WE RE TALKING NUMBER ONE he National Forensic League, or NFL, is an honorary organization which promotes the interests of interscholastic debate, oratory and public speaking, explains Vines speech teacher Debbie Brantley. Attending approximate- ly 15 speech tournaments during the school year, the Vines Speech Team won high honors every time. The first tournament they attended was held at U T A where speech team members Patti Hanaway and Tom Schmidt placed first in CX de- bate. At another tournament held at Shepton High School, they both placed first again in CX debate with Tom Schmidt receiving top speaker honors at both tournaments and Christine Cowin placing first with dramatic interpretation. Goals of the speech team were to learn skills to speak out in various tournament categories and learn how to debate with successful results. In December the Vines Speech Team hosted a Texas Forensic Association Qualifying Speech and Debate Tour- nament where different members received rec- ognition for their many great talents.
