SCHOOL VIEWS Our trophy cate offert ample proof of our high school teams' athletic prowess. Impressive night scene—memories. juiet and serene moods and ioyt of our past and present. Through the portals of the main entrance: Enter to learn—go forth to serve.' FO REWORD Wc, the Senior Record Staff, have attempted to por- tray life as we know and remember it in Vineland High School. As our classmates look through this Record now and in the future, wc hope that the pictures of their class- mates and teachers, and the scenes from their classrooms will bring back vivid memories of their high school days. It has also been our desire to give to our community a true picture of the life and spirit of Vineland High School. If we achieve these hopes in any degree, no matter how small, our purpose and aims shall have been gained and our endeavors at least partially successful. MARGARET C. PHILLIPS, our teacher and friend, we, the class of 1943, dedicate The Record. Through our years in Vineland High School the better we have become acquainted with her the more our affection has grown. Her sense of humor, her friendliness, and her aid as financial adviser have brought her close to us and have reserved for her, along with our most cherished school-day memories, a place in our hearts. ScIITIIHcI 3 L3HV0HVW FORMER EXECUTIVES DR. LAWRENCE R. WINCHELL County Superintendent of Schools Newark Normal School College of City of New York, B.S. Columbia University. M.A. Rutgers University, Ed.D. As Supervising Principal of the Vineland- Landis Township Public Schools, Dr. Winchcll has greatly influenced our high school education. His pleasing personality and his genuine interest in us have won our respect and admiration. MRS. R. D. CLIPPINGER Principal of Vineland High School. 19$ I'1942 Ohio Northern University, B.A., M.A. During our first three years in Vineland High School Mrs. Clippingcr, our former principal, gave us much valuahlc assistance and guidance. We shall always remember her for her kindness, patience, sound advice, and co-operative spirit; above all, her motherly interest and understand- ing will be a happy memory in our lives. Ten ADMINISTRATION MR. WILLIAM H. FLAHARTY Su erittt ndfnt of Schools Franklin and Marshall College, B.S. Rutgers University, Ed.M. “It has fallen your lot to complete your high school years in the midst of the greatest struggle that the world has ever known. This is a challenge to your ability to withstand the unshackled forces of evil and to aid in their ultimate control. Your future happiness and that of the world is dependent upon how you meet this challenge. “The very first step is to go forward believing in yourselves. Others believe in you and arc sure you will meet the need for strong, virile, fearless and conscientious individuals. My best wishes go with you.” William H. Flaharty ADMINISTRATION MISS MARY ROSSI Principal College of St. Elizabeth, B.S. Columbia University, M.A. “Graduating at a time of total war, the Class of 1945 has an unprecedented opportunity to Go forth to serve. Whether your place, after you leave Vineland High School, be in the armed forces, in the production of the sinews of war. or on the home front, you will be asked to give unstintingly of your time, energy, and talents. You will have to work longer and harder hours, deprive yourself of luxuries and pleasures, sac nficc comforts and necessities, to preserve the democracy you now enjoy. Arc you prepared to do this? Have the ideals which we have tried to pass on to you been sufficiently impressive to insure that they will be maintained, like a bridge across the span of years, joining the traditions of your Alma Mater with the loyalty and sue- cess of its Alumni? We hope they have. The answer lies with you. Mary E. Rossi MR. JACK PENNINO Dean of Boys Ocean City Summer School Temple University Columbia College Rutgers University University of Pennsylvania—School of Industrial Arts, A.B. “'By tradition's decree, a yearbook possesses double significance. First, it attempts to weld the moments of the years into a chain of ex- pcriences that constitute high school life. From another standpoint it is a means by which those long gone from the classroom can relive happy years and renew affection for once intimate ‘halls and walls. In this sense, it effects a true bond between graduate and alma mater. Congratulations, Graduates. I wish you God Speed. The Victory Corps, proposed in October 1942, was offered as a nation-wide plan of organization into which schools might, if they desired, fit their existing wartime organiza- tions. The aims of this Corps arc two-fold: first, to train young people for the war service they arc to perform after leaving school; second, to give them an opportunity to participate in the community's war effort while still in school. Membership is voluntary, and any pupil in any grade who meets the following conditions may apply for general membership: (1) the student should be participating in a school phys- ical fitness program appropriate to his abilities and needs in the light of his probable contri- bution to the war effort; (2) the student should be studying or have studied school courses appropriate to his age, grade, ability, and probable immediate and future usefulness to the nation's war effort, within the limits of the facilities of the school; (3) the student should be currently participating in at least one important continuing or recurring wartime activity or service. In the Junior and Senior years, pupils may enroll or be advanced to membership in the five specialized sections of the Corps. Members of these special divisions engage in specific preparatory courses for the Armed Services. In Vineland High School about four hundred, over a third of the student body, have enrolled in the Victory Corps. The divisions of the Corps and the faculty leaders of each group are as follows: Air Division Sea Division Land Division Production General Director John Lehocky J. Albert Starkey Andrew Perino Edith Siddons Jack Pennino Theresa Hcmi—Chairman Helen Miller Clarion Cosh Robert Goodicr—Chairman William Austin Lillian Berle Community Service Ralph Robinson—Chairman Mac Ardito Jerry Caponigro William Gardclla Harriet Hunsbcrgcr Arlene Kimball Anna Markham Gilda Mendico Raymond Moyer General Membership Bennett Matlack —Chairman Margaret Cooke Rita Cresci Ncllo Dallolio The following classes were inaugurated and taught during activity periods from February to June: Pre-Flight Training — J. Albert Starkey and Andrew Perino Review of Arithmetic — Theresa Hcnzi Touch Typing for Signal Corps Helen Miller The entire Victory Corps, as outlined and planned this year, will be definitely function- ing in the fall. From all appearances, Vineland High School will be keeping in step with our community's slogan, Vineland for Victory.” ALMA MATER Though the hoys of Millville High School Love the orange and the blue; And the sturdy sons of Bridgeton To the red and white arc true; We will cheer for dear old Vineland, The school we'll love for aye, For all her sons are loyal To her colors, Red and Gray. Oh, the four brief years of high school. On the fleeting wings of time. Bear us on to fields of vision. Where we scale new heights sublime: Mid our pleasures, cares, and sorrows As we toil from day to day, Let us cheer for Vineland High School And her colors. Red and Gray. When the dreams of youth arc over, And our race is almost run; When from life all care we've banished. Finished what we've here begun, May our fondest memories wander To the place we love alway. That is dear old Vineland High School With her colors. Red and Gray. CLASS OFFICERS John Schneider President Lawrence Schenck Vice-President Evelyn Hubbard Secretary Joseph Quarella Treasurer CLASS SONG Music: Light a Candle in the Chapel Vineland High, we now must leave you, Sch x)l and friends we hold so dear. Do not let our parting grieve you; We see our task before us clear. Flag and country now arc calling. For vict'ry we'll do or we'll die, To our school we will bring honor, Au revoir, dear Vineland High. Vineland High, we now are parting, 'Tis, oh, so hard to say goodbye. Friends and teachers, we shall miss you. But mem'ries of you will not die. • Where 'er a kindly fate may lead us, “Fight on! will be our battle-cry. We go forth now for Old Glory, So farewell, dear Vineland High.
