est destructive force in the history of man' kind — the atomic bomb — has been produced; perhaps most discouraging of all is that these inventions and theories were wrought and developed as the result of two world wars in which thousands of lives were lost for causes which have yet to be achieved and established. These are just a few of the many things which will influence the future with which we arc confronted. It is our responsibility to assemble this scientific data, these inventions and the theories and ideals newly formulated into a con- structivc, not destructive force. A senator from Indiana, Albert J. Beveridge once stated, “God has marked the American people as his chosen nation to finally lead in the regeneration of the world. This is our job!” Using as our “key” the education which we have received and that which some of us shall attain in the future, we shall strive not only to “open the door to the future,” but to create a better world in that future for the classes that enter after us. We have «accumulated many of the facts and records which have contributed to the final mold of our key in the past four years. “We are molding the key that will open the door to the future. With this as our motto we, that class of 1950, leave school to enter as citizens of the world, . . the door to the future . . What docs this mean? What is this future? To receive an impression of what the future brings we must take a brief review of the past. In the last half century the world has experienced greater changes than those ever created in the wildest and most imaginative dreams. The airplane was in- vented in 1905, yet so rapid has been the advancement of science that we were able to read in our papers this year, that man has exceeded 1000 mph. on several occa- sions. This achievement was brought about in less than 50 years. Not only in science has man progressed, for new ideas have been advanced and. applied in indus- try, economics, government, international relations, and innumerable other fields. During the past five decades mass produc- tion has been brought into use making the United States the wealthiest nation in the world. The world has seen and experi- enced for the first time a United States President serving longer than two terms, the establishment and failure of the League of Nations, the prominence of socialism and communism in government; the great-
