Skoog C Conway 0 0 A ' ' 7 . 7 . . ,fr THE EXILE Editorials SCHOOL SPIRIT In thls past Near at Vmalhaven Hlgh School there have been many changes not the least of whlch has been a reawakenlng of prlde ln our school and a deslre to lmprove It Thls attltude 19 commonly called school Splrlt and although It has reallv come about through the whole heart ed effort of the student bodv The students who partlclpate ln athletlcs are a great credlt to the school 1n that they fight hard to w1n and are alwavs good sports no mat ter what happens In partlclpatlng 1n lnterscholastlc athletlc contests they have won manv new frlends for V H S as well as for themselves Most of the students who arent connected wlth athletlcs are elther 1n the band or have taken part 1n the H1 Jlnks wh1ch ln ltself IS a splen dld example of what a gloup of stu dents workmg together and working can alwavs be counted on to provlde some wonderful entertalnment at a Frldav afternoon assembly elther slngmg or plavlng an lnstrument and also have performed for groups out slde of school such as the Parent Teachers Assoclatlon School Splrlt 1snt however some thmg that should be kept ln mothballs and brought out only for baseball or basketball games etc It should be present durlng school hours as well A casual v1s1tor at Vmalhaven Hlgh School would see that this sp1r1t 1s present ln the young men and women here as thex go about thelr work and would go awax assuled that thex mll succeed ln the future EKIIIOI' ln Chlef A FRIEND INDEED Last fall Mr Hamllton Hall of Camden who lncldentally publlshes our Exlle 1nv1ted the Senlor Class to go to the UHlV8TSlty of Mame 1n order that we mlght become xnterest ed ln our state unlverslty he had tlckets for a football game 1n the afternoon whlch made the tr1p doubly appeallng L1v1ng on an lsland the puplls of Vmalhaven Hlgh School do not have the opportunlty to appre clate our State of Mame and the h1gh er educatlon that lt offers Only three members of the class had ever vlslted a college campus Cltlzens of Camden met us at the boat wharf IH Rockland and drove us to Orono After we arrxved at the Unlverslty we were shown around the campus Thls lmpressed us very much We were fortunate to VlS1t the bookstore and the new llbrary The football game Unlversltv of Mame versus UHlV6FSltV of New Hampshlre was extremely excltmg slnce It was the first football game that most of us had attended There were mam students from other schools and smce It was also Fresh man s Parents Day there was a large crowd to the game We were all thr1ll ed when the Unlversltv of Mame won over the Unlversltv of New Hamp shxre After the game we went back to Camden for a dehghtful week end wlth Mr and Mrs Hall We V1S1t8d manv lnterestmg spots of our state Whlle we were there Some of v s cllmbed 'VIount Battle and others took a car and went to Fort Knox and Bar Harbor We certalnlx appreclate thls oppor tumtx whlch 'VIr and Mrs Hall made posslble for us and we are grateful for thelr graclous hospltalltv Senlor ECIIIZOI' n Y Q . ' .I I -I I ., V I' n A s n MAINE S TEACHING PROBLEM Malne has many serlous educatlon al problems but the largest and most perplexing is the shortage of teach ers especlally elementary school teachers Maine would have a desper ate teacher shortage anyway but the nation wide shortage only aggravates Maine s sltuatlon more Connecticut and Massachusetts al so have an acute shortage of teachers but thev can pay hlgher salaries which naturally attracts many of our Malne teachers there Average teachers salaries as estl mated bv the N E A Research D1v1 sion shows that rlght now Mame has one of the lowest pay scales ln the United States which IS S2451 To pay Mame teachers the average for the country would only cost two cents a day per capita more which would not be too much lf It would solve Malne s teaching problem Everv year many students enroll in Teachers Colleges and Normal Schools but there always IS a big loss between the freshman vear and grad uatlon for manv reasons malnly marrlage Joining the armed forces working in other fields and lack of It has been shown that at the rate the number of chlldren are lncreaslng and at the rate we are loslng teachers 750 elementary school teachers will be needed next fall Of course It will cost a lot of monev but the teacher shortage can not be licked unless every town pavs reasonable salaries onlv then will Malne s educatlon make progress The Vouth of a country IS its most important defense and better pax w1ll bring better teachers to conduct bet ter schools and produce better men and women for the future Junior Editor NROTC Manx boys would llke to continue their educatlon after hlgh school but thei are unable to meet the financlal requlrements of college Boss with THE EXILE this amb1t1on usually have the men tallty to pass college boards and scho larshlps are offered to assist them In 1926 the United States Navy of fered high school graduates a plan called the Naval Officers Tralnmg Corps Units were established 1n fifty two of the leading colleges and umver s1t1es such as Harvard Yale Brown Dartmouth Cornell etc This plan offers a boy free tu1t1on plus a monthly expendlture amount provided that a certaln period of his time be devoted to naval tralnmg that he remain single and that he agree to accept a commlssion for which he IS on call for eight years and serves three years actlve duty This is for students who are subject to ln ductlon Regular N R O T C students are requlred two vears of actlve duty and receive a commlsslon for a total of slx years Also a student IS obllged to make three summer cruises of SIX to eight weeks each Twenty four hours must also be included in naval training each semester Some of the physlcal requlrements of the plan are twenty twenty v1s1on no chromcal 1nfect1ons and no mental deficiencies Students must first pass ply for the Naxv College Aptitude Test These tests are s1m1lar to col lege board tests and are glven 1n the December of the precedlng vear of entrv After completing the test the student waits untll the Selectlon Com mlttee lnforms him whether he has been selected or not Each state has 1tS own Selection Committee conslst mg of three members The student IS reaov for hls college appllcatlon providing that he passes both physlcal and mental examlna tions The student must at this time lndlcate the N R O T C college or um versltv he IS w1ll1ng to attend He should now request application papers from the college of his first choice On the application he must lndlcate that he IS an N R OT C student If how ever the student does not pass the re qulrements of the college to which he submlts his appllcatlon he cannot be enrolled in the N R O T C The college 5 , . . . 1 n n - . , - ! THE EXILE Lztcrar Scctlon DARKNESS AND DUTY The ram came down 1n long narrow ribbons as Petty Offlcer Jlm Bow land of the Unlted States Coast Guard hurrled along the W1HdSW6pt bleak deserted beach toward the broken llght on Plnnacle Poxnt As he hurrled along h1s raln coat slapplng at hls legs he wondered why the hght had gone out at such a cru c1al tlme The Southern Belle was expected sometlme that nlght wlth a preclous cargo of sllver bulhon Could It be the work of the crooked salvage crew that had been worklng down the coast? It dldnt seem p0SS1bl6 that thls could happen at a Coast Guard Base Jlm cast lt aslde wlth a nod and stepped up hls pace for the hght must be l1t The raln was l1ke a cold knlfe cuttmg at h1s legs and back as though lt wanted hlm to hurry faster He left the beach and started Cllmb mg up toward the tower The w1nd blew harder the hlgher he cllmbed The stones were wet and sllppery and twlce he almost fell but he managed to catch hlmself on the edge of some out cropplng rocks He stopped for a breath then started onward to the crest of the polnt Th re 1n a few moments he felt sure he would soon rlght the trouble and have the llght blazlng for The Southern Belle He reached the tower out of breath llmplng from a scrape on hls knee As he rested to catch h1s breath he glanced out over the ra1n sw ept bax hls ex e caught a dlm hght headlng up the outer harbor toward the polnt He stood there watchlng when iinallv he came to hls senses and reallzed lt must be The Southern Belle Jump mg to h1S feet he started up the Sl1D perw ladder leadlng to the beacon He must get that llght blazlng or there surelx vs ould be a sh1pwreck and he J1m Bowland a man wlth a perfect record would be to blame The wlnd blew colder and the raln spattered around hlm as he began to work on the llght He plcked up a screw drlver to unscrew the glass but It was corroded He tapped It wlth a hammer to loosen It so he could un screw It As he dlsmantled the lamp the Shlp was drawlng closer 1ts llghts glowlng through the sheets of ram J lm worked even faster but couldnt find a thlng wrong wlth It Was h1s heart poundlng or was the thunder he heard the roll of the surf on the plnnacles below? The captaln of The Southern Belle would know that somethlng was wrong He could not he ln the outer harbor because the sea was rolllng 1n l1ke a storm drlven demon whlch would wash anx Shlp on to the polnt What could he do wlth no llght to gulde hlm to the 1nner habor be yond the sea pounded pxnnaclesl Back on the polnt Jlm was work looked at the lamp the WlCk and the gas l1ne but lt was none of these Once he glanced up to look over the storm hurled bay What he saw made h1s heart S1Ck The Southern Belle was nearer the rocks Back to h1s work he went for men s l1ves depend ed on hlm Suddenly he stopped and reached 1nto hls pocket and came up w1th some water soaked matches He couldn t save the Shlp Wlth wet matches' J1m 6X3m1H8d the llght once mol then he yumped up and flew down the ladder to the ground He headed for a low bu1ld1ng whxch was the fuel shack standlng dark agalnst the sks l1ne He fumbled IH h1s pock ets for the kevs as he ran down the path Inslde the shack J1m needed no hght to turn on the secondarx gas tank 13 0 O . , . . . , . , - . . . l ! L Q ,, 7 7 ' I4 THE EXILE Outside the nlght was gloomy The ram wh1pped agalnst the tower on the point The ship was close to the dark shore and the waves screamed to take her for their own Suddenlv there was a flash and the llght was burning through the wlnd and rain The captam stralghtened his Shlp to the course Jim Bowland had done his duty V Valols Young 53 FEMININE STRATEGY The thought of what she must do rad been with her for days It had followed her 1n her waklng hours and had managed to permeate all her dreams It had been llke a sore spot on her skin constantly annoylng and rapidly growlng more painful Although she had planned her ar guments and had contemplated It from every angle she had known It would be a hazardous sltuation for she had dealt Wlth h1m before As she faced h1m she had found herself shaking w1th fright and uncertainty While he had listened to her h1s face had not betrayed the slightest bit of emotion Although she had made some attempt at humor at first he had not acknowledged lt and a she had gone on talking his expres sion had remalned unaltered her a few brlef questlons and the knowledge that he was at least slightly 1nte1ested ln what she was saving had spurred her on She had talked rapidly making nervous mo tions w1th her hands and all the tlme watching his face for some expres slon of vseakenlng Flnallv he had moved sllghtlx null mg hlmself up stralghter in his chair and she had knovsn that he was about to rex eal his decision She had stood waiting the moment of tense charg ed silence seeming more than she could bear Nou she lav quiet and peaceful under the vshlte coxellet Her face seen clearly in the shaft of moonllght whlch touched It was pale and serene and a small enigmatic smile touched the corners of her lips Yes she slept untroubled and hap pv because that very night she had achleved the lmposslble she had procured fifteen dollars from her father for a new dress Ann M Webster 53 ISI AND SEASONS It IS sprlng The lsland IS awaken ing the ice is meltmg around the shore and the water turns from a dull grey to a pale blue that reflects the sky The days are getting longer the fishermen go about their tasks w1th a new vigor after the winter storms The children take long walks through the woods smellmg the fresh salt breeze It IS summer The island IS bustling and busy with the summer trade boats skim to and fro over the blue waves ln the harbor The long warm dass and clear star filled nlghts are for picnics and beach parties people evervwhere are basking 1n the warm sun and swimmlng IH the refreshing waves that lap the shore It IS autumn The lsland IS ablaze with color the harvest moon smlles down on the st1ll dark waves The air IS getting a chill the frost IS creeping over the ground The clang of the school bell is heard the davs are get ting shorter It IS winter The lsland IS a mass of white the tall fir trees bend the1r heads ln the sharp wlnter wind The fishermen are at home mending the1r gear the water IS ICX and the storms are frequent The cheerx Christmas lights glow from house to house but outside the salt a1r beats the windows Judith Clavter 54 . h . i. . .J g I , ' ! u N y ' n 9 . g ' .
