A Comm Published by the Student Body of VINCENNES UNIVERSITY Vincennes, Indiana Volume 14 KARYN DONNA GRACELY, Editor - in - Chief unity F Jani | li 01887 | I VINCENNES UNIVERSITY FOUNDED 1801 Out of a Rich Heritage... When William Henry Harrison arrived in Vincennes to become the first governor of the Indiana Territory, he discovered ‘that the inhabitants of the country...have long experienced the inconvenience arising from the total want of an institution for the education of youth.’ His answer was the establishment of a two room log cabin school named Jefferson Academy in 1801. The trustees of this little frontier school applied to the federal government for a land grant. Congress approved the grant in 1804 and two years later 23,040 acres of land, in what is now Gibson County, Indiana, was assigned for the support of the school. The pioneer institution became Vincennes University on November 27, 1806, and was officially incorporated by the first General Assembly of the Indiana Territory meeting in the old Territorial Capitol in Vincennes. Governor William Henry Harrison was elected president of the Board. Vincennes University was established as the center of education on the frontier -- the first college to be established west of the Alleghenies and north of the Ohio River, the symbol of the intent of the people of the new nation that ‘religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and happiness of mankind schools and means of education shall forever be encouraged.’ oe ee G aA ane PP aT a a LE REVOIR TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION SENIORS FRESHMAN FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF ACTIVITIES Honoraries Organizations Publications Music Drama ATHLETICS Students in Residence (Dormitory) a’ bientot for 1903-04 PREFACE... As time goes by and one finds himself far along on some distant future way of life, he may turn, glance back, and then and then only, can he truly evaluate these events that are the present. We are no excep- tion. We are nearsighted. But we have tried to project ourselves — to give you this 1964 Le Revoir (formerly known as the Re Voo)a true picture of the year — a picture of what some day will be memories, some of the best memories of your life... Even now as you turn these pages for the first time, you find memories, and even now these memories are mellowing and the circumstances that created them are changing. This is as it should be. A University should be the symbol of change and progress... As we celebrate the 164th anniversary of the founding of Vincennes University and the tenth year on the present campus, we are aware that vast changes are taking place in all aspects of the campus. And yet, there is something unchanging about the University. Through all this pattern of change and counter-change there is woven the steel thread of tradition, without which there would be no pattern —no lasting pattern. And so, let us say it has been a year with more than its changes... but a year that saw the rebirth of the old traditions. Remember the tenth anniversary convocation in the grove near the Ad- ministration Building at the exact location where President Beckes held the first convocation on the present campus... The new spirit and the old together... memories... let that stand for the Vincennes University for the year of ’64. — . DEDICATION To you, the members of the Vincennes University faculty, who moved with the University from the old school to the new campus ten years ago-- we dedicate our 1964 Le Revoir Spirit of the Anniversary of the University Ten years ago Vincennes University made its historic move to the new Harrison Park campus. Left behind were inadequate and deteriorating facilities, but not some 75 years of tradition and devoted at- tachment to the old campus. The decade which has ensued has seen the new campus expand, the program of the University grow in its breadth and usefulness, and new traditions established which will be revered in the years to come. The story of Vincennes University’s growth onits new campus is a thrilling story, one which includes the leadership of a splendid Board of Trustees, and of an able, devoted faculty. It includes the loyalty and generosity of literally hundreds of alumni and friends whose financial contributions and many other types of assistance have made the growth possible. It also includes the story of a growing and worthy student body whose capacity and scholarship have brought them to places of leadership all over the na- tion. The past ten years will always be remembered as the period for the building of the new Vincennes University. And he said: No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. The astronomer may speak to you of his under- standing of space, but he cannot give you his understanding. The musician may sing to you of the rhythm which is in all space, but he cannot give you the ear which arrests the rhythm nor the voice that echoes it. And he who is versed in the science of numbers can tell of the regions of weight and measure, but he cannot conduct your thither. For the vision of one man lends not its wings to another man. And even as each one of you stands alone in God’s knowledge, so must each one of you be alone in his knowledge of God and in his un derstanding of the earth. As the house lights dimmed after the season's last performance, the audience bespoke their praise of a job well done by their enthusiastic applause. The Mitchell -Ruff Trio The Friendship Garden On Sunday, September 1, 1963, the two handsome Japanese laterns Yukimitono, the short, squat one, and Kasugatoro, the tall, slender one, were placed in the ''Friendship Garden ' and dedicated. The lanterns were gifts to Vincennes University from the students of Kochi University in Japan. The lanterns are symbols of wisdom and affection and highly respected. These two lanterns are made from volcanic stone and carved by famous Japanese craftsmen. Since the lanterns weighed about 2000 pounds, Judge Shake contacted the U.S. Navy for assistance in delivering them to San Francisco. They arrived May 27, and were taken to Evans- ville by the local Rotary Club where they were picked up by a local trucker and brought to the university campus. Five students from Waseda University, Japan, participated in the ceremony together with Susumu Nakagawa, Minister of the Embassy of Japan, Washington, D.C. He was the personal representative of His Excellency, Ryuji Takuski, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States from Japan. The five boys were on a cross-country hike and when contacted were delighted and honored to participate in the dedication ceremonies. An honor system was established whereby the men will control the hours and the demerits to be handed out on weekends has so far proven highly successful. The dormitory has also made several contributions in the fields of intramural sports, by winning the intramural football championship and by sponsoring other events around campus. By living at the dorm the men and women have struck up close friendships with one anotherand have had the unique experience of living in a co-educational residence hall. The horizons of man’s perception have expanded greatly in this century. It is the responsibility of the Univer- sity to facilitate this growth in know- ledge and stimulate a sense or moral and ethical responsibility in those with whom the knowledge is shared. The University of Vincennes is dedicated to this concept of function. In this pursuit of excellence, the University must work within three phases of time: it takes from the past; gives to the present; and plans for the future. _ gy eeosat aie ... SEN LOA Also as the yearbook goes topress, CATV is coming to Vincennes and Washington, with plans for possible expansion to Lawrenceville and Bridgeport, Illinois. Why is Vincennes University inter- ested in this project can best be answered as follows: A friend of the University gave V.U. the equipment formerly used at channel 52 UHF stationin Princeton, Ind. The University’s interest in providing television service is bas- ically educational. However, educa- tional television must be financially underwritten. The University’s TV consultants from Washington, D.C. have taken the position that the greater Univer- sity area would benefit greatly from CATV service, and that with the CATV system furnishing income an educational station could be main- tained on the air to serve the area, What educational goals does V.U. hope to attain through educational service over channel! 52? (a) To develop educational TV pro- grams at the elementary, secondary and college levels. (b) To take better advantage of educa- tional TY programs being developed outside the community. (c) To develop training programs for TV engineers, technicians, program personnel and sales personnel, a service seriously needed in the Mid- west. Such programs would greatly widen the educational opportunity for young people in the V.U. area in a rapidly growing field. These dramatic photographs show some of the installation of the 523 foot tower that will be used to bring eight different TV channels to the CATV subscribers. eens Se, CHALLENGING FUTURE. URBAN RENEWAL As the yearbook goes to press, it is apparent from advance enrollment figures that V.U. will have a greatly increased student body in the fall. The University now finds that it must expand its facilities, either through Urban Renewal program or through other means. These aeriel views show how impossible it is for the school to expand any way but north--the Wabash River is bordering the campus on the west; the Balti- more and Ohio Railroad hem in the campus from the south as well as east, so north is the only possible answer to the present question of expansion. Dr. Beckes, and the Board of Trustees, feel that with the present increased enrollment in all schools, expecially junior colleges, that Vincennes University will surpass 1000 students by 1970. We sincerely hope that the yearbook of 1965 will show a new and enlarged campus. A campus serving the educational needs of an ever-increasing student body. CA ae yee Dat
