Do we realize what lt offers? Do we know ltS hlstory On the mornlng of April twenty first 1894 the school bu1ld1ng where our present high school now stands was totally destroyed by fire It was belleved to be of an lncendlary or1g1n thousand dollars with an actual cost of five thousand five hundred and mnetv two dollars to build the present Lincoln School This bulldlng was completed for the beginning of the winter term of 1894 1895 Our school IS rated as a class A school because it fulfills the follow 1ng requirements of which I shall mentlon the most lmportant ones There must be an approved four year course of studv of standard grade Our school meets these re qulrements by offering a college pre paratorv course which lncludes the requlred courses of foreign languages mathematlcs and sciences to meet college requirements as wx ell as a gen eral course All teachers 1n class A schools must hold Maine certificates of secondary grade for the subject field 1n whlch they teach Our teachers hold degrees from a Varlty of colleges Mr John son IS a graduate of Bowdoln Mrs Ross IS a graduate of the Unlverslty THE EXILE 5 of Maine Mr Tlbb1tS from Sprmg field College Mr Berndtson from Bridgeport Unxverslty and Mr S1 mons holds a masters degree from Boston Unlversltv The laboratory must be reasonably equlpped to permit laboratory prac tice There must be provision for dou ble perlods for practice 1n chemlstry and other s1m1lar subjects and an an nual expendlture of not less than seventy five dollars WhlCh may be re duced when the laboratory becomes better equlpped Our laboratory meets these standards There must be a library w1th suit able tables bookcases dlctlonarles reference books fictlon and non fic t1on books There IS also a requlred annual expendlture for the llbrary of not less than seventv five dollars Maps and charts are necessary We have approximately seven hundred books now ln our school library The school must be reasonably up to date and meet requlrements for heating hghtlng vent1lat1on and fluorescent lights installed through out the whole bulldlng Plans are be ing made for new fire escapes to be completed th1S sprlng In add1t1on to these basic require ments It offers a complete muslc pro gram We have a High School Band with twentv three members and a chorus which has had a few public appearances Wlth the band Our athletlc aCt1V1tl9S have pro gressed greatly during the last few years Now we have lnterscholastlc basketball as well as baseball Our baseball team IS st1ll keeping up the record of the champlonshlp teams of the past Last vear It came through with the Knox title We are looking forward to another victorious vear Perhaps the most lmportant part of our school which we should encour age appreclate and cherish IS the school sp1r1t We feel confident that our VH S Sp1r1t IS comparable to that IH anv other school 1n the state Sophomore Edltor , , u ' . 5 n . . , . - , u Q l . Most of us rarely thmk of ou1 llbrary but vye yyould mlss lt lf vye didn t have It Our llbrary was bu lt ln 1906 as the glft of Andrevy Carnxgle The pro moters were T J Lyons C E Bo man T E Llbby L W Smlth and A U Patterson The archltects were Clough Wardner W H Glover Co The exterior of our hbrary IS very attractive It may be consldered a memorial to the granlte lndustry as It 18 the onlv public building in town made flom granlte It IS all Vlnal hayen granlte except the two col umns which are made of Jonesport granite Our llbrary has an attractive ln terlor as vyell It IS clean and well llghted Hoyv many of us are faml l1a1 wlth lts plctures and statuary'7 There IS a bust of Longfellow one of Lincoln and one of Wagner the muslclan There IS a plcture of The Ploneer Vlnalhavens first steam boat whlch was bu1lt ln 1868 There are plctures of Llncoln Washlngton Longfellow and one of the GAR Post of Vmalhaven IH 1901 One yyhlch IS lnterestlng to all Vmalhaven natlves IS that of the Cathedral of St John the DIVIHQ w1th the famous eight columns of Vlnalhay en granite Three old town reports have been framed and hung on the wall ou1 llbrary at the present tlme In the non fictlonal sect1on there are some fine new ones The World Book of Encleopedlas The R6V1Sed Edl tion of the Holy Blble and The Greatest Story Ever Told Our l1b rarv subscrlbes to fourteen maga zlnes In addltlon to these The Na tlonal Parent s Magazine The Na tions Buslness and Llfe are glfts There are bound Town Reports from 1816 to the present date These can not be taken from the llbrary but are available to whoever wlshes to use them there They are very lnterestmg to read There are many books on his tory travel blography etc which make excellent readlng Our llbrary receives many books and money as glftS Last year alone three hundred 8lXtV books yyere re CGIX ed Various organizations gave money for equlpment needed such as tables chalrs etc The memorlal shelf contalns books g1y en ln memory v O I ' v I l , I O - ny ' - 7 , . . , . , , I Q . . . . . . . .
