Ever since Dr. Isaac K. Beckes arrived at Vincennes University as president in 1950, he has led a relentless community effort to convert the wide open spaces of the city’s former Harrison Pairk into a modern campus ... First came financial campaigns to make the move to the new campus possible ... Then came the construction of the administration building and the conversion of Army structures from George Field into the library-science building ... This was followed in rapid succession by the development of the city’s old waterworks building into the beautiful and useful Robert E. Green Auditorium ... Another George Field building was then transformed into the attractive Florence Hall, housing the home economics department and nursing classroom ... Next came the new Student Union Building, giving the University for the first time in its history adequate student facilities ... And now, Dr. Beckes checks plans for a new library building, the latest project in V.U.’s battle for space ... More space to serve more students ... That’s the Vincennes University story since 1950. ...

The year 1959 found the world rapidly catching up with the fabulous Buck Rogers ... For the first time, the “man on the street” talked about space ships to Mars and trips to the moon without his sanity being doubted ... The question was not so much whether outer space would be conquered, but which nation would conquer it first .... As the world entered the Space Age, Vincennes University was also battling space problems ... The expanding University had to find space for the increased numbers of students seeking admission ... The school found itself in demand as never before in its long and honorable history ... Problems of growth and expansion loomed ever larger as enrollment records continued to be set. ... To meet the problems of shrinking space, the University opened the new student union building, named for President Isaac K. Beckes at the request of the Alumni Association ... This fine new structure in the heart of the campus gave V.U. plenty of space for recreation, dining and lounging ... The old coffee shop space was converted into a classroom for engineering drawing ... And finally, plans were pushed for starting work on a new library ... Completion of this building will release space occupied by the present library for much - needed science labs. . As V.U. graduated its first Space Age class, it found itself in the midst of space problems of its own. ...
