DEDICATION This yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Richard Ertel. Professor Ertel made countless contributions to Vincennes University, one of which is the University Alma Mater. The following tribute is reprinted from the memorial service program. Richard Ertel’s life was music, and, because it was, each of us has been the benefactor. We will remember the laughter in the keyboards of the mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ which was his special pride, or in the pianos across campus that came alive to his touch, or living on through the fingers of his students who learned the beauty of the scales and chords through the patient instruction of a master. Born in Vincennes, Richard Ertel was graduated from Lincoln High School. He was awarded an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts at Vincennes University in 1949. He continued his education at the Chicago Conservatory of Music where he earned the bachelor’s and master’s degree in 1952 and 1953, respectively. He was undecided about a career in performing or teaching, and through the next few years he played on radio, stages and in clubs. He returned to Vincennes, and in 1961 he took the position as instructor in music at Vincennes University. Since 1974 he has served as chairman of the Music Department which annually graduates students in Music-Fine Arts and Music Theatre. Hundreds of others perform and study music as electives. Richard Ertel willingly shared his talents with all as he played for his own Sacred Heart and each of the Catholic Churches in Vincennes. Never was he too busy to play for campus events. His improvisations, his compositions including the Alma Mater, his musical selections and arrangements which were right for every occasion are part of the legacy he has left to those of us who have been his appreciative audience. When we hear the melodies of the mighty Wurlitzer, we will remember the smile of Richard Ertel as he put love into our music. Richard J. Ertel December 31, 1929-April 17, 1983

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The 1983-84 academic year was an outstanding year at Vincennes University. The greatest enrollment in the history of V.U. has been matched only by another record of the greatest number of graduates. The academic year will also be remembered as one of the busiest, with many outstanding activities and events occurring. What we all remember the most about our college years are the peo- ple whom we have met. This year- book not only tells the story of events and activities, but also of the people who participated and gave leadership to all that occurred. I know the memories of the year have been captured in pictures of im- portant events in the lives of thousands of students. In turn, the yearbook reflects the moments which have been special in the memory of all University people. As the reader enjoys the yearbook, may you sense the excitement of “learning” which has occurred and the tremendous amount of involve- ment of students in campus life. - In future years, I hope whoever views this yearbook will understand that students have fulfilled the University’s motto, “Learn in order to serve.” I wish everyone the best and h ope you have good memories of Vincen- nes University. h | Dr. Summers addresses the graduates during the commencement ceremonies in the Physical Education Complex.
