It dldnt seem p0SS1bl6 that thls could happen at a Coast Guard Base Jlm cast lt aslde wlth a nod and stepped up hls pace for the hght must be l1t The raln was l1ke a cold knlfe cuttmg at h1s legs and back as though lt wanted hlm to hurry faster He left the beach and started Cllmb mg up toward the tower The w1nd blew harder the hlgher he cllmbed The stones were wet and sllppery and twlce he almost fell but he managed to catch hlmself on the edge of some out cropplng rocks He stopped for a breath then started onward to the crest of the polnt Th re 1n a few moments he felt sure he would soon rlght the trouble and have the llght blazlng for The Southern Belle He reached the tower out of breath llmplng from a scrape on hls knee As he rested to catch h1s breath he glanced out over the ra1n sw ept bax hls ex e caught a dlm hght headlng up the outer harbor toward the polnt He stood there watchlng when iinallv he came to hls senses and reallzed lt must be The Southern Belle Jump mg to h1S feet he started up the Sl1D perw ladder leadlng to the beacon He must get that llght blazlng or there surelx vs ould be a sh1pwreck and he J1m Bowland a man wlth a perfect record would be to blame The wlnd blew colder and the raln spattered around hlm as he began to work on the llght He plcked up a screw drlver to unscrew the glass but It was corroded He tapped It wlth a hammer to loosen It so he could un screw It As he dlsmantled the lamp the Shlp was drawlng closer 1ts llghts glowlng through the sheets of ram J lm worked even faster but couldnt find a thlng wrong wlth It Was h1s heart poundlng or was the thunder he heard the roll of the surf on the plnnacles below?
