The Steel City where bridges are born adds another interesting chapter to its story of Bridge Building in Nineteen Hundred Fifty-eight, its Bicentennial year. Pittsburgh contributed men and mate- rials for the construction of the world's largest suspension span, The Mackinac Straits Bridge, which was completed only a few months ago. Since bridges signify the idea of con- nection and crossing, graduation to us is symbolic of the bridge from adolescence into maturity. For twenty-five years the sheltering halls of Vincentian High School have sent forth into the dubious world determined young girls who have made successful crossings. The Senior Class of '58 has striven forward toward this goal. We must go on to bigger and greater bridges as did those who have preceded us. We are about to step from this bridge on to the solid ground of responsibility and service as young adults. As the leaves of time are recovered and remembered in this yearbook, journey with us over our span of time, from the dim yesterdays, to the vivid todays, into the hopeful tomorrows. Resident and day students are accepted. Establishment of the school dates back to 1932. lt is conducted by the Vincentian Sisters of Charity. The Founder and first Principal, Reverend John Hagel, held that position until his unexpected death January 10, 1935. Reverend Mother M, Emerentiana, Foundress of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity in the United States, was the School's first President. November 14, 1932, the School was placed on the Accredited List of Second- ary Schools by the Department of Public Instruction, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Credentials Division. Academic and General Courses are offered. In its quarter century of service the School has aimed to help the child to formulate a working concept of life by developing the attitudes, understand- ings, and habits necessary for Christ- like living in this generation in our American democratic Society. The ulti- mate aim of the School is to aid the pupil to attain the final purpose of Education which is absolute TRUTH, GOODNESS, and BEAUTY, namely Tl-IE BEATIFIC VISION. We are placed through the media of an in- vincible religious foundation onto the invisible bridge that leads from earth to heaven. In a sense we do not really depart from that bridge at the completion of our school years for that occurs only at life's end. But many of the external practices of it will fade into our yester- days -- Sodality, Mission Club, Fatima Club, Sacred Heart Club. Discreet and provident conquerors build up a bridge of gold, Massinger---'The Guardian Act l Sc. l And what discreet conquerors we did have in our Student Council Organization! These officers repeatedly renewed the vision of our bridge of learning by reminding us of our duties and rights concerning it. Thus -we were enabled to visualize the impressiveness of the structure. They not only renewed the vision, buttheyalso enhanced it by conducting the Christmas and Valentine parties which encouraged the social wellsbeing ofthe students. Cultural advancement was heightened by the spreading of good Catholic Literature during Catholic Press month of February. As students, we have ourselves labored, building and traveling over the span of our adolescent life. At times, the immensity of the supporters has overwhelmed us, the veil which oftentimes clouded the other side confused us, the trials of continuing on our way hampered us. But there was always that very basic strength and beauty of a bridge around us. We were always encouraged to lift our eyes to heaven, along with the pillars of the bridge which towerinto the sky. We always felt a serene gladness when our eyes met the placid mirror ofwater. Itis these things which conjure sentiments of gratitude as we depart. It is hoped that the life ofeach and every one of us will be a series of bridges, of learning, of living, of loving. For isn't our life merely a bridge -- into Eternity with ALL LOVEprevail- ing evermore? ,V W 4 ,V fr, J. zlgffffgi x .-u 1, Juv 213:13 MMS, ww , 'uwffh A 'li gf, -., r? ,-4, . . Y .J:ifTf'. mi.: gf!
