Presented by The Senior Class Vineland High School Vineland, New Jersey FRED LUERTZING ......Editor MR. M. H. KAMMER....Adviser Though the boys of Millville High School Love the orange and the blue; And the sturdy sons of Bridgeton To the red and white are true; We will cheer for dear old Vineland. The school we'll love for aye. For all her sons are loyal To her colors. Red and Gray. Oh. the four brief years of high school. On the fleeting wings of time. Bear us on tojield of vision. Where we scale new heights sublime; Mid our pleasures, cares and sorrows As we toil from day to day. Let us cheer for Vineland High School And her colors. Red and Gray. otYou °'eOVe,■ te a cat® e bequ°: This year, 1949, marks the one hun- dredth anniversary of the pioneers of 1849 who left their homes and old ties to seek new fortunes. They left their homes with the idea of attaining higher goals, material or spiritual betterment, and above all greater wealth. A great future also lies ahead for us, and the time is nearing when we must set out on strange paths. Before striving for material wealth we should first ob- tain wealth of knowledge and a wealth of understanding. This will help to de- velop better citizens and a better world to live in. Today, how fortunate we are to have had one hundred years more time to profit from the world's experi- ences -to readjust the values that are placed on life's goals. We have set our goals very high—this in itself develops a challenging spirit—to strive toward the unattainable. Browning said, a man's reach should exceed his grasp, else what's a heaven for. To the undaunted spirit of the '49ers of one hundred years ago, who per- severed through many hardships and overcame many discouraging obstacles, we direct our theme. The following presentations are the outstanding events and highlights of our senior year. 3 DEDICATE THIS EDITION TO MR. MILTON H. RAMMER Mr. Kammer came to Vineland High School from Pennsyl- vania in 1947, and since then has become one of the favorite teachers here. Mr. Kammer teaches in the English Department and is a senior proctor this year. Above all he is the advisor of the Senior Record Staff and without his help this publication would not have been possible. To show our appreciation for your splendid help and coop- eration, we dedicate the '49ers Record to you. MR. A. DONLEY SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL Whenever any problems arise involving the whole school. Mr. Donley is the man to see in order to solve them. Since many prob- lems do arise. Mr. Donley is a busy man. He is never too busy, how- ever. to devote some of his valu- able time to worthwhile causes. Besides being hard-working, Mr. Donley is friendly and helpful; he is always seen with a pleasant ex- pression on his face. V. H. S. stu- dents will always remember him for all that he has done for them. MISS M. ROSSI PRINCIPAL Always busy, but never with- out time for anyone , would aptly describe this person who has the busiest job in V. H. S. Besides being Principal, supervising the school activities, acting as a Guid- ance Counsellor, and participating in community organizations. Miss Rossi always finds time to devote to the individual students and their particular problems. Fairness, capability, and humor could all be considered characteristics of a well-rounded personality. Miss Rossi, possessing all these and more, should, therefore, be con- sidered an outstanding person- ality—one that no student at V.H.S. can ever forget. 6 BOARD OF EDUCATION Always talked about but seldom seen, this group of men and women has the mountainous task of running all the Vineland- Landis Township schools. Under the leadership of Mr. Dane Barse, President, they have brought Vineland and Landis Town- ship further along the road to better schools and better educa- tion. We are indeed grateful to them for all they have done for us. Soatod (left to right): C. Calvin Rone. Mrs. William H. Brooks. Dane Barse (president). Mrs. Thelma Taylor. Dr. Anthony S. Magolda. It was an evening of relaxation for the hard working travelers as they gradually forgot the hard trail ahead and gave their full attention to the performers on the stage. Promptly at 8:15 Judy and Mitzi step from behind the curtains for the prologue. Then the moment of tension disappears and the curtains swish open. The theme centers around Judy Foster, a teen-age miss, who is trying to raise more money than her rival. Tootsie Wightman, so that she can be crowned queen at her club's dance. When her father refuses to support her, she and a pal. Barbara Winsocket. enter a num- ber of contests which eventually involve the entire family. Oogie Pringle. Judy's boy friend, waits pa- tiently for Judy's acceptance of the dance invi- tation and even writes a song in honor of the occasion; but she is far too busy to worry about Oogie and avoids giving a definite answer. Still determined to earn enough money. Judy writes a True Confession Story and attempts to impress a Broadway producer with her acting; but. despite these efforts, Tootsie is still ahead on the day of the dance. Our heroine is feeling dejected at this time not only because she will not be queen but be- cause Oogie has asked Tootsie to the dance. Her troubles are ended, however, when she dis- covers that Oogie only pretended to ask Tootsie and that the latter has developed a case of hives; therefore Judy is queen. The production would not have been success- ful without the aid of Script Girl Charlotte Heller, and Stage Managers Ace MacDonald and Fred DRAMATIC CLUBJ Pegasus, the Boys' Public Speaking Club, is a group which can be enjoyed by everyone. The reason for this is the contest put on by the members every year. Eight boys compete for prizes; and their selections, both serious and humorous, provide a full evening of entertain- ment for the entire audience. Seated: J. Serro, D. Roscnbcrq, Mr. Ccrnigliaro, S. The Music Club includes the Treble Clef Club, the Drum and Bugle Corps, the Band, the Or- chestra, and the Dance Band. These organiza- tions are under the supervision of Miss Cum- mings. Miss Stern, and Mr. Astor. The Treble Clef Club, made up mostly of girls, presents an annual concert, assembly pro- grams. and sings at Baccalaureate Services. The Drum and Bugle Corps and the Band have added thrilling color to the football games as they marched up and down the field in their bright red and gray uniforms. In many games. the football songs and cheers have helped our team to come from behind and win. These two groups have also represented the high school in local parades. The high stepping twirlers also contributed to the colorful scene of the football games. The V. H. S. Dance Band shall always be remembered for the excellent music they pre- sented at the school dances. They sound as good as many professional organizations, yet they contribute their services free of charge and have made many of the dances complete successes. n Firsl row (left to right): M. Wightman. STUDENT COUNCIL Representing every walk of life, the campfire groups of the wagon trains provided for the '49ers a sort of get-together meeting time. Here ideas were passed and exchanged on matters which often determined the success or failure of the wagon trains to reach their destination— the land of good fortune. Corresponding to the campfire council meet- ings of the '49ers is the Student Council. Here members representing every class, club, and homeroom, join together to create, maintain, and improve good citizenship, school spirit, and scholarship. The exchange of ideas at the campfire get- together led to better thinking, better planning, and better results on the part of the '49ers. The same thing is true with the Student Council. A better student government is created by such an exchange of ideas in the council. OFFICERS Left to right: C. Doerr. Bulletin Chair- man; B. Down. Vice-Presidont; Miss R. Sternberg. Advisor; F. THE SCIENCE CLUBS --- - ----------- Roaming the country on their way to discover gold, the '49ers had many an opportunity to observe wild life and the wonders of nature. They were always searching for something new. Members of the Physics, Biology and Chemistry Clubs are also searching for new facts, whether they pertain to wild life and nature, or to the structure of the atoms and the molecules. The fields of discovery have changed since the gold rush, but there is still a bond between the past and the present—there is always something to discover if there is the desire to find. Seated: J. That was the shout from door to door, from window to window, and from corner to corner. The rush of the '49ers began. Slow moving covered wagons rolled across the hills, dales, and prairies to the promised land of California. Still slower than the wagon trains was the arrival of news. When news did come, it was not always dependable because it spread by word of mouth. Urgent news would some- times arrive too late. How fortunate we are! We receive first hand, accurate, impartial news right from Hi-Spots. This staff of conscientious workers strives to give us their best for our reading enjoyment. But then there were times when, because of the pioneer spirit which made them persist in every under- taking, their efforts were re- warded. Gold was found! So we today, the '49ers of the twentieth century, dig for informa- tion for our book of memories , panning out the incorrect facts and keeping the genuine ones so they may be preserved in our '49ers Record. The story of the great gold rush” has been preserved in all the history books just as the story of the class of '49 is preserved by the efforts of the Senior Record Staff. BASEBALL The 1948 track team was not what could be called a very successful team, but they did com- pile a good record, beating Pitman and Palmy- ra. Joe Panichello came through to win the discus event in the state meet and Stanley Chodnicki, also in the state meet, came in in third place in the mile race. The team was filled with graduates-to-be and so this year's team will be composed mostly of new men. However, prospects for this year are not too bleak because a whole new crop of good underclassmen are joining the team. The cross country team also was not the most successful team V. H. S. has had. The boys were inexperienced, but since they are all un- derclassmen, there are hopes that the future V. H. S. cross country teams will compile more impressive records. Last year's baseball team did not have the ex- perience necessary to become a championship team, but they did play and show the spirit that is typical of V. H. S. teams. Seniors on the team are Peter Micheletti, Victor Chalow, Dave Alvino, Fred Carbone, Robert Albrecht, Dave Martinelli, Anthony Nap- oli and Louis Polizzi. The team was under the capable direction of Coach Nello Dallalio and Assistant Coach Nor- man Walsh. 95 FEATURES Typical Seniors Ace McDonald. Barbara Down Best D PoUwi CaP an 99est Flirts 0,namus. This was the year in which the 49'ers embarked on the first lap of their jounrney that was to take four years to complete. Under the capable leadership of our chief. Anthony Napoli, we made our way that year. Along the trail we found relaxation and entertainment when the Senior Class of 1946 presented the delightful play Smilin' Through. That year proved to be full of activities for many of us. A new experience was ours when the first week of May rolled around and exams were everyone's worry. Everyone was happy, however, when the school year finally came to a close. When the second lap of our itinerary began, we chose as our new chief, Americo Antonelli. Prospects were brighter this year, for we now had become accustomed to our new settlement, Vineland High School. One of the outstand- ing activities that year was the new corps of twirlers, which had been organ- ized while we were still freshmen. Many of our own girls were represented in the corps, and everyone felt proud to see them marching at the football games. Dumb Dollivar was the comedy presentation of the Senior Class of 1947. We still chuckle when we recall some of the play's hilarious situations. In September, 1947, as we started once more along the trail after three months' rest, we gained new courage; for we all were upper classmen now and reveled in that feeling of superiority. This year our leader again was Americo Antonelli. New prospects were in sight and opportunities lay in wait for us. This was the year that one of our own girls was chosen Valentine queen LOOK BACK at the annual St. Valentine Dance. She was. of course, Joan DeMaio. We'll always remember the comedy that Room 101. alias the Squirrel Cage, put on in the assembly, The Marriage of Aggie Culture and Homer Economics. Another outstanding event was the first induction of members into the newly organized Vineland Chapter of the National Honor Society, in which we were represented by ten of our fellow classmates. As that year finally came to a close, our fourth and final lap of the long journey lay not far off in the future. We finally made it! Yes, this was it! We were Seniors at last. How proud we felt to be the first ones to march out of the auditorium every time there was an assembly. What a magic word Senior is! We practically ran the school, and did we love it! Our class leader was, for the third consecutive time, Amer- ico Antonelli; and Frank DeMaio was president of the Student Council. Many of our own classmates were leaders of the various clubs. The first big event was the Senior play, A Date With Judy,” which proved to be a successful hit with everyone. Following that, the National Honor Society held its second induction, in which nine Seniors became new members. Then came the Valen- tine Dance, when for the second time one of the girls in our class was chosen queen—Barbara Down. In the meantime, the term paper took up most of the Seniors' time, and the Prom, the Washington Trip, and finally Graduation were fast approaching. When this was over, a new future lay in store for us—many of us would become scattered, either going off to college or to some other institution of higher learning, or else entering the field of business. No matter what our destinations may be, may we all remember that we were the modern 49'ers who blazed the trail to a promising future, to a new and better world in which we, the pioneers, were to stake our claims.
