The Hospitality Management Association was founded in 1984 to help students gain a better understanding of the professional and practical requirements of the Hospitality Industry. During the 1985-86 year, H.M.A., for short, was one of the most active clubs at Vincennes University. Jeff Kies is the club’s Advisor and officers of the year were: Shawn Niblick, president; Randy Baird, vice-president; Basil Vasilarakos, treasurer; Marisa Chamness, secretary; Terri Schick, banquet and catering manager; and Chris Cooley, campus club manager. H.M.A. during the school year operates a snack bar and a full service banquet and catering operation where the students donate their time. The H.M.A. has served over a thousand guests. In exchange for the hands-on experience, the H.M.A. tries to extend the VU motto “learn in order to serve.” This year in addition to our normal operations, H.M.A. participated in the tube race, Homecoming parade, received the best construction trophy, had fun in Almost Anything Goes, helped with banquets for V.U.’s special guests, colored eggs for the Easter egg hunt, donated time to “Blaze a clean Blazer Trail” on “Mom Carter’s Day,” as well as various car washes and H.M.A. trips to the state conventions. We were also educated by area experts in the hospitality industry during our bimonthly meetings. The president hopes that the students enjoyed the year, and that the H.M.A. becomes one of the most outstanding Hospitality Associations in the nation’s junior colleges.
