HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 46 In September of 1942 329 freshmen entered the forbodlng corrldors of Llncoln Hlgh Some few expert pathflnders and the 9 A s had l1ttle trouble fmdlng the rxght rooms but often some of us became lost and barged lnto the wrong rooms only to retreat hastlly wlth reddened faces Entermg Lmcoln Hlgh w1th us came three new teachers MISS Estella Deem Mlss Betty Ann Small and Mr Harry Smlth During our flrst semester ln Lmcoln Hlgh the physlcal educatlon program was broadened under the dlrectlon of Mr Vernon McKown The boys were requlred to take flVC days of gym and the glrls three days of gym On the flrst anniversary of Pearl Harbor Mr De Loss Walker a noted Journallst who had traveled extensxvely ln Japan addressed a con vocatlon Our return to school after the Chrlstmas va catlon was saddened by the death of Lt Colonel W L Elkenberry former supermtendent of schools Mr Ralph Banks former Jumor Hlgh School prmcxpal was appomted as the new supermtendent of schools Hls appolntment been actlng supermtendent of schools and pr1n clpal of Llncoln Hlgh We freshmen were glven a boost durlng track season when Jlm Gard turned out to be qulte a good mller Mary Jean McCormc1k recelved the freshman award This year was later termed the hardest year of the war There was much reJo1c1ng when school was dlsmxssed for summer vacation We returned ln September of 1943 no longer freshles but sophomores somewhat perturb ed by the adjectlve sllly whxch was attached to It Miss Parks hlstory teacher reslgned She was replaced by Mrs Phllllps We were proud of our football team upon their bemg awarded the S 1 A C champlonshlp The Teen Age Canteen project was under way although the program was slow At the end of thls year we were sorry to hear three teachers were leavlng us They were Mr Hohn MISS Sparks and Mr McKown Clara Stangle recelved the Sophomore Honor Society Award The Allled almleb mvaded North Afrlca S1c1ly Italy and flnally German held France Belgium and Holland We returned to school ln 1944 Jumors We captured some of the dlgnlty of the senlors ln now becomlng upper classmen Thls year we elected class offlcers Thejaalls Little troke fell gre t o k II THE crass snsr ar 3-sf s I4 fs X J' were astlr wlth campaxgnang students The re sults were Jim Gard Pres1dent Myron Lasher VICE Pres1dent Dlck Godare Treasurer and Patty Buchanan Secretary The football team had a successful season wlth 5 wms 2 losses and 2 tres Mr Ph1ll1ps was appomted IH S A A Com mlssloner of Athletlcs Mr Snyder then Prln clpal of Jumor Hlgh became Pr1nc1pal of Sen1o1 Hlgh and Mr Rlce was appomted Prmclpal of Jumor Hlgh and Mxss Carrle Van Wey became Chemlstry teacher IH Llncoln Hlgh of 1945 In thls year the war ln Europe was won Dur mg the summer vacatlon the war 1n the Pac1f1c was Won maklng our return to school a ome what happler event Thls year we were senlors at last We elected class offlcers agaln The results were Harry Rlser Pres1dent Bill Knauth VICE Pres1dent Davld Helnz Treasurer and Beverly Watson Secretary Mr Alwood came to Llncoln from V U to teach chemlstory and mathematlcs In December a flu epldemlc h1t school pretty hard A llttle better than a thlrd of the stu dents were absent The epldemlc was severe but not enough so as to force school to close The basketball team got off to a good tart thIS year And now as the close of school draws near the Joy of gettmg out of school IS somewhat saddened because we reallze that never agaln can we return as students But we feel that we have left our Alma Mater ln good hands Please take good care of her for us THINKING BACK When years have passed and tlme s gone by Wlll you remember Llncoln Hlgh Wlth IIS many Joys and forgotten friends The The Ihe The The end of the war the atomic bomb?
