While at V.U. she was a founding member of Alpha Theta Chi, editor of the 1950 Re-Voo (V.U.’s Yearbook), and treasurer of the 1949 - 50 Senior Class. She continued her educa- tion at Indiana State University (Bachelor of Science in 1952) and Indiana University (Master of Science in Education, 1963). With the exception of a 5-year span shortly after her marriage to Cyrus Deem, Jr., teaching was her professional life. Her first teaching assignment was in Lawrenceville, IL. After a one-term substitute position at Vincennes University in 1958, Caroll taught in her native Johnson Township for 5 years. But it was in college teaching in home economics she found her real niche, and she returned to her alma mater in 1965 as Associate Professor of Home Economics. Later as Professor and Department Chair, she supervised the growth of the department through new academic transfer programs. She planned the occupational pro- gram in Food Service Management, coordinated the Day Care Center for children of facul- ty, staff and students, instituted a program for the food service managers in nursing homes, and supervised the instruction of nutrition courses for the Associate Degree and Practical Nursing program. Her service to the Trinity United Methodist Church, Campus Ministries, the Indiana and American Home Economics Associations, the Indiana Teachers Association, the American Vocational Association, area 4-H clubs as exemplary judge and to the campus through her academic and extra-curricular leadership are well documented. In 1970 Vincennes Universi- ty chose to award her the Blue and Gold Cord for faculty leadership and service. Ie Steven Clark 1965 - 85 IN MEMORIAM 85 - VU 1984 2 = S D Se 0 2 U A Message From The President 1984 - 85 Academic Year Dear V.U. Students: The 1984 - 85 academic year was one of record enrollment, outstanding activities and great memories. The purpose of the yearbook is to capture and interpret many aspects of campus life. The yearbook staff has worked diligently to picture the highlights of an important year in the lives of students and the University. As this yearbook is read, it may become obvious that Vincennes University has a full and rich campus life. Student government, fraternities, sororities, clubs, organizations and residence halls provide a living environment which makes pursuing a college education at V.U. interesting and fun. The major aspects of the students’ years at “Indiana’s oldest col- lege” are the classes and faculty whom the students are privileged to have. The high quality of the unique educational services available comes from the dedication of those who serve students. The motto of the University (which appears on its official seal) is, “Learn in order to serve.” V.U. students can be seen in this yearbook in learning situations in classes and ac- tivities with the goal of developing the skills and talents necessary to be of service in their future lives. I hope all campus people have great memories of the 1984 - 85 academic year... and will treasure this yearbook as a reflection of an important part of their past. Sincerely, Table Sanoarr Phillip M.
