STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTATIVE ALPHA THETA CHI PLEDGE With a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye, she was the true picture of youth and life. She won a place in the hearts of those who knew her by her bubbling personality and personal worth. To those who were close to her she was like a rainbow after a storm. Her life though short, was a life she filled to overflowing and though she is now gone, our lives are indeed better that she passed our way. Illustrated in these pages are the buildings in which the University has been housed during its history in Vincennes and are highlighted by the members of the current staff who keep the machinery running smoothly. This primitive log structure was the home of jefferson Acad- emy from its organization in 1801, until it was absorbed by Vincennes University in 1811. The academy is said to have stood on the south edge of the present campus, near the Har- rison Mansion, and to have con- tained two small classrooms. It was constructed of native cy- press logs set on end, after the method used by the pioneer French inhabitants. It was torn down soon after the Civil War. 's wk Behind the administrative structure is a comptentstaff of directors and assistants who have accepted the re- sponsibility for attending to many of the complexities of VU Life that have too often been takenfor granted. ln 1807 the Trustees of the University purchased for 3200 the tract of land which is now bounded by Fifth, Perry, Sixth, and Hart Streets in Vincennes for use as a college campus. During the same year con- struction was started on a commodious two and a half story brick building, but it was not ready for occupan- cy until l8ll. It was here in 1837 that Vincennes Uni- versity established the first medical school in Indiana. In 1839 the University be- came embarrassed withdebt and was obligated to sell its property, which was pur- chased by the Bishop of Vincennes and used a Catholic college, and or- phange and by St. Rose Academy. Ray Baker, Managing Editor, T-fig Valley Advance Organized close to the campus are several enterprises including The Valley Advance, news- weekly, Community Antenna Tele- vision, which provides extended television reception to the sur- rounding areas and the VU Print Shop. After selling its property and paying its debts in 1839, the University had a small amount of money left and, in 1840, it purchased a new site at the northwest corner of Fifth and Busseron Streets for S500. Meanwhile, the State Legislature had established a rival institution at Vincennes, to be known as the Knox County Seminary, but the County officials did not have enough money to provide it with a building. The Trustees of the Vincennes University thereupon sold the newly acquired lot to the County and loaned it sufficient money to complete a building, taking a mortgage for security. The Seminary Building was completed in 1850 and in 1853 the University foreclosed its mortgage and took over the property. Thus, after fourteen troublesome years, Vincennes University again had a modest home of its own. This was used until 1878 when it was removed to make way for a new building. The picture in the Vincennes University collection is the only one of this building known to be in existence. It was painted by William Green jr. C1860-19555, who, as a young man, attended school there. Mr. Green's paintings are regarded as fine examples of primitive art. So, in 1856, the Trustees purchased the lot diagonally across the street for S600. By the expendi- ture of the additional sum of S1700 a modest frame building was erected. Known as the 'Female Department', it was used until 1870, when it was abandoned for school purposes.. The library staff, Mrs. Lynette Weizel, Humphrey Olsen, Mrs. Elizabeth Pitkin, Mrs. Martha Wray and Mrs. Grace Olsen Larry Stains, Curator of the Historical Collection HUMPHREY OLSEN, HEAD LIBRARIAN 3 ln 1878 the University contracted for a new three story brick building on the site it owned at the corner of Fifth and Busseron Qts. When finished it was - garded as one of the finest college buildings in the State. For the first time since the sale of its cam- pus in 1839, the University was adequately housed. ln 1880 an addition was built at the rear of this building. Subsequently, the old Cim- bel home at Fifth and Broadway Streets was pur- chased and later an aban- doned CivilianC onservation Corps building was acquired and rebuilt on this site. Elks Country Club Howard Tichenor, 1965 Hen Johnson Dennis Coyle The 1965 Cross Country team of Vincennes University is well on the way to the best season of its brief his- tory. This year's team is the third to be fielded. The team of 1963 tied 1 and lost 3. The 1964 team won 4, lost 2, and placed 10th in the NJCAA National meet. To date this year, the Blazers have won 8 and lost 2. Returning from last year's team are four lettermen. These are captain of this year's team and top point getter from last year's squad, Dennis Kirchner of Washington, Ray Oppel of Corydon, Paul Robertson of Corydon, and Ken Snider of Decker, Indiana. Several freshmen have added needed depth to the team. Freshman Dennis Coyle of Fayettesville, Howard Tichener of Vincennes, Sam Cross of Hammond and Gary Ramsey of Odon have consistently placed in front ofthe pack in runs this year. Coyle has won all but one of the races this year and fortunately for Vincennes University was beaten by team member Howard Tichenor in his only loss. That win was a good one for Howard as he set a new record of 18:52 for the Vincennes University 3V2 mile course at the Elks Country Club. Dennis Kirchner had held the record of 18:59 until this time. Other frosh doing a fine job are Steve Pressler of Indianapolis, Gary Hall of Vincennes Don Scott of Indianapolis, and john Perry of Indianapolis, ,, NW, fy, ,Aiwa I -Rlzrgifw A My tyffligizqp MJ? Under the strain of rowth and the burden of the war, the decline of Vincennes University was rapici As a result of the de- creasing enrollment Vincennes -Alpha Chapter lost her life. On about October lst, 1964 after much hard work by Mr. ,lames Hills and a few in- terested students, Mr. Hills lNational-Secretary of the fraternityi announced that a Corenthian Club was to be started. Finally, on Feb. 26, 1965, after sitting idle for over half a century, sixteen V.U. students were formally initiated into the ranks of Sigma Pi. At this point the Fraternity's mother cha ter was officially reactivatedg making Vincennes University the ONLY junior coflege in the United States to have an active National Fraternity on its campus. The objects of the fraternity are: To establish a brotherhood of and for, college meng to promote scholarship and literary cultureg to advance the cause of ed- ucation, to raise the standards -- of morality among men to diffuse culture and encourage chilvalry. Drive and collection, various fraternity sponsored dances, lincluding the annual street dancelg artici ation in all campus events fhomecoming etc.i, and the annual Orchid Flpall andj other interfraternity activities. ln September of 1965 the fraternity acquired a chapter house which is now under the process of remodeling by the members' and pledges.
