Student Senate The Student Senate is the official student governing body of Vincennes University. The primary purpose is to promote democracy as it deals with the problems that arise throughout the year; to aid in the planning of the administration’s policy, social activities, and student affairs; and finally to give the students an actual working experience in | self government. The Seniors of the Senate are elected by their respective clubs in the spring of the previous year to form the “working Senate” during summer months. In the fall each club and organization elects one Freshman to serve as representative. Each organization, class, or club has an equal vote. The Dean of Students and the President of Vincennes University act as non-voting advisors to the Senate. | The meetings are open for observation by the faculty and students at any time. The | Senate has been greatly strengthened this year by the formation of a new constitutioned policy as well as by the great success of several never before attempted projects. Vincennes University Ensemble The Vincennes University Ensemble has bee n kept busy this year appearing at numerous clubs, schools, and social functions. They have spent an hour every day working together besides the time spent in individual study and preparation. Their fine per- formances are evidence of their hard work. Vincennes University Choir The Choir is made up of students who like to sing well enough to give up their noon hour. The Choir, along with the Home Economics Club, sponsors the Traditional Christmas Carol Party, which this year was ‘‘a coffee.’ The entire student body gathered in the halls on the morning before vacation began to listen to Joy Kimmell at the Organ and sing with Mrs. McKee and the Choir their favorite carols. The Home Economics girls at the Tea Table kept the hot coffee and delicious sweet rolls plentifully supplied. Crailblazer Staff The 1956-57 TRAILBLAZER, whose staff is com- posed of those enrolled in journalism and students desiring newspaper work as an extra-curricular activ- ity, was published every two weeks, the student body receiving sixteen editions and an extra, a two-page April Fool’s publication. This year, under the leader- ship of Advisor, W. Bede Mitchell, Professor of English; Editor-in-Chief, Fred Walker, Jr.; Assistant Editor, Harry L. Degenhart; Business and Advertising Manager, Tom Witherspoon; and Assistant Business Manager, Jerry McGaughey; two four-page papers, ten six-page papers, an eight-page paper, two ten- page papers, and a twelve-page paper were published. Among many other advances made by this year’s campus paper, one outstanding feature was the com- plete coverage of the V.U. sports under the guidance of Sports Editor, George Byers, Jr., and the newly- ae Second Year Nurses created Trail Blazer Sports Department. It was early in the year when the TRAIL- BLAZER Staff moved to new and more convenient and modern quarters, upstairs in the building that formerly housed the University Coffee Shop. Throughout the year, the paper sponsored a number of contests, most noteworthy of which were the an- nual Cherry Blossom Queen Contest, a mock nation- al and state election, and a contest to name the build- ings of the Vincennes University campus. Perhaps the highlight of the year was the preparation and publication of the Founders Day Edition, in con- junction with the celebration and observance of the University’s 150th year. It was a twelve-page paper featuring all phases of V.U. history and accounts of all the happenings of the nine-day susquicentennial celebration. %: Revoo Staff A day which is looked forward to with much anticipation each year by all students is the day when the University’s annual, the REVOO, is distributed. Mrs. Mary Hall McKee is our faculty advisor and the editor this year is Sandra Hedrick. The work for the REVOO is done purely on a voluntary basis, and the students work at their assigned jobs in their spare time. Much hard work and preparation to bring forth the yearly publication is necessary in order to bring you a condensed record of the events of the school year, This year it was decided to center the yearbook around the University’s 150th anniversary. In honor of this celebration, the staff thought it appropriate to have the seal of the University on its cover. The colors of the school, blue and gold, are also carried out in the cover. Because of the limited space, much of the Sesquicentennial celebration has had to be omitted. Group pictures of the many clubs and organizations, individual pictures, pictures of the many events of the busy campus life, and pictures of the queens _ selected by the student body have been assembled for you so that your college year will not fade from memory. This year’s staff consists of: Editor-in-Chief, Sandra Hedrick; layout, Mary Dellinger and Cynthia Horn; activities, Dick Overton and Harold Hawkins: sports, Susie Williams and Jim Cannon; feature, Marilyn Schaefer, Linda Grider, and Kay Miller; art photography, Phil Jackson; professional photogra- phy, Gates’ Studio; typists, Wally Herring and Donna Robinson; student senate representatives, Patty O'Neill and Carolyn Pepmeier; and faculty advisor, Mrs. Mary Hall McKee. The purposes of the club are to promote teamwork and friendship, to develop leader- ship and to encourage creative arts and activities. The Home Economics Club directs its efforts toward any problems of the University related to Home Economics. In co- Operation with the V.U. Choir it sponsors the Traditional Christmas Carol sing. Members of the club take several field trips during the year including a trip to the Indianapolis Home Show. Reynolds, Editor of the Junior College Journal, was princi- pal speaker, and the Anniversary Lunch- eon at which the Honorable William Henry Harrison III spoke. The festivities came to an end with the Sesquicentennial Dinner at which Mr. John Clinton Emison, of New York, Vice President and Treasurer of American Smelting and Refining Company, was the principal speaker. Fifty-year graduates were honored at this dinner at which the Hon- orable Curtis G. Shake presided. The announcement of the gift of the Wharf Estate was made and the campaign to raise money for the Library was launched. “Cwelfth Night” V. U. Playhouse Sesquicentennial Production Shakespeare’s rollicking ‘“Twelfth Night” was the First V.U. .Playhouse production in the Sesquicentennial season. A cast and crew composed largely of Freshmen contributed a colorful and popular presentation of the classic comedy. Activitles V.U. Playhouse is part of the community of Vin- cennes, as the above pictures indicate. Scenes from Benet’s A CHILD IS BORN illustrate the traditional Christmas gift-production to the city. Members of the Playhouse took significant leadership in scenes honoring Founder's Day in December. Other members participated in one-act plays taken to clubs and churches in the com- munity. V.U. Playhouse sponsored the sale of Ethel Preston’s colorful college scene, “Between Classes,” as a 1956 Christmas card. Some major gifts toward the expansion of Vincennes University featured this Anniversary year. Among them were the beautiful Estate shown above and some 160 acres of farm land given in memory of Mr. Eugene C. Wharf; the completion of the Auditorium with acoustical ceiling and wood-paneling on the walls by Mr. Robert E. Green; the Public Address system furnished and | installed by the Cannon Electric Company; and the first major cash gift of $10,000 toward the construction of the New Library presented by the Blackford Glass Company. One of the most rewarding convocations every year is our Foreign Students’ Convocation. This year we played host to a group of students from Indiana State Teachers College and Evans- ville College. Vincennes University is fortunate to have three foreign students of its own: Sookhi Yang, Houng-zin Peck, and Byung Chang, all from Seoul, Korea. Many other fine experiences have been en- joyed by our students through our convocations and also. our Community Series programs for which every student is provided a ticket. Among the outstanding offerings this year have been: The Indiana University’s Marching Hundred, The United States Marine Band, the Singing Boys of Norway, Players Incorporated presenting Shakespeare’s ““HENRY IV” and the modern comic classic. ‘“CHARLEY’S AUNT,” Indiana University’s Opera Work- shop, Illinois University Percussion Ensemble, The Mozart Festival, and Religious Emphasis Lectures by outstanding leaders in the three faiths; Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish. : : . 3 J . | Jan Crent Queen's Attendants LOU ANN MYRICK SHARON FRYER MARY JANE FIELD PATTY O’NEILL Basketball VINCEN Personalities Leon does it again! Second tow: Don Poston, Ron Hughes, Jim Heines, Noel Carie, Bob Showalter, Max Keller, Terry Downey, Don Perry. The 1956-57 Trail Blazers, under head coach, Allen Bradfield, this year compiled one of the best records in the history of Vincennes University—twenty-two sparkling wins and two surprise losses. One of those losses was to Oakland City, but was later avenged. The other was to Lincoln Bible Institute in the last regularly scheduled game at Lincoln, The Blazers had soundly beaten them earlier in the season. Playing home games at the Gibault Gym. and the Coliseum, the team rose to be ranked seventh in the nation in NJCAA ratings. On March 8, the varsity Blazers met the Alumni in an unprecedented post-season clash. The team entered the National Junior College Athletic Association regional tourney at Joliet, Illinois, March 12. Senior members of the Blazer powerhouse, Kenny Gray, Bob Showalter, Noel Carie, Jim Joyce, Don Perry, are leaving V.U. in a “blaze” of glory, following a season that provided more thrills and excitement than any other athletic feat in the University’s sports past. V.U. has much for which to look forward in the 1957-58 b’ball rounds. With players like Stan Bartholomai, Ron Hughes, Max Keller, Don Poston and Leon Haag, who performed so brilliantly in their appointed roles this year, Blazer boosters know that the “good times’’ have not yet been terminated.
