THE EXILE Literary A CHANCE AT HAPPINESS One sunny day Angle walked along the beach It was a very beautlful day wlth the wlnd blowlng the seagulls ln the dlstance wheellng lazlly about on the llght breeze and the waves vsashlng up agalnst the shore When Angle was llvlng ln New York she was very weak and lll so her parents bought a beautlful cot tage by the beach Here she could galn back her strength and Vltallty She loved the beach ln all 1tS splendor Angle was a lonely glrl She Wlshed very much she could have a pet of her very oven to F3189 and care for She lay down on the sand thlnklng about lt and fell asleep When she avsoke the sun was golng down and sornethlng was rubblng her cheek She Jumped up and found a babv seal lylng there sunnlng 1tS8lf It was verv helpless havlng Just been born Angle gave a cry of dellght and p1Ck ed the baby up It snuggled up agalnst her neck and crled softly How would one? she asked It seemed to have understood her for It flapped ItS fllp pers and Cfled softlv Later that nlght Father came ln and told Angle she could keep Fllppo lf she reallv wanted to and Fllppo seemed contented The summer months vsere verv happy for Angle She and her pet play ed on the beach ln the sunshlne and ln the water Soon Angle would have to go home because she had to go to school She trled to make Fllppo understand and to get hlm to Walt untll she came back next summer So she departed leavlng Fllppo behlnd Wlnter came and went and the fam llx began plannlng thelr vacatlon at the seashore Alrangements were made and thex were soon on thelr wav Angle thought about Fllppo all the tlme and couldnt walt to see her old frlend After thev arrlved she went run nlng down the beach looklng for Fllppo but he was no where ln Slght A week went by but no Fllppo Angle was very worrled The next day as she and her mother were hanglng out clothes she hap pened to ook across the bav and savl a verv small black object swlmmlng toward shore Fllppo' She ran down and hollered to hlm After he landed she plcked hlm up but he seemed verv llfeless Angle nursed hlm for days but he dled havlng first sur prlsed them all by glwlng blrth to a llttel of baby seals' It was a sad yet happv dav for Angle She had lost her old frlend but she had galned three new ones whlch IS rather strange slnce seals seldom have more than one pup Nancy Adams 59 The darkness began to fade And the sun as lf awakenlng from a dream Sent rlbbons of llght over hlll and vale The moutaln tops gllstened wlth the beauty of the new morn And flnallv the last star faded lnto noth lngness Halold Lee Andelson 56 'VIY WALK As I walk Wlth ease under the tl ees And llsten to the Wlnd howl by I llft mv head and see the sun It ulll be there tlll I dle Phan I walked to the lake And save the water clear POI lack of watel Im sure That vu haxe llttlc feal I walked f0l a long tlme beneath the moon That shone on the streets so brlght I walked to my home IH the blg spruce tree And to the ealth I bld Goodnlght Vvalter White 58 I6 T .1 , . n 1 o v . , L - 9 - - ' . y . . . . .
