The Beat Still Goes On. . . Many people think that when football season ended. the Viking Band finished for the year. But the band. directed by Mr. Finnell and Mr. Stubbs. worked even harder for many more events. Since the beginning of the year. the band members raised money for a trip to Houston in April. They sold magazine subscrip- tions. coupon books. pecans. and tickets to two performances. With the money raised. they went to Houston and competed in the Astroworld Band Festival. Contests are important in every band member's mind. At march- ing contest. on November 6. the Scott Gaulden keeps the band in Vines Band Offferg ,.,...... Mez...-u 1 Q,-...N ,.. .7 Everyone head for the busses

combined band pluyed and received a lst division ruling. All Region Band Tryouts. held on December l and 8. also proved successful. Eighteen members from Vines and others from around the region placed in the band. and together they put on an excellent performance. Solo and Ensemble is a competition where one person or a group of people Beth Martin and her trumpet make beautiful music The Flag Corps keeps theirflagsfhting high. work up I1 piece of music and play it for Z1 judge. Forty people from Vines received ll lst divi- sion. One of the biggest contests of the year was the UIL Contest. held on March I3. The bands competed in L1 concert division. where each band played three numbers. They then sightreud at new piece of music. Both bands did very well and found out what to improve on for next year. Marching wasn't everything for the Vines Band. They also took part in pep rallies. fund ruisers. contests. and u trip. These events made for 21 pretty tight schedule. but the Vines Band worked very hard und performed to their peak of excellence. Kim Cochran concentrates on her music while keeping instep. Larrv Fox ist1't 100 sure what song the haha' is play ing.
