BECKES, PRESIDENT OF VINCENNES UNIVERSITY A native of lndiana, Dr. lletzkes graduated from Yineennes lfniversitv in 1933, reeeived his 13.5. in edueation from lndiana State Toaehers College, Terre llaute, in 1935, 13.17. from the 1lleCOrmielc Theological Seminary, Chic-ago, l938g and his Ph.l3. from the Yale llniversity Craduate St-liool in 1945. ln 1943, he went to the International Couneil of Religious Education where he direeted the nation-wide program ofthe United Christian Youth Movement representin 10,000,000 youth of the United States and Canada from fl-0 Protestant denomin- ations. ln 1950, the lnternational Count-il of ieligious lildueation became the Division of Christian lddueation ol the National Couneil of Churtrlies ol Christ. ln the summer ol 194-7, Dr. lieekes was the head of the American delegation to the Second World Conlerenee of Christian Youth held in Oslo, Norway, and was a member ofthe Youth Department Committees of both the World Cotmeil of Churehes and the World Couneil of Christian lldutration. He eame to Vineennes University as President in june, 1950. Upon his arrival, plans for the development of an entirely new eampus for the historic- eollc-pe, yx hose roots date baelc to 1801, were pushed rapidly. 'llhe new eampus was oem-upied in Deto- ber, 1953, and has been deve oning eontinuously since. The eampus now ineludes some 75 aeres and 20 buildings. 'llhe present building plans inelude tht- Nl.W. Welsh :Xdministration Building, an addition tothe student union building, a new dormitory, and the Byron ll. luewis llistorieal Collet-tions Library. At the present time, the student body inc-ludes more than 1500 regular day students and an additional 400 evening and speeial students. :ln important development has been the expansion ol the Career Division providing edueation for young people entering busi- ness and industry after one or two years in eollege. 'llhe Career Division at Vineennes llniversity now enrolls some 4036 ofthe student body and ineludes more than twenty programs. New programs for 1966-67 in the Career Division are projeeted in the fields of lit-ans:-ti praetieal nursing, eommereial pilot training, and maehine trades. linder Dr. lleelces' guidanee, lfull-Yu 'llelevision has been developed to provide 4-ommunity antenna television serviee for Yineennes and Washington, lndiana, and l,awrc-neeville and Bridgeport, lllinois. The proc-eeds of this servive is to be used to underwrite edueational television for the station Vl'V'l'l,', a lieense for which has been ret-ently granted by the Federal Com- munieations Commission. ln 1964, 'lihe Valley .-Xdvanee, a weekly newspaper, was established under the auspic-es of I inf-ennes lfniversitv to serve the greater Yin:-ennes lfniversity, and as a basis for the teaching of journalism at Yineennes llniversity. The Yalley :Xdvanee now has a eireulation of almost 7,000 weekly. ln l965.the lfniversity assumed the operation of the O'Yeal Airport toisupport the establishment ol its airplane meehanies technology program whieh is aeeredited by the Federal .Xviation .-Xgeney. ln the spring ol 1958, Yineennes lniversity was admitted to membership in the North Central -lssoeiation of Sec-onrlary Sehools and Colleges. Dr. lieelces at the present time serves on the Commission on Colleges for the Assoeiation as a eonsul- tant and an examiner. lle is also a member ofthe Sub-Committee on Community and junior College lfrlueation of the Commission on Researeh and Serviee for the North Central Assoeiation. He is past president of tht- liner-nnes Y.'Nl.C.A. and a member of the Board of Directors. it the present time, he is 4-hairman ofthe eommittee on tourism ofthe Chamber of Commeree and has served as a member of the Doard ofllirt-etors for the Chamber. Dean Hill is chairman of the Academic Af- fairs Committee and chairman of the Humanities Division of the University. He is also responsible for the coordi- nation of student class schedules and the operation of the final examination schedules. DEAN PRESTON BAILEY ALBRIGHT, Dean of Men, Guidance and Placement Director and Professor of Eng- lish. Responsible for the discipline of male students and in charge of Men's Residence Halls. Supervises all test- ing programs, counseling and orientation programs. Dean Albright supervises allocation of scholarship, loan and worlc study funds and is faculty sponsor for the Student Senate. He is also responsible for the administration of automobile registration and traffic. DEAN CORNELIA CARTER, Dean of Women and Director of Student Activities. Dean Carter is an Associate Pro- fessor of Education and English and is faculty advisor to both the Student Senate and Alpha Theta Chi, women's social sorority. She supervises the operation of the stu- dent health office and clears all campus activities. She is responsible for campus art exhibits and processes at- tendance records. The weekly and daily activities bulle- tins are distributed from Dean Carter's office and she is also the unofficial University interior decorator and selects the appointments and furnishings for dorms and lounges. Wm 455-57 DEAN STEPHEN A. VIOLANTE, Dean of Admissions and Assistant to the President of the University. He is an Associate Professor of Business, advisor to veterans and the President's representative to the Student Union.
