“We are molding the key that will open the door to the future. With this as our motto we, that class of 1950, leave school to enter as citizens of the world, . . the door to the future . . What docs this mean? What is this future? To receive an impression of what the future brings we must take a brief review of the past. In the last half century the world has experienced greater changes than those ever created in the wildest and most imaginative dreams. The airplane was in- vented in 1905, yet so rapid has been the advancement of science that we were able to read in our papers this year, that man has exceeded 1000 mph. on several occa- sions. This achievement was brought about in less than 50 years. Not only in science has man progressed, for new ideas have been advanced and. applied in indus- try, economics, government, international relations, and innumerable other fields. During the past five decades mass produc- tion has been brought into use making the United States the wealthiest nation in the world. The world has seen and experi- enced for the first time a United States President serving longer than two terms, the establishment and failure of the League of Nations, the prominence of socialism and communism in government; the great- est destructive force in the history of man' kind — the atomic bomb — has been produced; perhaps most discouraging of all is that these inventions and theories were wrought and developed as the result of two world wars in which thousands of lives were lost for causes which have yet to be achieved and established. These are just a few of the many things which will influence the future with which we arc confronted. It is our responsibility to assemble this scientific data, these inventions and the theories and ideals newly formulated into a con- structivc, not destructive force. A senator from Indiana, Albert J. Beveridge once stated, “God has marked the American people as his chosen nation to finally lead in the regeneration of the world. This is our job!” Using as our “key” the education which we have received and that which some of us shall attain in the future, we shall strive not only to “open the door to the future,” but to create a better world in that future for the classes that enter after us. We have «accumulated many of the facts and records which have contributed to the final mold of our key in the past four years. We present them to you now, in the form of the 1950 Record. til J uture to tli e Mlonor WL ere M, onor is We, the class of 1950, are very proud to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Norman Walsh. In the five years that Mr. Walsh has been with the faculty at Vineland High School, he has, in his quiet yet sincere manner, made many friends and earned the respect of the entire senior class. Up until this year the boys had a virtual monopoly on Mr. Walsh's services. His duties as Physical Education Instructor and Assistant Football Coach, Jayvcc and Freshman Basketball Coach, and Assistant Baseball Coach didn't bring him into contact with many of the senior lassies. This year, however, with the introduction of the driver education course into our curriculum, the girls too have had the opportunity of working with him. Before coming to V. H. S. Mr. Walsh attended Trenton State Teachers College and then spent four years in the United States Army. In his various capacities in our school, Mr. Walsh has always made us feel that he was one of us. His friendly attitude and his willingness to be of help to us at any time have been greatly appreciated. In admiration of the clean-cut character and amiable personality that he displays, we, the Class of 1950, dedicate this book. 5 an d to a 3, me Mr. Donley Mr. Donley, our supervising principal, has been of more help to the senior class in molding the key for the future than many of us imagine. To him are due many of the advances which our entire school system has received in the past few years. With many painstaking efforts, he has seen to it that our school has gone far ahead in every respect. Mr. Donley with his smiling countenance can often be found in the halls of Vineland High School greeting members of the faculty and student body. The senior class has much for which to thank him. In our searchings for the key to open the door to the future, Miss Rossi has always been there to help and counsel us. Without her advice and aid, we would never have been able to advance as far as graduation. Busy as all high school principals are. Miss Rossi always has time to listen to our troubles. When it comes to a helping hand, our principal can always be depended upon to aid us in a construe' tive and impartial manner. The graduates of Vineland High School will never forget her. Miss M. Rossi 6 chninistration — J JhanltA BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education, in most cases, typifies the expression, “the men behind the scenes. Most of the work that they do seems to go unnoticed by the student body of Vineland High School. To them falls the task of seeing that the schools of Vincland-Landis Township are run in a smooth fashion. Without them, there would be no door to open, even if we did find the key. The Board, under the able leadership of Mr. Dane Barsc, has contributed much to the well' being of our school. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude and thanks to them for providing us with a good school system in which to grow and learn. We did not know in which direction to look for this key hut under the leadership of our class officers: President, George Martinelli; Vice-President, Michael Martinelli; Secretary, Esther Lamanna; Treasurer, Margaret Conto, our class has made much progress in searching for the shape of the key. Without the fine leadership and advice of Mr. Norman Krapf, we could not have gained any idea of the meaning and use of the key. The class of 1953 has followed “Nick and Chick” through all his ups and downs. We have given frosh foot- ball stars and managers, a cheerleader plus many other players and rooters. We've sung in assembly, sold maga- zines, and sent CARE packages. We've painted posters and ranked high with our teachers and schoolmates all in the search for the key to open the door to the future. We have done this through meriting high marks, going to every school event with “Nick the Chick and helping him with public speaking contest winners, twirlers, cheerleaders, musicians and many original assemblies. The Sophomores have been a very congenial class, with our dance—reviewing the sophomore homerooms—the highlight of the March social calendar. We certainly enjoyed being upper lower-classmen! The class officers who led us through the year arc Frank Chodnicki, President; Mildred Smith, Vice-President; Shirley Bowers, Secretary and Dolores Bruge, Treasurer. Without Miss Rita Cresci, Class Advisor, we would not have gained any headway in our class projects. Her able assistance and advice in all our undertakings was invaluable. Now, at the end of our first year as upperclassmen, we have dreams of our senior year and graduation. Throughout our first three years we have done a lot of thinking and work- ing. We're ready now to put the polishing touches on our thoughts and work for the future. With “Nick the Chick,” our class has gone on to bigger and better things; the JuniorSenior Prom and the Junior Class Play were big “firsts” and we worked hard to make them successes. We elected the following people to lead us in the molding of the key: President, James Reaves; Vice-Presi- dent, Rudy Rubcrti; Secretary, Alex Loukashenok; Treasurer, Donald Luisi. Our class advisor, Mr. Cosmo Minifri, was the biggest help any class could have asked for. His well-taken advice was a determining factor in our success as a class. MISS BROOKINS FIRST ROW: M. It is the approved guiding organization. The members set a good example for their fellow students in their conduct, achievements, and efforts in all campaigns. The results of the Cleanup and Courtesy Campaigns were remarkably noticeable. The Student Council works in particular for a more friendly and understanding relationship between the students and teachers. Miss Sternberg, their sponsor, gives her untiring support to all of the council activities. One of the many ideas to improve the school which have come from the Student Council is an annual Red and Gray Day which was established to promote school spirit. The officers and several members regularly attend the statc-wide conference at Princeton each November and report to the council and the stu dent body the results of that meeting. Last year Vineland High School was host to the Student Councils of the Cumberland County high schools and to several visitors from other counties. New and interesting ideas are always presented at these county conferences which have proved beneficial not only to our council but also to our school. These activities and others make the Student Council one of the most useful and respected organizations of V. H. S. SENIOR RECORD Helping “Nick” find the right formula for molding the key was the task of the Record Staff, so they went to work by reviewing the past records of the class of “1950”. With the help of our “guid- ing light,” Mr. Kammcr, the details were sorted out and gradually the key began to take shape. Hard work and lots of fun was the recipe followed by the staff members who wrote, counted ballots, raised money, and did innumerable other things to make our yearbook the finest. Mr. Lchocky and Mrs. Markham were hard workers as problems RECORD STAFF FIRST ROW: I. Pcluro; M. Kaiser; I.. Lehman; E. B allow; G. Bardfeld—Editor; E. Crane; E. Chaply; W. Stern; M. Berman: I. Editor Gilbert Bardfeld could always be counted on for a good idea when the way seemed long. So “Nick found the staff a friendly bunch with whom he enjoyed working and when finally the secret of the key was found, “Nick” felt a little regretful because now that the battle was over he knew that the friends that he had made while looking for the formula, now would pass into the album of memories; however, those memories will be among the treasured events of his life. Mrs. Markham, Mr. Kammcr, and Mr. Lchocky helped us worry about finances, write-ups and artistic production. 3irst Yliyhter Yjick Sees St ars Nick the Chick wasn't quite prepared for the earth shaking events of December first and second. On these evenings the Senior play, “Meet Me in St. Louis,” kept two full houses roaring with hilarity and shaking with anxiety for an hour and a half. At eight o'clock Nick was rather astonished to see the cast hopping around, dancing, singing, and talking in high nervous voices instead of biting their nails. Instead of sucking lemons like amateur stars usually do, they went around stealing fudge and candy, much to the dismay of “Gus.” Out front the bulk of the class had their fingers crossed for their friends up on the stage. We're sure they'll never forget such memorable bits as the leg-biting scene, when Tootie crawls around the couch and attacks poor Mr. Dodge, nor will their memories fail to retain a picture of Mr. Dodge, and Mr. Duffy sputtering and stammering, water drip- ping from their hats and coats. They'll remem- her when Rose slapped John so hard that he almost fell over, they'll remember when Esther solemnly swallowed a chicken heart and vowed to marry the next man to shake hands with her. And who would dare to forget Agnes, tripping down the steps singing a song of unknown origin? Never will the seniors be able to fully express their graditude to Mr. Arnade who directed the production, to Mr. Leeds and to Mr. Nasser who worked so hard on the set. The cast also appreciated the loyal service of Ronnie Barbetti, Gus Dczutti, and BobTobolski. This was a big thing in the lives of our Seniors. In the words of Mr. Smith, “This is the best. Just as “Nick the Chick” searched four years for his key to the future, Hi-Spots is forever seek- ng the key to sincerity, truthfulness, accuracy and impartiality. This organization is made up of conscientious students who are willing to give up their free time in order to work for the school paper. Each month Hi'Spots is edited by four different page editors who pick the reporters they want to write for their page that month. Found in the paper is a complete coverage of past, present, and future news, which includes dances, parties, sport events, humorous features, and flattering pictures of the students themselves. So if you happen to sec the students busily engaged in reading, you may be sure that the Vineland Hi .Spots has just been passed out. 62 SEATED: Mr. Ccrnigliaro—Adv.; A. Flk. n—Pros.. STANDING: F. Under Mr. Antonio Cernigliaro's sponsor- ship, this club holds an annual public speaking contest. Eight persons participate with humorous and dramatic selections. The three prize-winning contestants re ceive medals and the fourth receives a certificate of honorable mention. There is much anxiety the night of the contest, both in the audience and among the parti- cipants, as to which selections will merit awards. Even if one doesn't win, the ex- perience and training that he gets serves as an important reason for his joining this group. The attraction incentive must be there, for this is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in the school. FIRST ROW: M. Koitz—Pres.; Mrs. B. Wcvl- man — Adv.; S. Shatz — Vice-Prcs. Thalia allows girls to try out for the contest, picking the ten best. There are eight contestants and two alter- nates. The girls must memorize their entire selections, and they must be able to per- form well. The impartial judges pick the three best orators for prizes and a fourth for an honorable mention certificate. The awards arc medals that are donated by Mr. John Lehocky. HONOR PATROL AND TRAFFIC SQUAD Two of the most responsible organi- zations in Vineland High School that receive little recognition are the Honor Patrol and the Traffic Squad. Mrs. Mae Maruffi is the efficient advisor. Besides keeping the halls clear and the traffic moving smoothly, the Honor Patrol spon- sors one of the biggest dances of the year, the Valentine Semi-Formal. During football season, you sec quite a bit of the Band and Drum and Bugle Corps march- ing down the football field in their smart uniforms. Every Tuesday in assembly you can hear the Orchestra playing while the students enter. On special occasions you will hear the lyrical voices of the Treble Clef Club in assemblies or perhaps the Dance Band which plays for many of our social affairs. Every Spring the Orchestra and Treble Clef Club give a combined concert. The band gives a perfor- mance of its own. All of these organizations belong to the Music Club which composites the group. If they need financial aid or help in any other way, the Music Club always comes to the rescue. With all of these well-trained groups, led by the Music Club, everyone has a chance to lend his talents to the group which interests him most. It is also a valuable aid to persons who arc interested in the art of make-up or in staging, directing, and sound effects, as well as the actual acting in a play. This year the Dramatic Club celebrates its twenty-fifth year at Vineland High School. The Dancing Club is among the newer activities at V. H. S. but it is also one of the more useful. Have you ever wondered how you could learn some of those new steps that you see other people using? Did you ever envy those people in the pictures that you see of square dancing? Anyone attending just a few of the Dancing Club meetings would be envied by others too. DRAMATIC CLUB FIRST ROW: E. Bardfeld; M. Hertz- nun; G. Rawlins; J. Potter; B. Camp- bell; I. FRENCH CLUB LeCercle Fran ais, under the direction of Miss Mildred Durand, is the oldest and most active of the language clubs in Vineland High School. To elude the classroom atmosphere, meetings are held in the evening at individual homes once a month. The entire meeting is conducted in French with various sketches, games, and songs following. This year an interesting experiment to improve the student's conversational ability was held. Three groups, meeting after school once a month with third year students presiding, were formed to encourage better student participation. ITALIAN CLUB Peering into the cafeteria on Friday at 3:30, Nick finds the bi-weekly meeting of the Italian Club, with their advisor, Miss Gilda Mendico, being called to order. A very enjoyable Christmas Party was held with favors and novel Italian sketches featuring the entertain- ment. Their usual St. Patrick's dance leaves this phrase cir- culating throughout school, “Oh, what a wonderful time we had at that dance!” Encouraging better grades, the advisor makes annual awards to outstanding students of Italian. Movies, discussions, and hikes arc part of the club's program. There is never a dull moment in the Biology Club, since all arc interested in what is continually happening about us in nature. PHYSICS CLUB The Physics Club has Mr. Krapf to thank for the interesting program that is carried on throughout the year. Numerous and fascinating are the experiments that are presented when the club convenes once a month. Here arc discussed rocket engines, atomic energy, and other scienti- fic advancements based on physics. To conclude its program the club visits the Franklin Institute where everyone can see the latest scientific developments and their origins through physics. Sci ence BIOLOGY CLUB FIRST ROW: J. A long felt need at Vineland High School, the Boys' Glee Club made its initial appearance at the time of the Christmas assembly. Not only could they be heard harmonizing with the “trcblcrs during fourth period practice, but the general public had occasion to hear them perform at the annual Spring Concert. BOWLING CLUB It's a strike!—the dream of every member of the Bowling Club . . . Meeting every Monday along with their advisor. Miss Scrivani, the club members try to make their dreams come true. Their highest scorer has done just that—from dropping the bowling ball on her foot when she first learned to play the game to making scores like 197. It's a lot of fun getting together at the Recreation Center after school and dividing into teams of six, that play against each other. 76 and A Jdid oCi u n cj A w i th Sclioo iSP irit CHEERLEADERS “It isn't any difficult task to cheer loud and strong when being led by such a peppy group of enthusiastic gals and guys!” declared Nick. No matter what the time or weather and regardless of the score, the cheerleaders seem to be indefatigable. Led by vivacious “Pinky Vai, the cheerleaders are an important link in the pro- motion of the school spirit which is prevalent among the students at Vineland High. Beginning their cheerlcading duties early in September they acquire a busy schedule including football, boys' and girls' basket- ball games, assemblies, and pep rallies. Filling this schedule is a year-round job which is always capably carried out. 77 .3ut ure hct orf CLASS HISTORY—JUNIOR YEAR 1949 was a banner year, for at last Nick was an upper- classman. His activities were numerous and varied; their influence was beginning to be felt by V. H. S. The call for try-outs for the junior class play, “Babies’ Night Out,” was answered by Wayne Charlson, Betty Cook, Lorraine Pagnam, Ethel Crane, Carol John- stone, Tommy Raphael, Marian Clark, Richard Moyer and others. Mardi Gras was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom held in the gym, magically transformed into a gay panorama of striking colors. Nick was thrilled to see the first members of his class—Margie Barish, David Rosenberg, Gilbert Bardfeld, Shirley Remsen, Gloria Schiavo, Catherine Eaton, Charlotte Shadis, Lillian Lister, Emilia Chaply, Pauline Panichello and Mildred Steinmetz—inducted in{o the National Honor Society. President Bob Brodzik conducted class meetings this year. While he was ordering class rings, selling mints, magazines, peanut brittle, and play tickets and decorating the gym, Nick was anxiously looking forward to his senior year, which a few short years ago seemed so far away. JootUl 0, eamivor L eerS The most common fault found with records is that they don’t tell the whole story. This was undoubtedly true this year. Our boys found themselves on the winning side of the ledger but once, yet this does not indicate the fighting spirit or will to win that was shown in every game. The real “heartbreaker” of the season was the Bridgeton game. Vineland took an early lead and held it until the waning seconds of the game, when Bridgeton, who had been outfought all day, connected with a pass to give them the winning touchdown. Had Vineland won this game there most likely would have been a different story to tell at the end of the season. Vineland experienced another loss midway in the season during the Atlantic City game. Then Bob Brodzik, Co'Captain this year along with Bob Tobolski, received a broken collar bone which put him out of action for the remaining games. Bob Tobolski, recipient of the Times Journal award this year played a hard game for a full 60 minutes. One never failed to see his smudged jersey, with number 25 on it, coming out from the bottom of every play. This year also marked the debut of Coach Tony DiTomo, assistant to Coach Danny Testa. Mr. DiTomo will take over as head coach next year, and will inherit a large group of seasoned material. The class of 1950 takes this opportunity of wishing Coach DiTomo the best of luck. 80 Mr. Minifri; Mr. Furlong; Mr. Walsh; Mr. Tesla; and Mr. DiTomo. Vineland High School has the honor of having both the city and Cumberland County championships in basketball this year. It isn't very often that Coach Cosh has a team that displays so much willingness, and talent at the same time. Headed by Co-Captains Mat” Moratti and Dave” Rosenberg, the varsity quintet played the hard and fast brand of basketball that once again was reminiscent- of the championship days of 1945 and Vineland's only Group IV title. The senior class can very well be proud of their classmates who played this year. Gil Bardfeld was a steady hard working forward throughout the season. Irv “the Katz” could always be counted on for a good performance and brought many ooh's and ah's from the crowd with his long set shots. Bcrnic Caplan was a deceptive ball handler until he was forced out of action in mid-season with a broken hand. Pete Gentile showed the scrapincss which made the team a‘ hard one to beat. Matt Moratti was the steady high scoring forward whose brilliant • play at all times was an inspiration to his teammates, while Dave Rosen- berg played a good backboard game and hit double figures consistently until his injury late in the season. Next year's team shows much promise of having another fine season. They’ll be missed next year—we hope. BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: B. Caplan; M. Moratti; P. Gentile. SECOND ROW: I. Katz; D. Rosenberg; G. Those seniors who will be missed by next year's team are Joao Conccllo, Bernice Forgnoni, Laura Vai, Aline Martini, France LaTorrc and Gwendolyn Harris. on for a good bout KNKEI.ING: D. Warren: L. Sill; L. Browne; F. Chodnicki. SECOND ROW: D. Slomin; C. Rass- muvsen; J. Pepper; D. Rosen- berg; B. Joseph; R. Young; R. Smith; R. Brodzik; A. Corrado; J. Reaves; Coach Cosh. record; however, the addition of several new members to the squad boosted it and the team compiled a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. One of the bitterest defeats was the loss of the Cumberland County title to Bridgeton by three points. Seniors who displayed good form and who should become the nucleus of a fine team this year are David Rosenberg in the shot put event, Barry Joseph discus thrower, pole vaultcr Dclmo Filippi, 880 yardsman Francis Donato, 100 yard dashman Joe Permuy, 440 yard runner Jack Pepper, and milers John Gruccio, Chris Rassmussen, and Don Slomin. CROSS COUNTRY The most unpublieized sport at Vineland High School is, undoubtedly. Cross Country running. The boys of this team put in many hours of. hard work in mid-winter, sometimes running 'as many as six miles a night. The four seniors who should be given much credit for their efforts in spite of very little recogni- tion arc Francis Donato, James Halfcrty, Don Slomin, and John Gruccio. LEFT TO RIGHT: F. Chodnicki: F. Donato; J. Tobolsk i; B. Smith; H. W. J. Halfcrty; D. Slomin; J. Gruccio; D. Kornbluh; C. Cosh, Coach. BASEBALL As the 1950 Record goes to press, baseball season is still a few weeks away. Coach Ncllo Dallalio is anticipating an average season. Last year's graduation losses will be felt very keenly by the squad with many positions open to new candidates. Senior pitchers, Eddie Bonon cini and Gordon Robbins should prove very effective against enemy batsmen, as should first baseman Mario Moratti and outfielder Herman Davis, against the moundsmen of the opposition. In spite of the lack of experience on the team, we can be sure that when baseball season comes into full swing, Vineland High will be represented by a determined group of players. h Winds Vp with BaSehad BASEBALL FIRST ROW: D. D’Arrigo TENNIS Coach Norm Krapf hopes to have another banner season on the tennis courts this year. Pictured here is the nuc leus around which he plans to build an- other successful team. Last year, for its first season, his team boasted an excellent record—six wins and four losses. Though a comparatively new sport, tennis has come along fast as is proven by the ability of returning letterman Phil D'Arrigo and Mike Dougherty. Seniors who promise to bolster this year's team arc Gil Bardfeld, Steve Kaplan and Al Goldberg. J4 ar py 3 ime5 CLASS HISTORY—SENIOR YEAR Well, at last the day of days arrived. Nick, his tail feathers up in a show of pride, walked through the halls as if he owned them,—but there was much work and responsibility. Bob Brodzrk was chosen to lead the class in the final year. Nick took part in the senior play, sold Christmas cards, sweets, and magazines. He in- creased his finances for the senior trip. Nick, true blue to V.H.S., braved the cold winds and flying peanut shells of Gittone Field to cheer his football team, headed by Bob Tobolski and Bob Brodzik. He found time to get half decent marks and to indulge in social activities. Basketball games, Record sessions with Mr. Kammer, wrestling, public speaking, and getting a date for the semi-formal were just a few of the things Nick was confounded with. With spring came the prom, the class trip, and then the graduation. Nick, after receiving his diploma, felt a note of regret under his now fully grown feathers; he was no longer “Nick the Chick”, but—NICHOLAS THE CHICKEN. Bcrnicc Forgnoni and Bob David Rosenberg and Mar- Shirley Sandelier and Joe Jo Anne Pcluro and John Brodzik arc popular. jorie Barish will succeed. Serra are good looking. Baker are typical seniors. Charlotte Shadis and Mario Moratti have outstanding personalities. Frances LaTorre and Bernic Caplan dress well. Joan Concello and Bob To- bolski play the game well. Wayne Charlson and Bernice Burn certainly can emote. Kathleen Polizzi and Gilbert Bardfcld arc congenial. Eddie Bononcini and Gwen Harris enjoy dancing. Nick Schicunoff and Ethel Crane arc very cute. Carmen Galzarano and Bea- trice McHenry are music- makers. Bob Tobolski and Lorraine Pagnam are a cute couple. Pete Gentile and Bernice Burn are so original. Michael Verra didn't grow so tall as Shirley Rcmscn. Kathleen Polizzi looks up to Barry Joseph. 91 l ememberA Wk en Bridgeton High School changed from Red and White to Red and Gray . . .
