made at about one month intervals with an assigned amount of pages due to be turned in on that date. When deadlines aren't made, it costs the staff fund and the school extra money. it This year two main editors of the book, Kelly Thompson and Jennifer Sieckel had the job of overseeing the work done by other staff members. Evert with careful checking, mistakes do slip through the check points. However, proofs are sent from the publishing company, Josten's, so that the book is as near-perfect as it can be. Compiling a record of the year's history is an enormous task for anyone, but especially for an untrained group of teenagers. This is one reason that only those students who can handle the responsibility are placed in yearbook. All yearbook staffers know that those students who have purchased a yearbook have invested a lot of money and faith that the yearbook will be something that they can be proud to own. Without a doubt, The Odyssey staff has put together the best yearbook in the history of Vines, and we are most proud to present it to you. 3 2 Editors Jennifer Steckel and Kelly Thomps Casey Hunter explains to Michelle McCul- I rejoice after Ms. Tillery answers a questio lough how to design a class section layout.

THE STAFF: WE ALMCST MADE THE DEADLINES as anyone seen the ii copy book? class section editor Casey Hunter yells into the yearbook office. Yeah, it's in my living room at home. Sorry Casey, apologizes .lan Tillery, the yearbook advisor. Has anyone seen the cropper? Clem Heick, from the sports sec- tion, sticking his head in the door asks. Lisa or Karen has it, Jennifer Steckel, co-editor of the yearbook, tells him. Use the orange one. l'll wait, thanks. Kelly, Jennifer asks Kelly Thompson, other co-editor of the yearbook, do you have page 32? l have it, Ms. Tillery answers. lt's in my living roorn at home. Sorry. Ms Tillery. Juli Cook says com- ing into the office, you said yester- day you had some checks for me to write receipts for. I forgot. They're on my kitchen table. Sorry Juli. Yes, it's another typical day in the ole yearbook room, with faithful workers milling around trying to fin- ish a page here, write a caption there. The same faithful workers who make sure to correctly identify everyone in a photo and make all deadlines on time. Well, maybe this is a little exaggerated, but it is one of those faithful workers writing this now. The year has been long and hard, with each of us doing our best to finish the book so we can go on to bigger and better things! So we may have made one or two mistakes, but remember that no one is per- fect. There's so much work to do and so little time to do it in. We do all the work in this book -the de- signing of the pages, the captions, the pictures, the body copy and each page is completed and edited before it is sent into the plant. Ms. Tillery shouts orders in the background to a hardworking Chris Warner and Lori Hamilton. This year brought a few excitin moments to the members of th 1985-86 Vines High School yea book staff: the fun meetings durin the summer, the workshop we wer forced, er happy to attend for fiv hours during the morning of Augus 20th, finally deciding on a theme fc the yearbook about three week into the school year, watching Mik finally develop a good roll of filrr giving Ms. Tillery the camera watching Ms. Tillery cry when w gave her the camera, yelling AT TENTION K-MART SHOPPERS loudly in the background when Jir was calling his boss, looking fc quads, looking for the one goo cropper, looking for copy sheets Ahh yes, those memories bL seriously though, this year has bee a lot of fun and helping each stt dent remember it better in a year book has made the staff happy. l truly was the best of times.
