For all her sons are loyal To her colors, Red and Gray. Oh, the four brief years of high school On the fleeting wings of time Bear us on to fields of vision. Where we scale new heights sublime; 'Mid our pleasures, cares and sorrows As we toil from day to day, Let us cheer for Vineland High School And her colors, Red and Gray. When the dreams of youth are over, And our race is almost run; When from life all care we’ve banished, Finished what we've here begun; May our fondest memories wander To the place we love always. That is dear old Vineland High School With her colors, Red and Gray. 1 Foreword 1948 produced many startling and many talked of events. In this election year everyone wondered who was going to win the Republican presidential nomination. Would it be Dewey, Taft, Stassen, or Warren; would Eisenhower be drafted; or would it be some dark horse who'd gain this most talked of position of the year? And what about the other parties? Would there be a split between the northern and southern Democrats? How much threat would there be from Wallace and his third party? What about Aid to Europe? Would the U. N. succeed despite the veto problem? How about the rumors of a war with Russia? And would prices ever go down? Also, in this leap year, the women came out with a radical change in fashions. The ' New Look with its lower hemlines stole the spotlight and seemed to be the height of conversation. Whether we preferred a shapely calf or just a well turned ankle, we all seemed to agree that the style was here to stay and after all it wasn’t too bad. But, most important, 1948 was a graduation year—the year that we seniors gradu- ated from Vineland High School. In the following we present the highlights of that year as they happened in our school. L: No one person has done quite so much for our Senior class as Miss Rita Cresci. Serving as our junior and senior class advisor Miss Cresci has been the inspiration to making our last two years in Vineland High School such a success. She has directed throughout these years the two greeting card campaigns. She has been the co-ordinator for the committees of the junior and senior class plays. She was head advisor on our trip to Washington and director of our never-to-be- forgotten commencement. Miss Cresci is no stranger to our town. She was born right here in Vineland and attended Sacred Heart School for 12 years. After graduating from Sacred Heart she attended Chestnut Hill College for 4 years where she received her bachelor’s degree. Soon afrer, she came to Vineland High School and has been teaching in the English Department ever since. There is no way great enough to show our appreciation to Miss Cresci for her splendid work. So.in a small way we have dedicated this, the 1948 Record, to Miss Rita Cresci, our Senior Class advisor. We Dedicate This Book 5 Supervising Principal MR. A. DONLEY One of the finest supervising principals Vineland has ever had. Mr. Donley is well liked by every- one. The great advances he has made in the school system are a shining example of his wonderful spirit. We greatly appreciate all he has done for Vineland High Principal MISS M. ROSSI Few schools can boast of such a fine principal as Miss Rossi. Her wonderful cooperation with every- one has brought her the respect of every student in the school. She is always ready to listen to our troubles and to help us. Miss R. Sternberg. Mr. J. Penino, Miss M. Du- rand, Miss M. Rossi, Mr. A. Cernigliaro, Miss M. Fiamingo. What person trying to get into college hasn't been thankful for the guidance department? Their help in choosing schools, writing applications, and taking entrance exams is a marvelous aid. But, not only doing work for college prep people, the department took charge of Career Night: this project, the first of its kind in V. H. S., provided speakers on the various vocational fields. Vineland High can well be proud of this service. Dean of Boys Office Staff MRS. M. DOERR Did you get in trouble today? You better go see Mr. Pennino. From this dialogue, one might gather that the name of Mr. Pen- nino, better known as J. P., would be a dreaded word. Quite the contrary! More than just a Dean of Boys, he is one of their best friends. t ♦ ♦ Vineland High School Faculty ANNIE S. ACCARDO, B.S. Home Economics Department Home Economics Club Adviser FLORENCE M. ADAMO, M.S. Remember back when Our Hearts Were Young And Gay?” Yes, when our senior class presented the hilarious three act production of Our Hearts Were Young And Gay”, by Cornelia Otis Skinner, and Emily Kimbrough. The play took place during the 1920's and was staged on board ship and in Paris, with Cornelia Skinner, and Emily Kimbrough, two college girls, traveling to France alone against their parent’s wishes. Throughout the play the two girls encountered many exciting times, such as the time Emily threw the deck chair overboard, and hit the stowaway, and the incident just before leaving ship when Cornelia caught the measels, but with the help of Dick Win- ters, Leo McEvoy, two medical students on board, and Emily, they managed to get by the health inspec- tor. Then there was the time in Paris when they were staying at the Sans Sulipicc, and found bed bugs in their bedroom. Cornelia’s main reason for going to Paris was to take acting lessons from Monsieur dc La Croix, but his main object in giving her lessons was to secure her father’s help in getting him to America which didn’t work out. All ended happily in Paris with Emily, Cornelia, Dick, Leo, and Mr. and Mrs. Skin- ner returning to America. SENIOR PLAY USHERETTES Seated: J. Donley. K. Galli. J. Oliva. C. Bertino, J. Wightman, M. Dramatic Club The members of the Cap and Dagger Dramatic Club arc always busy as beavers planning interesting programs for their meetings, held on the first and third Mondays of every month after school, or rehearsing one of their various produc- tions. For the annual assembly program, a one act comedy entitled Love In Bloom” was successfully presented. This delightful comedy concerned a teen-ager’s crush on her dramatics coach and was greatly enjoyed by the student body. But the highlight of the year was the presentation of Act Your Age” in conjunction with the Junior Class. This hilarious three act comedy revolved around the story of two sailors' corrcspondancc with two teen-age girls. All goes well until the two sailors decide to visit the girls while their parents are on vacation. The girls trying to act three or four years older, their glamorous aunt disguised as an eleven year old brat, their wrestling maid, and the sailors’ efforts to escape the wrath of their commanding officer all added up to a well received production. Pegasus Pegasus, better known as the Boys’ Public Speaking Club, is one of the oldest clubs in the history of the school, being in operation for the last 32 years. Each year the club sponsors a Public Speaking Contest in which eight boys participate. Prizes arc awarded to the first three and a certificate of honorable mention to the fourth. Mr. Antonio Cernigliaro has been sponsor of Pegasus for the past years and gets much pleasure from coaching the boys. Seated: N. Alterman, J. Serra—President, A. Cernigliaro—Ad- visor. J. Thalia Better known as the Girls' Public Speaking Contest, this year's group was one of the most outstanding. Under the expert direction of Mrs. Weylman, the speaking contest produced some excellent selections. It was very hard to tell which girl was best, but in the end Shirley Koitz walked off with top honors with her extremely humorous selection, Saturday’s Child. First prize winner of the previous year, Nina Ruth Gillette, won second prize. Clara Shmukler took third honors, and Agnes Grant received honor- able mention. Stated: C. Shmukler; N. R. ORCHESTRA Every Tuesday the Vineland High School Orchestra is alaways set to play for the assembly. As soon as the bell rings they start playing a snappy march while the student body files into the auditorium. During the opening exercises they accompany the sudents in the singing of the National Anthem. This is not the only duty of the orchestra. They are usually on hand at all the school affairs—plays, the public speaking contests, and various conventions held in the school—to provide excellent entertainment. Under the new direction, this year, of Mr. Astor they have increased in size and improved greatly. The orchestra practices every day, second period, in the annex. L«ft to right: R. Scache. Well, that is the purpose of the Dancing Club, to instruct students in the fundamentals of dancing. This club meets every Thursday night after school in the gymnasium under the direction of Mrs. Ferrarie. Throughout the year the Dancing Club traveled to Philadelphia to see the Ballet Russe, and to the Oasis Dancing Hall in Mullica Hill where they participated in the Virginia Reel, Paul Jones, and various other folk dances. During the year Miss Adamo, VHS Spanish teacher, spoke to the club about the many Latin-American dances. F hc,u; jf I 'rrt tein This year showed the greatest improvement in the music system at Vineland High School. Through the efforts of Mr. Astor, the new supervisor of music, the new dance band was formed. Their first appearance in the assembly had the entire student body roaring with applause, and after their first engagement at the seniors' Halloween Dance they were a sure hit and the talk of the school. The band has two vocal- ists, Eileen Casassa, a very talented junior, and Julia Mullen, an equally gifted freshman. The band has chosen for its theme song Stella by Starlight,” a very dreamy and sentimental song and one of the hits of the year. Later in the year they provided music for the Music Club's Christmas Dance, the Honor Patrol’s Valentine Dance, the Student Council’s Sports Dance, and the Italian Club's St. Patrick Dance. For the first year this organization has become one of the most popular groups in the school. Treble Clef Club Music resembles poetry; in each Arc namclss graces which no method teach, And which a master hand alone may reach.” Alexander Pope Everyday during fourth period soft melodic strains are heard coming from the auditorium as eighty girls, dressed in black and white vestments, are heard blending their angelic voices. Formerly meeting only one afternoon a week as the Choral Club, the girls now hold a regular class every day under their new name. Treble Clef Club. Fir t row: M. Petrini; R. DiGregorio; M. At the morning assembly the group led in the singing of well known carols and sang some of the not too familiar songs in impressive choral arrangements. During the day they strolled through the halls entertaining various classes singing all the popular Yuletide songs. During the year they sang at the Women's Club, took part in the Spring Music Festival, and sang at the seniors' baccalaureate service. Patterson; B. Hudson; M. Mazolla; G. Turney; S. Stopa; C. Honor Patrol 8t Traffic Squad The efficiency rating of the Honor Patrol and Traffic Squad is very high. They do their best to keep order in the halls of Vineland High School. The Traffic Squad sees that traffic between classes flows smoothly. It is the duty of the Honor Patrol members to see that no one without a pass is in the hall during classes. Thanks to these two clubs, the congestion in the halls has subsided considerably. By far, the most important activity sponsored by these clubs was the annual Valentine Semi-Formal on February 13. The decorations surpassed all expectations. Dreamy music was provided by the Dance Band and a Valentine Queen was chosen. This affair gains in popularity every year and 1948 was no exception. This organization meets every Thursday morning, during activity period, in the library, and is composed of a represen- tative from every homeroom and the presidents of all clubs throughout the school. The homeroom representatives relate to their fellow students the activities of the Student Council-and bring back to the organization the students' ideas for discussion at the weekly meetings. This year the Annual State Student Council Convention took place in Princeton, where our members procured more new ideas to better the Student Council of V. H. S. Delegates were also sent to other smaller conferences throughout the year such as those that took place in Camden and at Hopewell. First row. left to right: J. OeMaio; M. L. Martin; R. The club is comprised of the school's biology students. They meet every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month and boasts of a membership of thirty-five. One of the year's highlights was the bald eagle found by Mr. Matlack, the club advisor. The eagle was kept in the school for a few weeks and finally was released. The last meeting of the year the group traveled to Parvins State Park for a picnic. They studied the plants and trees found here, also the native birds. First Row: D. Kashubski, L. Lehmann, E. Don't you believe me? Well, have you ever made paint, or sulfuric acid, or growing chemical gardens, or gotten holes in your clothes, or burned yourself—the members of the Chemistry Club have. But the many interesting experiments are not the only functions of the club. Part of the meetings are devoted to interesting movies on such topics as Why Airplanes Fly,” or The Study of the Surface of the Earth. SJ Clubs The Lang Three of the most important and influential clubs in Vineland High School arc the language clubs. They all follow the same principal of aiding the students in becoming better acquainted with the language they are studying. In their meetings these organizations make it a habit of speaking as little English as possible. All business and conversation is carried on in the language of that club. Plays, talks on customs, and various other types of entertain- ment are enjoyed by the members of these different groups. The French Club holds its meeting once a month in the evening at one of the member’s home. At Christmas time a Christmas party was held complete with ”Le Pere Noel”, the French Santa Claus, ex- change of gifts, and French carols. Also in the Christmas spirit was the Spanish Club's Christmas Party. Meeting after school the group celebrated the holiday in their own style, featuring the breaking of the pinata. A highlight of their year was their annual Turkey Trot held just before Thanksgiving, attracting a large crowd to the gym. In sponsoring dances the Italian Club is not to be overlooked. Their St. Patrick's Dance provided an evening of real enjoyment for the town’s younger set. These three organizations have greatly helped the students to a greater enjoyment in the study of foreign languages. Through the expert help of their advisers these clubs have proved a real asset to Vineland High School. First Row: R. Leonetti. L. Leonardo. A. Mennone—Treasurer. B. Ruberti—Vice President. Miss G. One of the outstanding events of the year was their Mother’s Night. The girls flayed host to their mothers and served their own refreshments. The girls made money by selling metal sponges, adding greatly to the treasury. At their meetings the girls discuss the newest aspects in Home Economics, good foods, and the latest methods of homemaking. The Vineland High School branch of the national organization, the Future Farmers of America, is another one of the outstanding clubs providing extra activity that is not found in the actual classroom. As is evident, by the name, that the Future Farmers is an organization of boys who plan to be farmers or who are studying agriculture. During their meetings the boys discuss various f)hascs and problems of farming. Most of the boys ive on farms and grow some produce of their own. Yes, everyyone looks forward to the Friday on which the Hi Spots is distributed, and as you all know this is one time that everyone is found busily engag- ed reading the school paper. Found in this paper, which is published eight times a year, is a complete coverage of past and future news, plus numerous snappy features as added attractions. The Hi Spots is put out by the Journalism I and II classes; they meet every seventh and eighth periods in room 201. During the year the Hi Spots staff members attend various press conferences where they receive new ideas for bettering the school publication. This year they attended conferences at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, and Columbia University in New York, which are sponsored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Every spring the Hi Spots sends delegates to the Temple Press Tournament to compete with other schools in their journalistic abilities. 83 First Row: J. Wightman. B. Rubcrti. R. CicheUi. G. Stern. P. All decked out in their sharp new uniforms the band provides just the right amount of pep at the football games and has made a good showing in many of the local parades. This year the school was honored to play host to the South Jersey District Band Concert, on March 13. Six members of our band represented our school. They were Alex Loukashenok, Carmen Galzarano, Richard Cohen, George Franchetta, Larry Le Gore, and Nick Possumato. BAND DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS Girls, pick up your feet!” Those words certainly sound familiar to any mem- ber of the Drum Bugle Corps. Who will ever forget those long, grueling hours of practice in the hot sun? But, it was worth it. The corps, playing at all the football games and many local parades, really looked snappy in their new uniforms. The beautiful and talented twirlers added just the right amount of spirit and color to the half times of those gridiron tussles. The girls participated in a contest at the Vineland Armory and won a beautiful trophy which was pre- sented by Senator Elmer H. Wcnc. Vineland High can well be proud of this snappy corps. Below Right: Rough and tumble at the Atlantic City game. The 1947 V.H.S. football team, though not the greatest in the history of the school, was certainly a fine one. A record of six wins and three losses against the type of competition which Vineland had is a record of which to be proud. The Red and Grav started off the season with a string of three wins, beating Glassboro to the tune of 7-6, Holy Spirit 6-0, and shading the old enemy, Collingswood, 7-6. The string was broken the next week, however, as Camden beat the Poultry Clan 12-0 at Farnham Park in Camden. Bristol High School of Pennsylvania fell 18-0 to become tne fourth victim, but a strong Atlantic City team beat Vineland 13-0 and on a cold, muddy field in Atlantic City. Then came the Bridgeton game! Bridgeton fans and the team expected to see a slaughter of fifty points or more and they came to Vineland in droves. The final score was Bridgeton on the long end of a 15-12 count but the Red and Gray put up one of the greatest battles ever seen on Gittone field, coming the nearest of any club toward spoiling Bridgeton’s undefeated season. The remainder of the season was finished in unexpected style with easy victories over Woodrow Wilson, 22-6, and Millville, 19 0. One of the main reasons for the season’s success was the coaching. Head Coach Danny Testa and Assistants Norman Walsh, Charles Furlong, and Cosmo Minifri, displayed great loyalty and patience in guiding the team over some of the rough spots. Ten members of our senior class of 1948 were members of the team. These were: Junior Leonardo, Frank Mangino, Sol Rosa, Bob DiEmma, Jimmy Alexander, Aldo Pancheri, Ted Perry, Bob Osborn, Joe Panicheuo and Serge Mavroff. Frank Mangino was elected permanent captain of the team by an unanimous vote at the end of the season. Jimmy Alexander was again named All South Jersey guard while Frank Mangino received the Elmer Wene Outstanding Player Award and the Times Journal Most Valuable Player Award. The 1947-48 Basketball squad started the season like a house afire, winning three out of its first four games including Gloucester, New Brunswick, and Woodrow Wilson, but start- ing with the first Bridgeton game the team hit a snag and a very mediocre season ensued. At the time the Record went to press, Vineland had won eight games and lost eight games, losing all eight games to group four competition—bowing twice to Bridgeton, Collingswood, and Trenton and once to Camden and Woodrow Wilson. The victories were two over Gloucester, two over Sacred Heart and one each over New Brunswick, Woodrow Wilson, Millville, and the Alumni. Seniors on the team are Don Bernardini, Irwin Gosman, Joe Panichello, Joel Lcuchter, Junior Leonardo and Martin Meyer. Don Bernardini was elected permanent captain unani- mously at the beginning of the campaign. Coach Cosh is to be highly commended for his patience and loyalty toward the team in spite of adversity. Two of the victories were at the expense of a helpless Millville team, 5-4 and 7-4. The others were single victories over Gloucester, 3- 0 and Bridgeton, 8-7. We are able to laugh now at the “greenness we pos- sessed—at the awe and fear in which we beheld the almighty seniors—at the many shrill rings of the morning bells—at the shouts (of pain) issuing from the gym— at our timorous contributions to the ear-spliting yells of seniors a: pep rallies ... at our Isn't that teacher awful!” and ... I wonder where that room is” . . . and particuraly when the upper classmen tried to pull that ancient elevator gag on us. After the first pangs of strangeness and inferiority were surmounted our class got down to brass tacks. We had the distinction of being the largest class ever to be en- rolled which may account for the many promising fresh- men who made the football team. Our first assembly in V.M.S. was in commemoration of Brotherhood Week; It was acclaimed a smash hit” by the student body. It added much to our prestige but we wondered if the unusual length of the program had anything to do with this. We remember that several prominent townspeople took part in it besides the mem- bers of Miss Sternberg s English classes. Active participants were: Ruth Crane, Mary Webb, Joyce Petway, Phyllis Petway, Phyllis Perry, Donald Barsky, Gershon Stern, Ruth Arbuckel, Nick Posenti, Ruth Swenlin, Billy Stone, William Stubee, Joel Leuchter, Domenica Cichetti and Robert Osborn. Remember the old world and modern dances presented by Nancy Backman, Raymond Arvio. Charles Kulp, Patty Unsworth, Danny Weber, and Janet Taylor? With the distant Washington Trip in mind, we at- tacked the Magazine Drive with vigor and Richard Jenkins, a member of our class, brought in the highest amount of sales and was awarded a $25 war bond as the first prize. Several freshmen who went out for dramatics that year appeared in the Cap and Dagger Dramatic Club's presentation of Anne of Green Gables. We were proud of Clara Shmoukler, Domenica Cichetti and Virginia Smith. When the annual Girls' Public Speaking Contest awards were given, it was the first time in the history of the Public Speaking Contest at Vineland Hieh that two persons tied for the same award. Gladys Bach, a senior, and Domenica Cichetti, one of us. tied for second place. Another freshie, Nina Ruth Gilcttc took part in the program. Towards the end of the year we selected Robert Osborn to represent our class during Boy Week, which fell in May. Though our class had not been organized during the year, we could still boast of many accomplishments and as the year drew to a close we had been assimilated into V.H.S. society, or so we thought. SOPHOMORE YEAR As sophomores we felt more at home and as far as the freshmen were concerned we soon developed a feeling of contempt and scorn. Our ways, however, were not given to incessant amusement and over-confidence for that all-important goal, graduation, had come into view. More of our classmen went out for activities and sports. Early in the year we elected class officers. They were: President. Robert Osborn; Vice-President, James Simp- son; Secretary, Rita Cichetti; and Treasurer, Richard Hunt. Remember that first big meeting we held in the audi- torium? Drives of all sorts came up and we made a good showing. This was the year that the sophomore girls who wanted to be drum majorettes were given the opportunity to learn how to twirl. Classes took place every Saturday in the gym. Those who made the grade were u is Atkin- son. Nancy Backman, Betty Bruge, Jeanette Ernest, Julia Becker, Mabel Hansen, Dolores BufTa, Alvera Gallo, Theresa Murphy, Jacqueline Wightman, Jackie Oliva. Laurel Pagnam. Janet Taylor, and Patty Unsworth. Patty Unsworth and Janet Taylor went on to greater prominence when they were chosen as the new drum majorettes. The first wrestling matches ever staged at Vineland High appeared that year. Among our classmen who made able mat men were Ralph Clark, Ralph Sathcr, Herbert Hutchinson, and William Hollenback. Will we ever forget the hit Marvin Reed scored in the Dramatic Club play Junior Miss with those never- to-be-forgotten words That's splendid?” And then there was An Ideal Classroom —a skit dealing with a student's version of how a class should be run. The hi-light of our sophomore year, it was under the direction of Mr. Cernigliaro, our capable class advisor, and written by a committee consisting of Marvin Reed, Robert Osborn. Bernice Bowers. Rita Cichetti, Janet Taylor, Patty Unsworth. Clara Shmoukler, Nina Ruth Gillette and Jackie Wightman. When we reached the end of another year's grind, our souls were fairly bursting with enthusiasm and we could hardly wait to be called upperclassmen. JUNIOR YEAR By this time we were old hands in V.H.S. and without further ado our class began blazing a memorable path toward our ultimate goal—graduation. Leading the class of '48 in its third year were President Frank Mangino. Vice-President Robert Osborn. Secretary Rita Cichetti, and Treasurer Joe Bemi. For our class flower we selected the Gardenia, and when it came to colors, green HISTORY and white turned out to be the most popular combination. In our motto, With the ropes of the past we will ring the bells of the future.” is revealed some of our bound less hope for what is yet to come. Spurred on bv the leadership of Dick Desser and the bubbling initiative of Vince Lociccro, Lehockcy's Gents from Room in staged a very successful Christmas Dance that enriched the homeroom treasury by a size- able sum. At the 51st annual Girls' Public Speaking Contest, Nina Ruth Gillette grabbed top honors with her humorous selection, The Train to Mauro. A little while after the school year opened. Juniors began selling variety cards for a dollar, with the student receiving 50 cents profit for each box. This venture was an overwhelming success, as we far surpassed the goal. Another activity sponsored by the class were dances every Friday night after home basketball games, which were met with great enthusiasm. Popular Frank Mangino, class President and a standout tackle on the football team, was elected by our class to represent Vineland High during State Boys' Week at Rutgers University. The evening of May 2, 1947 found us presenting our Junior Class Play, Jumpin' Jupiter, with the timely assistance of the Dramatic Club. Centering around $50,000 worth of hot money and the efforts of the unlucky finders to get rid of it. the play was the entef- taining work of a cast consisting of Domenica Cichetti, Virginia Smith. Janet Taylor, Marvin Reed, Norman Altcrman, Ruth Arbuckel, Nina Ruth Gillette, Tommy Mitchell, Shirlev Koitz, George Thomas. Marie Hornack. and Antoinette Bcrni. In the wings were directors Miss Doris Epstein and Mr. Edward Arnadc. Both socially and financially Jumpin' Jupiter was a big success. Topping off the ice cream sundae of our Junior Year came a bright red cherry, the Junior-Senior Prom, based on the theme Starlight Time.” In the dreamy atmo- sphere of a moonlit sky twinkling with silver stars. Fiankie Testa's orchestra providing the music; the Prom fulfilled everyone's expectations. As the year drew to a close, we set our sights for even greater accomplishments in our final and greatest session at V.H.S. when we could at last call ourselves Seniors. SENIOR YEAR Well, the long-awaited time finally arrived; at last the glory of high and mighty Seniors was ours. For a little while we merely stood on our pedestals, scornfully looking down at the lowly underclassmen. But then, with a loud pop, the bubble of our daydreams burst, and we settled down to some real work. Husky Frank Mangino was re-elected to the post of Class President, with Jimmy Simpson as Vice-President, Lois Atkinson, Secretary, and Joe Berni, Treasurer. Representing the Senior Class in the Student Council were Henry Angelo and Marilyn Holden. As Magazine sales rolled around again, we Seniors far outdistanced the other classes, collecting almost $3000. Answering the call of national preparedness, quite a few seniors enlisted in the National Guard, when that organization began its recruiting campaign. Meanwhile, another group of thirteen Seniors were chosen by their classmates to try their luck in the Pepsi-Cola Scholarship Contest. Primarily for the benefit of our class, the guidance department sponsored a Career Night. Experts in a great variety of vocations were secured to speak to interested students. Who can forget that week in late November when we all tried to look our sharpest for the Year Book photo- grapher. And then, when the prints finally came in, remember the amusing variety of expressions that stole across the faces of the Seniors as they viewed their like- nesses on paper? Jackie Oliva got quite a thrill out of her singing role in the All-State High School Chorus at Atlantic City, and several other Seniors participated in musical events during the year. The house lights dim; out of the inky blackness hundreds of eager eyes focus expectantly on the black- ened stage. Suddenly with a flashing burst of stage- lights, the deep crimson curtains arc parted, and the Senior Play begins to roll along its merry way. Yes, for most of those who saw it, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay” furnished a barrel-full of humorus entertain- ment. Nina Ruth Gillette and Domenica Cichetti in the leading roles, revealed themselves as a pair of very talented comediennes and actresses. And the packed houses both nights poured a tidy profit into the coffers of the Senior Class Treasury. Thus, through he untiring efforts of both students and faculty members, the Senior Play proved a huge success. Gee whiz, there certainly were a lot of important events in our Senior Year. Very few. I'm sure, will forget the trip to Washington. It was one of those priceless things that you cherish in your memory to tell your grandchildren. First the long, colorful bus journey; the large number of massive and imposing buildings that house the inner workings of the United States Govern- ment; the noisy, clanging night life of Washington, D.C., with its blinking colored lights shining out of the darkness; and finally the reappearance of home-sweet- home. Then there was the Prom, with its graceful whirling couples—another big success. But all these many and varied blocks of achievement were only stepping stones to the peak of the mountain— the grand finale of our four years in Vineland High— GRADUATION! Here at last was the end of the road for the Senior class. As we looked back over the long, winding path of high school that lay behind us, a legion of emotions crowded forward into our hearts. For some there was joy—a feeling of independence; for most, a deep sadness and regret, perhaps a touch of loneliness. Regardless of our feelings, graduation was a time for almost all of us in the Senior Clas to murmcr Goodbye” to V.H.S. and to shout Hello to the world which lay before us. 1 Ro e o ru co 103 r JUNIOR SENIOR PROM 194T Buzz—Oh, oh! There's the doorbell and you aren’t even ready. Well, come on, put those last minute touches on, mustn't keep your date waiting too long. Yes, it's our Junior-Senior Prom. The date? May 23, 1947 . . . What a lovely time we had. Upon reaching the gym, you were greeted by the gang.” Then, before you knew it you were dancing to the melodious music of Frankie Testa’s Orchestra. Weren’t the decorations lovely? The theme Starlight Time” was carried out in a dreamy atmosphere of silvery stars suspended in a moonlit sky. To fit the mood, Estrellita, little star, was featured as the theme song. Of course, you simply had to visit the rock garden featured. So round and round you danced, feeling like Cinderella and the Prince. Before you knew it though, the clock struck one and the night came to a close for Miss Cinderella of the class of ’48. But not before you sneaked one backward glance at the gym—a last remembcrancc of your Junior-Senior Prom.
