THE ORIVE WAY TANDS! Ls = pi The past two years under the energetic leadership of Dr. Isaac K. Beckes saw rapid strides at Vincennes University. The new Curtis G. Shake Library was dedicated in December, 1960, giving the University its first building devoted exclusively to library facilities. The largest addition to the new campus since it was occupied in 1953 was made when the Univer- Sity acquired the old Hack and Simon property, adjoining the previous holdings. Equipment for Vincennes University’s own television station was obtained and plans were pushed forward to put V.U. on the air. Plans for the University’s first dormitory were under development and Robert E. Green announced that he would build a new physical education building on the site of the present athletic field. On the academic side, the first class graduated from the Department of Nursing in the summer of 1960 and the members took their places in the profession. The spring of 1961 saw the first graduates from the new Department of Technology. |t was an- other two years of solid progress at V.U. Vincennes University’s Circle K Club, following its motto of ‘We Build’ by promoting service projects for the school and the community, provided an active program of activities for men on the campus during the past school year. Led by Herb Elliott, the president, Circle K gave both money and time whenever a need arose, whether it be for V.U. or the city. The club aided citizens of the community the Muscular Dystrophy drive last fall, taking time out from the Thanksgiving vacation to complete the drive, and in the spring, joined with other V.U. organizations to aid the Multiple Sclerosis drive. Also, the club contributed to the Y.M.C.A. annual membership canvass. Its sponsoring group, the Kiwanis club of Vincennes, heard Herb El- liott tell of Circle K’s projects at a program this spring. On campus, Circle K along with Alpha Theta Chi co-sponsored one of the most popular social events of the year, the ‘Oblivion Blast? As a final contribution, Circle K awarded at the Honor’s Day convo a $100. scholarship to Don Sheley, who will be a second year student next fall. The awarding of the scholarship is an annual project of the club. Football games, initiation, and the international convention gave the club rewards for its duties. Circle K joined Gamma Tau in giving the campus a very ‘informal’ presentation of rag-tag football last fall. Initiation for new members proved amusing both for members and non- members alike. And this summer, several V.U. members will head toward St. Petersburg, Fla., for the convention and ‘fun in the sun? Other campus activities of the club included sponsorship of the V.U. Sweetheart for 1961, Miss Sue Ellen Joyce, and assistance for the annual Book Fair held this spring. Besides Elliott, Officers were: Steve Tolbert, vice-president; Chuck Low, treasurer; and Paul Borden, secretary. Terry Allen took over trea- surer’s duties the second semester when Low transferred to another school. The 1960-61 membership of Circle K met the standards set by the club in past year’s, and the returning members are capable of surpassing these marks already attained. Student Christian Association SCA has been an active club this year through the leadership of their President Kinga Spelman. This club is a group of students from different church denominations. The highlights of this years activities were years activities were a hayride, caroling and a Fellowship Dinner. Standing, left to right: Coach Allen Bradfield, Bill Cullop, Ron Cooper, Bill Keneipp, Bill McCoy, Buddy Graham, Norman Starks, Don Funneman, and student man- ager Bob Mitchell. 1960-61 Basketball Vincennes University’s Trailblazers bounced back from a so-so 11 won, 9 lost record in 1959-60 to rack up 21 victories against 9 defeats in the past season. Joining the Kentuckiana Junior College Conference for the first year, the Blazers led the circuit for several weeks only to stumble to second place. Buddy Graham of Odon, Ind., a freshman, led all scorers with 596 points in 29 of the 30 games played. Graham was ably given scoring assists from Ron Cooper, a Robin- son, Ill., graduate, and Ron Russell, a Lincoln high school product. The squad that finished the season had but two second year players, Bill Keneipp and Andy Gainer. Besides Graham, Cooper, and Russell, Don Funneman, Ed Hardiek, Brayton Simmons, and Bill McCoy all were seeing their first action for V.U. Honors were in order at the close of the season. Graham was unanimously selected by coaches for the All-KJCC team, and Simmons and Starks received honorable mention. Gra- ham also was picked for the all-tourney team, and Coach Bradfield placed third in voting for ‘‘Coach of the Year.’ Close, but not close enough, described Vincennes University’s performance in the Region XII JC tournament at Flint, Mich. last week. After drubbing Bay City, 97-75, on March 2. the Blazers were edged by Grand Rapids, Michigan, 86-84, on a last second bucket. It marked the third straight year that the Blazers had been eliminated by three or less points. Last year it was a one-point loss, and the year before a three-point overtime defeat. 78 BUDDY GRAHAM = 64 66 59 84 73 80 82 74 89 74 86 82 117 63 80 97 86 67 95 85 BILL McCOY aA 48 74 62 81 97 84 RON COOPER V.U.
