MAINE S TEACHING PROBLEM Malne has many serlous educatlon al problems but the largest and most perplexing is the shortage of teach ers especlally elementary school teachers Maine would have a desper ate teacher shortage anyway but the nation wide shortage only aggravates Maine s sltuatlon more Connecticut and Massachusetts al so have an acute shortage of teachers but thev can pay hlgher salaries which naturally attracts many of our Malne teachers there Average teachers salaries as estl mated bv the N E A Research D1v1 sion shows that rlght now Mame has one of the lowest pay scales ln the United States which IS S2451 To pay Mame teachers the average for the country would only cost two cents a day per capita more which would not be too much lf It would solve Malne s teaching problem Everv year many students enroll in Teachers Colleges and Normal Schools but there always IS a big loss between the freshman vear and grad uatlon for manv reasons malnly marrlage Joining the armed forces working in other fields and lack of It has been shown that at the rate the number of chlldren are lncreaslng and at the rate we are loslng teachers 750 elementary school teachers will be needed next fall Of course It will cost a lot of monev but the teacher shortage can not be licked unless every town pavs reasonable salaries onlv then will Malne s educatlon make progress The Vouth of a country IS its most important defense and better pax w1ll bring better teachers to conduct bet ter schools and produce better men and women for the future Junior Editor NROTC Manx boys would llke to continue their educatlon after hlgh school but thei are unable to meet the financlal requlrements of college Boss with THE EXILE this amb1t1on usually have the men tallty to pass college boards and scho larshlps are offered to assist them In 1926 the United States Navy of fered high school graduates a plan called the Naval Officers Tralnmg Corps Units were established 1n fifty two of the leading colleges and umver s1t1es such as Harvard Yale Brown Dartmouth Cornell etc This plan offers a boy free tu1t1on plus a monthly expendlture amount provided that a certaln period of his time be devoted to naval tralnmg that he remain single and that he agree to accept a commlssion for which he IS on call for eight years and serves three years actlve duty This is for students who are subject to ln ductlon Regular N R O T C students are requlred two vears of actlve duty and receive a commlsslon for a total of slx years Also a student IS obllged to make three summer cruises of SIX to eight weeks each Twenty four hours must also be included in naval training each semester Some of the physlcal requlrements of the plan are twenty twenty v1s1on no chromcal 1nfect1ons and no mental deficiencies Students must first pass ply for the Naxv College Aptitude Test These tests are s1m1lar to col lege board tests and are glven 1n the December of the precedlng vear of entrv After completing the test the student waits untll the Selectlon Com mlttee lnforms him whether he has been selected or not Each state has 1tS own Selection Committee conslst mg of three members The student IS reaov for hls college appllcatlon providing that he passes both physlcal and mental examlna tions The student must at this time lndlcate the N R O T C college or um versltv he IS w1ll1ng to attend He should now request application papers from the college of his first choice On the application he must lndlcate that he IS an N R OT C student If how ever the student does not pass the re qulrements of the college to which he submlts his appllcatlon he cannot be enrolled in the N R O T C The college 5 , . . . 1 n n - . , - ! THE EXILE Editorials SCHOOL SPIRIT In thls past Near at Vmalhaven Hlgh School there have been many changes not the least of whlch has been a reawakenlng of prlde ln our school and a deslre to lmprove It Thls attltude 19 commonly called school Splrlt and although It has reallv come about through the whole heart ed effort of the student bodv The students who partlclpate ln athletlcs are a great credlt to the school 1n that they fight hard to w1n and are alwavs good sports no mat ter what happens In partlclpatlng 1n lnterscholastlc athletlc contests they have won manv new frlends for V H S as well as for themselves Most of the students who arent connected wlth athletlcs are elther 1n the band or have taken part 1n the H1 Jlnks wh1ch ln ltself IS a splen dld example of what a gloup of stu dents workmg together and working can alwavs be counted on to provlde some wonderful entertalnment at a Frldav afternoon assembly elther slngmg or plavlng an lnstrument and also have performed for groups out slde of school such as the Parent Teachers Assoclatlon School Splrlt 1snt however some thmg that should be kept ln mothballs and brought out only for baseball or basketball games etc It should be present durlng school hours as well A casual v1s1tor at Vmalhaven Hlgh School would see that this sp1r1t 1s present ln the young men and women here as thex go about thelr work and would go awax assuled that thex mll succeed ln the future EKIIIOI' ln Chlef A FRIEND INDEED Last fall Mr Hamllton Hall of Camden who lncldentally publlshes our Exlle 1nv1ted the Senlor Class to go to the UHlV8TSlty of Mame 1n order that we mlght become xnterest ed ln our state unlverslty he had tlckets for a football game 1n the afternoon whlch made the tr1p doubly appeallng L1v1ng on an lsland the puplls of Vmalhaven Hlgh School do not have the opportunlty to appre clate our State of Mame and the h1gh er educatlon that lt offers Only three members of the class had ever vlslted a college campus Cltlzens of Camden met us at the boat wharf IH Rockland and drove us to Orono After we arrxved at the Unlverslty we were shown around the campus Thls lmpressed us very much We were fortunate to VlS1t the bookstore and the new llbrary The football game Unlversltv of Mame versus UHlV6FSltV of New Hampshlre was extremely excltmg slnce It was the first football game that most of us had attended There were mam students from other schools and smce It was also Fresh man s Parents Day there was a large crowd to the game We were all thr1ll ed when the Unlversltv of Mame won over the Unlversltv of New Hamp shxre After the game we went back to Camden for a dehghtful week end wlth Mr and Mrs Hall We V1S1t8d manv lnterestmg spots of our state Whlle we were there Some of v s cllmbed 'VIount Battle and others took a car and went to Fort Knox and Bar Harbor We certalnlx appreclate thls oppor tumtx whlch 'VIr and Mrs Hall made posslble for us and we are grateful for thelr graclous hospltalltv Senlor ECIIIZOI' n Y Q .
