Phillippe, Vincennes University’s Director of Financial Aid, died July 12, 1986, of leukemia. He was born July 15, 1946, in Vincennes, the son of Carlos and June Preston Phillippe, and is survived by a wife Carol and two children, Darcie and David. He earned Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Indiana State. He came to VU in 1970, and served at various periods as Dean of Students and Director of Financial Aid. Dave was truly a man for all seasons. The best and the brightest, a good husband, father, and friend. A man of great intelligence with the ability to think in a concise, analytical manner. He was a problem solver with few peers, and countless students and friends benefited from his deep understanding of human nature. No man dies as long as there is one person left in the living world who remembers him with fond recall, and shares a thought of him. Dave will always be with those who knew and loved him. He will be universally missed. IN MEMORIAM Cherie A. Baugh Christopher Kyle Huser Troy M. Pray 1968 - 1986 1965 - 1987 1966 - 1987 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Students: Vincennes University is an institution which has great “quality.” The student life and campus activities reflect the goal of providing quality education in the classroom and in campus events. The participation of students, faculty, staff, and administration makes that possible. In this publication is a summary of the 1986-1987 academic year activities. Students learn much by participating in clubs, organizations, and campus events. The yearbook staff has endeavored to capture in this book the spirit and essence of what makes Vincennes University an interesting place to pursue academic and career goals. I hope students enjoy the memories which come from the pictures of the 1986-1987 year. May it remind us all of our contribution to the success of the University fulfilling its mission. The University’s motto as found on the official seal is “Learn in Order to Serve.” Having student leadership opportunities, participating in campus events, and achieving educational goals allow students to develop their potential to the fullest. I wish everyone the very best, and hope you enjoy seeing and reading about the “quality” events at Vincennes University. The computers, in their second year of use, have helped the Student Services Department to get students in and out of registra- tion in a shorter time period. Freshmen may never know the joy of standing in long lines waiting for classes. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS During the Fall semester, the International Students held a picnic to meet their Host Families. Vincennes has a very warm community which welcomes these students with open arms. The students have several activities during the year, one of which is their nationality nights, where the students treat their Host Families to foods and entertainment from their culture. The Host Families’ purpose is to support their student in what they do while at Vincennes University. ICE CREAM SOCIAL ACTIVITIES FAIR Butter pecan or vanilla? Ice cream, music, prizes, smiles, handshakes, and Jell-O slides welcome new students to the social organizations of Vincennes University. The Student Activities Office, together with the Greek and social organizations, spon- sored the annual ice cream and activities fair. Students could gather information on the ropes of social life at VU. Giving a little of yourself can be taken in a literal sense when it comes to giving blood. VU students get the chance to help out at the various Red Cross Bloodmobile visits during the school year. Vincennes University consistently has the highest number of blood donors per visit in the area. BLOODMOBILE 19 Six hundred ten excited Trailblazers filled the Wabash River at Kimmell Park to begin the 1986-87 year with the annual Tube Race. Teams consisting of five men and five women participated in one of the biggest races recorded at VU. The race ended at the Memorial Bridge, and winners were announced at the Victory Dance in Green Auditorium. 20 Na TUBE RACE WINNERS . Sigma Nu Flyers . Gamma Tau . Lambda Chi Alpha . Complex twisted the night away with one of the most popular performers of the 50’s — Chubby Checker. The concert was a special performance for the 1986 Dads’ Weekend. Chubby Checker not only performed his own music from the 50’s, but also introduced some new music to be coming out on his latest album. He also performed music by other artists of that decade. By the middle of the concert, Chubby Checker had students, parents, and faculty dancing down in front of the stage. A few of the students were pulled from the dancing area to the stage where they danced “the Twist” with Chubby Checker. Of all the people who joined Chubby on stage, the “Best Twister” award went to none other than the President of the University, Dr. Summers. 30 a STUDENT VOLUNTEER SERVICES PROGRAM Vincennes University was the recipient of a new grant from ACTION-VISTA under the title “Stu- dent Volunteer Services Program.” The purpose of the grant is to coordinate the efforts of student volunteers who will assist in the work of non-profit agencies throughout Knox County. VU’s students benefit from the program in many ways. It pro- vides them with a rewarding and worthwhile ac- tivity, and at the same time helps them identify their areas of interest and improve their qualifica- tions in the job market. A picnic was held at the end of the year to award the students for their achievements and participa- tion in the program. 31 Moms’ WEEKEND VARIETY SHOW 32 Students, parents, and staff were entertained with a variety of talent to begin Moms’ Weekend. The Library was dedicated in 1960 and named for Curtis G. Shake. In 1967, additional housing for historical documents and papers im- portant to early American history was built and dedicated to Byron R. Lewis. In 1985, a computer classroom and laboratory was added. Bookstack space was doubled, and study tables and carrels were added. Other new features inc luded three meeting rooms, offices, microfilm reader-printers, a new circulation-control desk, and an area for bibliographical retrieval. ol ym, 4 2B i ye , € a a STUDENT TRUSTEE L. The float was entered in the 500 Festival Parade May 23 and judged on animation, detail, and the theme, ‘Fiesta 500, In the Spirit of the Pan- American Games.” It was the winner of the Governor’s Trophy. The float design was drawn by the University’s commercial art students and finished by the Art Department. All aspects of construction were under the supervision of the Technology Division in cooperation with the school’s faculty and student body. A campus-wide contest to name the float yielded the title “The Spirit of Friendship, “El Espirito de la Amistad.” David Auxier, freshman from Muncie, Ind., received tickets to the 500 Race for his entry. 96 HONORS and AWARDS 1987 GOLD CORD RECIPIENTS: Rebecca Baker Danny Basso Kim Borer Tracie Burton Suzie Carmichael Gary Carter Victoria Cataldi Barbara Colson Jeff Couchenour Tammy Crisler Robert Collen Mark Daizell Rick Elwell Jackie Fleener Debra Frost Ashley Gardner Vera Glaspie Deborah Goldman Denise Green Terri Grumieaux Jackie Harris Kim (Kinman) Hoagland Thomas Hoffman Tim Holt Tyra Holt Michelle Diane Jones Perry Knust Nolan “Skip” Kuker Lesley Lawson Mike Leppert Tracy Loewenkamp Tamra L.
