Summers began his career at Vincennes University in September, 1965 as Director of Financial Aid and Student Activities. Since that time he has served as dean of Men, dean of Students, chair- man of the Student Personnel Division and chairman of Student Per- sonnel Area and Registrar. He was named Director of Community Services in 1975 and a year later assumed the duties of coordinator for Advanced Institutional Development Program. On July 1, 1980 the Oath of Office was administered to Dr. Summers in front of the Indiana Territorial Capitol where the original charter was written. He became the Eighteenth President of Vincennes University. Additional duties and activities have included serving as a director of the All-Campus Variety Shows, the Miss Vincennes University Schol- arship Pageant, summer youth workshops, and developing slide pre- sentations about the history of Vincennes University. During the 1980-81 school year students, faculty and staff continued to see Dr. Summers’ great interest and involvement in student activi- ties. At registration he dipped ice cream on the steps on the Student Union. He was in the middle of the action during the Tube Race on the Wabash. He has danced with the best of them at the Tuesday night discos and other dances. He and Mrs. Summers have entertained stu- dents at their home. He has clapped his hands and tapped his foot with the Buffalo Chipkickers. We saw him ride his bicycle around the track at the Littlest 500, and some lucky students have gotten a ride in his 280 ZX. Dr. Summers is an enthusiastic leader. He has shown encouragement and support of students and their endeavors. Students at Vincennes University can truly feel that he is “their” President. 6-Inauguration A TRIBUTE TO DR. J. EDWARD KLINKER AND DR. HARRIETTE KLINKER 8-Tribute It is with the deepest regard that I wish Dean J. Edward Klinker the very best in his retirement plans. Dr. Klinker has been an outstanding faculty member for Purdue University and Vincennes University. He has held the highest academic procedures and processes which we have today. Besides being sincerely interested in the instructional process and the achievement of students, he has spent a great amount of his time attempting to help faculty and staff. The University’s curriculum and programs have grown under his leadership and he has furthered the development of the University’s mission and philosophy. It is because of his many achievements and accomplishments that I congratulate him and wish him well in his years ahead. I know his many friends join me in commending him for his outstanding service and expressing appreciation for all that he has achieved as Vice President for Instruction and Dean of When Dr. Harriette Klinker retired in Faculty at Vincennes University. May 1981, she concluded a long and distinguished career at Vincennes -Dr. Phillip M. Summers University. Dr. Klinker came to Vincennes in 1956 as a young teacher of English. In the intervening period she developed several new approaches to the teaching of Composition, including the current self-paced modularized approach used in English Composition I. In addition to her teaching, Dr. Klinker was a high ranking instructional administrator long before it was fashionable to have women in such positions. The watchwords of her career have been excellence in teaching, true service to both her students and the University, and friendship loyalty to her colleagues. Dr. Klinker will be sorely missed, but the example she has set will continue in the persons of the many young faculty whose careers she has influenced. -Dr. Phillip Pierpont Tribute-9 a en aa a nit PF) ee) Yn 48) BAR Br er Cc a im p u ’ S € I ; | campus life campus 1ife tee imei 12-Campus Life Campus Life-13 1A oS (i Be nat eae 2 OBS Campus Life mpus life nee Rayne eeaenes Ne, ed Sola Woah Campus Life-15 16-Campus Life ] iain OE Campus Life-17 pus life cami Pt -t-4-1 gaa od Cag 20-Faculty Administration Dr. Phillip M.
