New buildings ... Challenges Space ! More students ... New programs of study ... That’s the V.U. story as the old school moves toward the close of a decade of progress — the bustling 1950’s. ... The year 1959 found the world rapidly catching up with the fabulous Buck Rogers ... For the first time, the “man on the street” talked about space ships to Mars and trips to the moon without his sanity being doubted ... The question was not so much whether outer space would be conquered, but which nation would conquer it first .... As the world entered the Space Age, Vincennes University was also battling space problems ... The expanding University had to find space for the increased numbers of students seeking admission ... The school found itself in demand as never before in its long and honorable history ... Problems of growth and expansion loomed ever larger as enrollment records continued to be set. ... To meet the problems of shrinking space, the University opened the new student union building, named for President Isaac K. Beckes at the request of the Alumni Association ... This fine new structure in the heart of the campus gave V.U. plenty of space for recreation, dining and lounging ... The old coffee shop space was converted into a classroom for engineering drawing ... And finally, plans were pushed for starting work on a new library ... Completion of this building will release space occupied by the present library for much - needed science labs. . As V.U. graduated its first Space Age class, it found itself in the midst of space problems of its own. ... Ever since Dr. Isaac K. Beckes arrived at Vincennes University as president in 1950, he has led a relentless community effort to convert the wide open spaces of the city’s former Harrison Pairk into a modern campus ... First came financial campaigns to make the move to the new campus possible ... Then came the construction of the administration building and the conversion of Army structures from George Field into the library-science building ... This was followed in rapid succession by the development of the city’s old waterworks building into the beautiful and useful Robert E. Green Auditorium ... Another George Field building was then transformed into the attractive Florence Hall, housing the home economics department and nursing classroom ... Next came the new Student Union Building, giving the University for the first time in its history adequate student facilities ... And now, Dr. Beckes checks plans for a new library building, the latest project in V.U.’s battle for space ... More space to serve more students ... That’s the Vincennes University story since 1950. ... Seated, left to right: Robert Bierhaus, Max Strashun, Joseph V. Riley, President Isaac K. Beckes, Secretary of the Board Florence G. Watts, Estelle Emison, Administrative Secretary Edith May, Busi- ness Manager Doris Albrecht, President of the Board Curtis G. Shake. No mere “letterhead” group, the Board of Trustees takes active leadership in formulating the policies that guide Vincennes University through its “space Space o: Age age” problems ... Where to find room for the ever- increasing student body ... How to equip the classrooms @ Strategists and laboratories to serve the students better ... These are some of the hurdles the board must leap as Vincennes University moves confidentiy ahead. ... FACULTY... For its major fall production, the Vincennes University Playhouse, under the direction of Miss Amy G. The Playhouse’s spring production was one of the most ambitious undertaken by the group in recent years. The presentation of George Bernard Shaw’s “Androcles and the Lion” was a great success as the cast handled the Shavian lines with assurance. The first-century Rome set was outstanding. Members of the Playhouse continued to take part in productions of the Vincennes University Children’s Theater, founded by Miss Loomis for youngsters in the community. This is the beginning date of Jefferson Academy — a direct forerunner of Vincennes University. The new date re- places 1806 on the University seal, which is the year that the school’s charter was signed. Research by President of the Board Curtis G. Shake established without a doubt the direct connection between Jefferson Academy and Vincennes University, and that the University grew out of the earlier Academy. The official history of the start of Vincennes University now reads — “Founded 1801 as Jefferson Academy, chartered as Vincennes University in 1806.” It seems like only yesterday that we lined up for books on a hot September day to start the new school year ... And now the year is gone ... What will next year bring? ... A trip to Mars? ... A rocket to the moon? ... Man will continue to have his space problems, and V.U. will continue to challenge space, too, as the old school makes ready for even larger numbers of sons and daughters. ...
