Antiuat Elite: BEBKABD SOEK Alvor.ljlij Xasa;«r Six ENTER TO LEARN Lanier to oLearn ” is the motto that greets all freshmen entering the doors of Vineland High School. The members of the class of 1941 have shown by excelling in scholastic, as well as ex- tra-curricular, activities that we have closely followed the wise words of this maxim. These endeavors have enabled us to put into effect the other half of our motto, Co Forth to Serve.” It is our hope that in years hence, when the memory of our high school days grows dim, the pages of The Album will serve to penetrate the mists that shroud the past and bring back vivid memories of our activities, associations, and friendships. It purpose is to unify all student organizations under one gen- eral control, to aid in the internal administra- tion of the school, and to promote leadership, co- operation, loyalty, and the general activities of the school. Under the able leadership of Richard Crangle, the Student Council carried out and surpassed the good example set by preceding groups. Through the efforts of the members, the Red Cross and Tuberculosis Seal Drives and the cam- paign for toys and canned goods for the needy were successful. The Council joined with the Art Club in making the Christmas decorations record-breaking. Several meetings were opened to all interested students, and the important plans and decisions were posted on the bulletin boards in the hall and classrooms and were printed in the Hi- Spots. The lost and Found Department is still car- ried on. A list of the articles turned in is posted on the bulletin board, every Friday during the lunch periods, the students may claim their property for a few pennies. This group, composed of presidents and rep- resentatives of various clubs, has done much in uniting the students and promoting self- government in Vineland High School. President ..............................Richard Crangle Tier-President ...........................Dante Giuliani Secretary......................Viola Procaccino Treasurer ................Mary Jane Carhart Jdvitfr ..................Mrs. Ullian Rubinoff ThE purpose of the Art Club is to help peo- pit who have an interest in art to develop thi imereti to the fullest extent, to acquaint them with material which are not u ed in an daw became of lack of time, and to educate the people of Vineland that art exitt in every phaie of life. The artist who can produce beau- tiful painting , sketche , and dex'gn is greatly envied by all. As a member of th: Art Club, a student hat every opportunity to put this talent to use. This year the girl and boys have taken a liking to wearing their names carved into a wooden pin. These pins, together with pictures, boxes, and other articles, were made and so'd by the artists. Exhibits, where many articles made by the students were put up for sale, were held. The members of the Art Club did an excep- tionally fine job with the Christmas decora- tions this year. They worked faithfully every- day in order to have the interior of the schcol in keeping with the general spirit. On the grounds in front of the school was erected a manger scene which was kept lighted for the public throughout the entire Christmas vacation. Through the effort of the Art Club, a keener interest in art has been created among the students. Jittt row C Mills, t). Spvnosi, Mrs Antoinette Rogers. tacolty adviser; M. CoMfcsa. I Labs lo help prepare and arrange informative, educational, and entertaining material to pre- tent to the student body, to take care of stage properties, and to form a social club for its members are the goals of the Assembly Club. Better and more interesting programs are promoted by working with other clubs or classes that wish to put on an assembly. By the co- operation of this group and the senior class, the distinguished guest, Mr. l.eRoy Miller of Station KYW, was brought before the student body. So popular with the upper classmen was the Musical docker, as lie is called, that the Assembly Club asked him to return and perform for the Freshmen and Sophomores. Another popular form of assembly with the students is the musical one. This type of pro- gram enables the student to enjoy his favorite music—swing—and to bring new talent into the open. This was so with Joe Dale (Dales- sandro) and his Orchestra. His group is an exceptionally skilled one and claims as its vocal- ists Blanche Black, Phillips Dover, and Dorn (Wham) Tuso. Their assembly programs were exceptionally well received by the student body. In addition to presenting enjoyable programs, the Assembly Club has sponsored many suc- cessful dances and is known for the social events offered its members. Tl IE purpose of the Choral Gub i to promote better music and the appreciation of good music in our school. The club gives its members an opportunity to increase their knowledge of good musk, to partkipate in group singing, and to further any talent in solo singing. This group, composed entirely of girls, did much to aid in the Christmas assembly pro- gram by the singing of many beautiful carols. They also sang during the Baccalaureate service for the graduating dass in June. These talented girls of the Choral Club pre- sent an annual cantata. The one given this year was entitled Mondahmin, which means com and is an Amerkan-lndian legend. The Choral Club holds its meeting on Wed- nesday and practices singing in the gym cor- ridor during school hours. The club sponsored many social affairs in- cluding a very successful patriotic dance with the gym decorated in red, white, and blue. At the end of the year, the girls held a picnic as the final social function. For the Thanksgiving Day assembly, this group presented an appro- priate one-act comedy called Turkey Red, in which the members of the household give away some part of the delicious dinner to a needy family, resulting in having to eat dinner out. For the Christmas holiday, a one-act play called Grandma's Xmas Guest was presented. Th; usual Christmas spirit shone through in old- fashioned Grandmother's lesson to a thief. Their duty is to see that no student passes through the halls or goes to his locker without permission from a teacher. In order to become a member of this group, the student must have grades of honor students—not lower than a C—and he must have an absolutely commendable character. In other words, people for these posts must be of highest integrity and dependability. The Honor Patrol meets on the first Friday of every month during the activity periods. Because they are really another group of the Traffic Squad, the members suggest new methods for improving traffic conditions in the school. The musically inclined students form this or- ganization of fine musicians who meet to practice every sixth period. This group plays for every event in the high school and supplies music for opening numbers, intermissions, and finales for various performances. Among the events played for are assemblies, the annual senior play, the Cap and Dagger Dramatic Club play, the boys' and girls' Public Speaking contests, and the senior baccalaureate service. The outstanding contribution of the Orchestra to the school this year was an assembly program in which several classical pieces and duets were rendered. Besides the pleasure derived from playing their favorite instrument with other students who are equally interested in music, this group usually has a picnic or a party to celebrate the end of the school year. SENIOR PLAY This year's Senior play, a hilarious comedy entitled June Mad,” was considered one of the best productions in many years. From then on the plot resolved itself into a scries of amusing incidents in an attempt to straighten out the love affairs of adolescents. The very successful play was presented on the evening of March 3 and was ably coached by Miss Helen J. Moore. Mention should also be made of Mrs. Margaret Phillips, adviser, for her excellence in financial administration. Third prize was given to Marjorie Gochnour for her version of The Waltz. This recitation depicted a girl dancing with a lumbering and clumsy young man. The Student Forum was organized to develop the talents of those students who have argumen- tative ability and enjoy discussing with other stu- dents present-day situations. This group goes over various questions thoroughly, which stimulate the minds of those members who participate in these debates. Through the many discussions, the stu- dents hear other opinions and are able to draw more accurate conclusions. A broader knowledge of the news highlights is obtained. Among the interesting topics discussed were the following: Should the United States give aid to Britain? How should we meet dictator aggressors in the Americas? Should our national debt limit be raised to sixty billion dollars? National questions were not the only ones dis- cussed, however. A forum was held in the audi- torium and the audience joined in to discuss gen- eral school problems. Such questions as What do the boys and girls of V. H. This club is a newly formed one and gives the students an opportunity to voice their opinions and to carry out the tradition of a democratic system in Vineland High School. J.r.t M I Conarii. The main branche of the large organization are the Morning Patrol, whose duty is to keep stu- dents out of the halls before the bell rings in the morning, the Hall Patrol, which keeps traffic in the corridors regulated and moving: and the Cafe- teria Patrol, which does a fine job keeping the cafeteria clean and in order during lunch period. A new branch, called the Assembly Patrol, was added to the Traffic Squad thit year as an experi- ment. The duty of this new group i to tee that students passing in the halls during an assembly arc quiet and have a written pass from a teacher. In this way there is less danger of disturbance during a program. This club, under the leadership of Mrs. Rubi- nolf, has been on the alert for improvement in the school. I hiring their meetings many subjects relating to traffic conditions are discussed. Among them are problems that occur at the various posts, the congestion in the halls, the many improve- ments suggested by the students, the replacement of officers at different posts, and any other prob- lems that may have arisen. Because they contribute so much to better oper- ations in the school, the Traffic Squad is given a big dance in its honor. As yet, it is mainly an experi- ment, hut it has proven highly successful. The idea was originated when the need for sports for the feminine athletes became acute. It is definitely known that the number of sports available does not meet the requirements of the many enthusiasts. The aim of the club is to provide clean, whole- some entertainment for those girls who really take an interest in such an enterprise. I ligh standards have been set for qualifications, and we hope to maintain them in forthcoming years. Each Monday afternoon the Alley Cats and Mrs. Rubinoff go down to the Bowling Academy to try their skill. With her expert advice and excellent methods, Mrs. Rubinolf is producing champion bowlers. The club would like to see the boys of Vineland High organize themselves into a similar group and challenge the girls to compet- itive meets and championship matches. Recently the girls motored to Salem to spend the afternoon in the Recreational Centre alleys. Other trips of the same nature have been planned for the remainder of this year and the following ones. The only officer of the club exclusive of the sponsor and the founder is the treasurer, Betty Reisenwitz. The club is a non profit organization, as the only dues paid is the actual expense of the afternoon. BOWLING CLUB Ont hinjrij xm fini mi Swro. E. Prttisinl. C Ster . C. Tennis is a great sport and Vineland High School has an excellent girls’ team. Last year our girls were handicapped by not possessing a court on which to practice before the matches, liven though sufficient preschedule drill was not possible, the girls went through each match with flying colors because they possessed the skill and sportsmanship that is common to all Vineland High School athletes. The team plays five matches of singles and two matches of doubles with each opponent they meet. Ijst year they won thirteen matches out of twenty-nine. Mrs. Viola, the girls' coach, instructs them in the correct form, strokes and general principles of this invigorating and fast game. To her goes much credit for her excellent guidance throughout the tennis season.
