FCOTBALL Lawlencexllle klcked off and after both teams falled to galn the necessary yardage for a f1rst down the Ahces agaln took possesslon of the ball and from mldfleld lt took only four plays before H3FW1Ck plunged over from the 2 Lawrencewllle recelx ed the klckoff and punted on the thlrd down from the1r own 25 to the Allce 44 On the f1rst play halfback Dlck Inman romped 56 vards for the econd Allce score as the quarter ended Vlncennes scored for the thlrd tlme early 1n the second quarter when Hudson took a lateral from Cannon and galloped 26 yards unmolested to the goal l1ne Wlth but a few mlnutes re malnlng ln the f1rst half Schultz caught a blocked Indlan punt and raced 35 yards for another 6 polnts In the third quarter the offense of the Ahces was slowed down to almost a standstlll and as '1 result there was no scorlng unt1l the openlng mlnutes of the fmal perlod The Ahces galned control of the ball at mldfleld and galns by Hudson Harwlck and Gard brought the ball to the 2 where Harwlck drove over All f1V6 trles for the extra polnt were unsuccessful PRINCETON 31 0 Not even mud and ram could stop the Ahces ln the1r search for v1ctor1es as was shown at Prlnceton when the Green and Whlte emmerg ed very muddy and on the long end of a 31 0 score It dldnt take the Green Wase long to get under way as the f1rst tlme they got the1r hands on the ball after the Tlgels had punted I man on an off tackle smash splashed h1s way through 67 yards of mud and water for the 1n1t1al Allce score The ball then exchanged hands for the remalnder of the quarter Wlth the Allces ln DOSSQSSIOH on the Tlger 10 yard l1ne when the second quarter began Harwlck and Inman each made f1ve yards wlth the latter carrylng the ball into the end zone for hls ec ond touchdown of the eyenlng Nelther team threatened for the remalnder of the half and the Ahces were ln front 12 0 at the half way mark In the mlddle of the thlrd perlod the Allces chalked up another 6 polnts as Hudson went 23 yards to score Then Inman scored the extra polnt on an end run The last two Allce touchdowns were made ln the last perlod by halfback George Lanham one belng a 36 yard punt return the other resultlng from a 26 yard galn on an off tackle play Both trles for the extra poxnt falled CENTRAL BEARS 6 21 The Allces went down ln defeat for the f1rst tlme at the hands of the Central Bears who were rated as one of the best teams ln Indlana The f1nal score read Central 21 Vlncennes 6 In the f1rst quarter both teams played at a standstill and It was not unt1l the mlddle of the second quarter that Central flnally pushed across the1r f1rst touchdown when Worklng BV tk k k BASKETBALL and Carle scorlng the first quarter ended 11 5 IH the Ahces favor The second quarter saw the All es lncreaslng the1r lead on the scorlng of Burdsall Hoffman and Carle The half tlme score was 22 15 The thlrd quarter ended wlth the Allces stlll leadlng by a margln of 7 polnts the score belng 30 23 In the fmal per1od Vlncennes managed to Increase the1r lead even mole and the game ended wlth the Ahces on the very long end of a 25 17 score VINCENNES 17 JASPER 26 The Ahces suffered the1r fxrst hardwood de feat of the season from Jasper Dec 12 at the Collseum The Ahces took an early 7 0 lead OXEI the Wlldcats and the f1rst quarter score was 111 Vlncennes favor 8 4 However the second quarter saw Jasper overtake the Ahces margln to lead the remam der of the contest VINCENNES 25 CENTRAL 42 The Ahces recelved the1r second consecutne loss of the season from the fast movlng Central Bears at the Collseum on Dec 14 The f1rst quarter featured a scorlng race whxch ended wlth the Bears leadlng 10 9 The second quarter was much l1ke the f1rst and the bears were st1ll ahead at half tlme 22 9 The Ahces began loslng ground 1n the thlrd quarter only being able to tally three polnts The fmal perlod saw the Ahces much outscored as the Bears went on to the1r 42 25 vlctory VINCENNES 33 BICKNELL 29 The Allces remalned 1n the w1n column Dec 19 when they defeated Blcknell 33 29 at the Collseum The f1rst three quarters featured the Allces out corlng the Bulldogs but the fourth perlod saw Blcknell glvmg the Ahces a scare The fmal perlod started Wtlh the Ahces 1n tee lead by 9 p0lUtS However a Bulldog h1t tlng spree closed the margln to 4 polnts The lead went to SIX when Burdsall tallled a flelder but returned to 4 when Fowler h1t for Blcknell The game ended w1th the Allces four polnts ln the lead 33 29 VINCENNES 31 BEDFORD 23 The Ahces tallled another vlctory when they defeated the Bedford Stonecutters Dec 21 at the Coll eum The score was t1ed once 1n each of the f1rst two quarters The Allces overcame the one polnt lead of the Stonecutters at the end of the f1rst perlod and took the lead three p01DtS at half tlme In the thlrd and fourth perlods the AllC6S began pulllng away from the Stonemen untll It was evldent that Bedford could not posslbly w1n There was no scorlng 1n the fmal two mlnutes and the game ended Opponents 0 0 16 26 September 14 Bosse September 21 30 Lawrencevllle 0 September 28 Prmceton October 5 Central October 1 Llnton October 1 Washlngton October 2 New Albany November 2 Sulllvan November 9 Blcknell STATISTICS The year 1945 was marked w1t'h another successful football season When the flnal gun had been flred ln the last game of the year at Blcknell s Hooper Fleld the Green and Whlte of old Vmcennes had e tabllshed a season re cord of 6 v1ctor1es 2 defeats and one scoreless te They had scored 41 touchdowns and 13 extra polnts for a total of 259 polnts Wh1Ch IS far beyond any other scormg mark ln the school s glorlous grldxron hlstory This rugged offense was backed by an even greater defense whlch allowed the Allce goal llne to be crossed only 5 tlmes The great work of the Alxce l1ne was shown tlme and tlme agaln and ln one game when the flgures were tabulated the opposlng team was 5 yards ln the hole The average score was almost 29 polnts per game for Vmcennes to only 4 for thelr opponents The only weak polnt that could be seen 1n any phase of the Green and Whlte attack was the 1nab1l1ty to add the lmportant extra polnt In the Lln ton game the failure to k1ck the extra polnt cost the Al1ces the ball game and a chance for th S I A C tltle The Vmcennes football Y Schultz on the th1rd strlng of the All State Football Team BOSSE 0 0 The openlng game of the 1945 grld season saw the Al1ces and Bosse Bulldogs battle at a stand stlll ln a scoreless game at Enlow Fleld IU Evansvllle Vmcennes started off on the rlght foot by cl1ck1ng off two successlve flrst downs before fumbllng with the Bulldogs recoverlng on thelr own 35 Then Bosse made the longest sustam ed drlve of the evenlng before flnally bemg stopped on the AIICG 1 yard stripe From there on nelther team could get 1ts of fenslve attack underway and except on one or two dlfferent occaslons the ball exchanged hands near mldfleld The Al1ces mam scormg threat was halted wlth a pass lnterceptlon on the Bosse 3 yard l1ne as the f1rst half ended Pass lntercept ons were predomlnent ln the second half as both teams took to the alr o try to break the scoreless deadlock LAWRENCEVILLE 30 0 The Al1ces galned thelr flrst vlctory at the expense of the Lawrencevllle Indians 1n thelr openlng game at Washmgton Fleld by a 30 0 trlumph November November 23 November December December December December December January 4 January 5 January 1 January 1 January Janualy February 1 February 8 February 12 February 15 Lawrencevllle R61tZ Washlngton Jasper Central Blcknell Bedford New Albany Jasper Jeffersonvllle Central Prlnceton Washlngton Sulllvan Huntlngburg Bloomlngton Lawrencevllle Bosse VINCENNES 26 LAWRENCEVILLE 24 The Allce hardwood squad won then' open mg game of the 45 46 season by scormg a close two polnt vlctory over the Lawrencevllle Ind lans 26 24 At the end of each quarter the Al1ces were ln the lead but only by sllght marglns After holdmg a 3 2 edge the Green and Whlte In creased thelr lead to 11 8 at the half In the thlrd perlod the Indxans closed the gap to only one polnt wlth the score belng 18 17 In the flnal quarter the Al1ces outscored the Indlans 8 to 7 to end up on the long end of the 26 24 score VINCENNES 25 REITZ 17 The Al1ces racked up the1r second vlctory of the season and flrst S I A C w1n when they defeated Reltz of Evansvllle 25 17 at Evans ulle Nov 23 The game opened wlth a fleld goal by Grubb follow ed by three flelders for the Panthers and one free throw for each team mak1ng the flrst quartel score 7 3 1n favor of Reltz Tre Al1ces pulled out m front of the Panth ers the second quarter by OLltSCOI'lI1g the R91tZ qumtet SIX polnts The halftlme score was 11 9 The thlrd quarter featured Hoffman Hud son and Grubb h1tt1ng from the floor and put tmg the Al1ces fulther ln the lead the score at the end of the perlod belng 19 12 In the flnal perlod Harwlck and Lasher tal hed three pomts each to make the Al1ces flnal 25 polnts agalnst the Panthers 17 VINCENNES 44 WASHINGTON 29 The Al1ces played on thelr own hardwood for the flrst tlme thls season and tallled their thlrd wx ln Nov 30 when they nset and tromped the W shlngton Hatchets 44 29 The game opened NVItI'l the Hatchets scormg from the floor Burdsall tallled a free throw and a fleld goal to ox ercome Washlngton s only lead durlng the contest Wlth Lasher Bowman Ig raceev xqeo 31 ' 0 30 44 ' 6 21 12 17 2 6 ' 7 14 25 9 65 ' ' 0 19 33 ' 4 32 7 21 31 25 ' 0 28 37 64 ' 0 35 46 ' 1 46 . FCQTBALL BASKETBALL Went over from the 1 yard lme on fourth down It was durmg th1S quarter that the Allces suf fered a heartbreaklng setback when a 50 yard touchdown run by Hudson was nul1f1ed by a penalty The second half saw the Bears score thelr second and thlrd touchdowns ln qulck order w1th one late ln the thlrd quarter and the other a few plays after the beglnnmg of the flnal quarter Workmg scored h1s second touchdown from the two yard llne to end a 50 yard dr1ve Whlle Watson went over from the fxve yard str1pe for the thlrd and flnal Lentral tally Mathls p1Ck8d all three 01 the extra pomts 'rom placement The lone score for the Allces followed after Lentral had completed thelr scorlng The Bears klcked off and Cannon gained 10 yards to the 28 Hudson then tossed a pass to Rlch ardvllle to the 50 After Harwlck plcked up 20 yards Hudson faded back and threw a pass to Schultz who went over to glve the Allces thexr 6 pomts The try for the extra polnt was wlde LINTON 6 7 The Ahces met Wlth thelr second defeat of the year when the lnvadmg Llnton Mlner who went through the season undefeated journeyed home v1ctor1ous by the close score of 7 6 The game was hard fought from the very beglnnlng The Allces recelved the klckoff and belng unable to get rolllng were forced to punt Then Llnton had to punt as they were stopped cold by the Allce llnemen Thls ex change of punts contlnued for the greater part of the fxrst half It was not untll the last few mlnutes that the Green and Whlte got started mOVlHg GHIHS by Cannon and Harwlck and a pass from Hudson to Rlchardvllle brought the ball from the VIHCCHHCS 37 to the Linton 25 From there Inman went to the 14 and Hudson covered the flnal 14 on a reverse Just 18 ec onds before the half Bowmans place kick was Wlde Llnton s score came mldway ln the thlrd perlod when one of Harwlck s passes was lnter cepted on the Vlncennes 33 A galn of 6 yards put the ball on the 27 and from there Peterson of Llnton Went through a large hole ln the llne and evaded the secondary to score Keller placed klcked the extra pomt The last quarter was scoreless w1th Llnton controllxng the ball the last 6 mlnutes of the game The Allces were decxdely off ln the second half maklng only one flrst down as compared to 8 1n the flrst half WA' HINGTON 65 0 Playmg thelr la t game before a home crowd the Allces handled the Washlngton Hatchets wlth ease wlnnlng 65 0 The Ahces left no doubt as to tl1e outcome of the game when they took the opemng k1ck off and marched 70 yards ln 14 plays to pay curt wlth Bowman tallylng from the 1 The VINCENNES 37 NEW ALBANY 34 The Allces took tlme out from thelr Chrlstmas vacatlon to add another vlctory to thelr collec tlon by defeatlng the New Albany Bulldogs 37 34 ln a close evenly matched contest The game was a thrlller from the xery start wlth the score bemg tled slx dlffe ent umes Nelther team held the lead by a comfortable margln at any txme the largest dlfference belng 5 pomts The count was even at the close of the flrst perlod 10 10 Then the Allces surged lnto the lead ln the second perlod and held a 17 13 advantage at the half The Bulldogs not to be counted out yet outscored the Green and Whlte by f1V8 pomts to start off the flnal perlod Wlth a 1 polnt lead As the fourth quarter began tl'e Allces qulckly added 6 markers to give them thelr blggest lead of the evenlng 32 27 whlch was too much for the Bulldogs to overcome VINCENNES 3o JASPER 44 The AllC88 traveled to Jasper Jan 4 to suf fer thelr thlrd defeat of the season and second defeat from the Wlldcats The game started w1th the Allces playlng a m tn to man defense Wtxh Jasper leadlng 18 5 at the end of the flrst period the Allces chang ed thelr tactlcs by playlng a stlff zone defense the 1ema1nder of the game The Allces outscored the Wlldcats the last three perlods but not enough The game ended wlth Jasper leadlng 44 35 The Allces racked up another w1n when they handed the Jeffersonvllle Red Devlls a 46 35 defeat Jan 5 at the Collseum At the time the Red Devlls were rated among the flrst ten teams ln the state accordlng to the A P poll The Ahces took an early lead ln the game Wlth the score at the end of the flrst quarter 17 8 Phe second quarter saw Vlncennes Wld enlng the lead margln ex en more the half tlme score belng 28 15 The Allces got a scare ln the last of the final quarter Wrth four mlnutes of play remalmng the Red Devlls came Wlthln slx pomts of catch mg up wlth the Green and Whlte wave How ever Pete Lasher and Hoss Foncannon each fllpped 1n a fleld goal to clnch the game for Vlncennes and complete the Allces 46 polnts agalnst Jeff s 35 VINCPNNES 46 CENTRAL 49 The Allces rece1ved thelr fourth defeat of the season flom Central Jan 11 at Ewansvllle ln a ox ertlme contest The
