THE EXILE CHANGES IN THE SCHOOL I came to thJs school three vears ago ln 1949 It was of course a blg change to come from a large clty school to a small school hke thxs I soon became adJusted to It however and found that a large school w1th 1ts shops llbrary muslc rooms art de partment and all offers less ln some respects than a small one for ex ample wlth smaller classes a teach er has more time for xndlvldual at tentlon Soon after I enrolled here thlngs began to change In the fall of 1949 we trled to have a basketball team but we lacked the f3Cll1tl9S of a bas ketball court The last of Januarv the Youth Center gave us the use of the Town Hall whlch xxe lmmedlately converted lnto a basketball court Then thmgs started rolllng We had a basketball team coached bv our prlnclpal and we dld verv well at the games wlth North Haven and the Alumnl In the school bulldlng some of the desks were replaced wlth new ones and the followlng summer the bx local pamters The next year new desks kept com xng ln unt1l every student had one An athletlc dlrector xx as added to the faculty and the basketball team de veloped We had a few games on the mainland and the team lmproved greatlv Thls year we haxe had a musxc dl rector on the faculty and he has done wonders ln creatlng a muslc depart ment The chorus and band have been a great source of enjox ment and be nefit to the school The concert that was glven by both groups showed xx hat a tremendous progress has been made ln muslc ln a short tlme Our new phy slcal d1rector who came thxs vear has ralsed the standards of our athletlcs Through h1s efforts we have played manx more teams on the malnland ln our basketball program and we have become a member of the Knox and Lmcoln Baseball League agaln The glrls have had a basketball team and a softball team and thev haxe had the same advantages as the boxs The currlculum has been en larged wlth new courses Navlga tlon Marine Sclence Problems of Democracy Home and Famxlv L1v1ng and General BUSINESS Yes I thmk we all w1ll agree that the changes whlch have been brought about haxe benefited us lmmensely Edxtor 1n Chlef THE ART OF POETRY The avearge man would laugh lf xou told hlm that he was lndebted to poetrv He would scorn at lt vet he uses poetry everv dav to make l1fe more lnterestlng to make llfe more anlmated and even to dramatlze events Poetry opens a world to ev erxone a world of Joy or sorrow clate It we l1ve w1th It to the utmost all 1tS Joxs and tears are ours In the distance xve vlslon the spume break mg the grey stones tall fir trees xx 1nd1ng roads bells nlghts and days of xvlnd and raln It IS the poet who creates the mu SIC wlthln our souls he polnts the xx ay Voltalre sald poetrv IS the mu SIC of the soul and above all of great souls The poet senses the sen tlments of the world and he knows w here the bltterness hes He dlscov ers the beautles of the world he un veils our ex es he lives wlth the world mght and dav He makes a tree fa mous as dld Longfelloxx Under the Spreadlng Chestnut Tree A r1ver IS dxscovered ln a poem In Burns poem Tam O Shanter xxe dlscover 4 o o ' 7 V . . 6 THE EXILE Dav MISS Rascoe showed and ex plamed the record of the bables weight helght feedlng and mocula tions The girls have found th1S course verv b9!'l6HCl3I and hope that lt w1ll be contlnued next year Junlor Edltor THERE IS MUSIC IN THE AIR Th1S vear at Vlnalhaven Hlgh School we are very proud and happy to be able to say that there IS muslc 1n the axr We are fortunate ln hav mg mstructlon of muslc under the dlrectlon of Mr Alan Slmmons At the begmnlng of the year he or gan17ed a chorus group D1v1d1ng that group mto Sopranos Altos Tenor and Bass he started w1th four part muslc but slnce there was qulte a man shortage ln the choral depart ment It has now been changed to three part muslc that IS Soprano Alto and Men' Thls chorus group meets tw ICE a week-once durlng school and once after school Thls group has learned to read parts ln muslc manv new songs and much about part smgmg and har monlzxng The chorus group has g1v en two recltals at the Umon Church and many more events are planned b fore the year IS over Mr Slmmons had also orgamzed a band w1th a large group of interested and enthusxastlc students taklng part The band was very fortunate 1n hav lng many of the lalger Instruments loaned to them by the former band of Vlnalhaven Wlthout the use of these mstruments our band would have been lmposslble thlS year The band got off to a verv crowded and no1sy start because all practlces were held at the school but now the band has the use of the Town Hall for practlces twlce a week and has made much better progress Not only has the band learned to play several songs together but also we have learned to read muslc and to keep tlme We are planmng to make our first appearance Memollal Day In my survey of the muslc at Vlnal haven Hxgh I must not forget our annual H1 Jlnx directed by Arthur Brown and I think It was even better thls year for we all have much more knowledge of music than ever before Muslc In The A1r at V H S has been a lot of fun and has made the school year much more lnterestlng and enjoy able' Sophomore Edltor ATHLETIC PROGRAM Our athletlc program has been re orgamzed and enlarged this year un der Mr Kennedy s supervlslon Th1s IS the first year that we have had organlzed basketball IH our school Mr Kennedv was coach for the boys team and Mrs Kennedv was the coach for the glrls team We have had many trlps to the malnland and seyeral teams haye VlS1ted us The boys were fortunate enough to have games wlth Bangor and Beals Basketball trlps have been very beneficial to the school because they have lncreased interest and team work and understandlng among the play ers We have met other bovs and glrls of our own age and we have ylslted many towns and schools We have been very fortunate to have the town hall for practlce durlng the wln ter A new heatlng sy stem has been installed whlch has made It much more satlsfactorv for practice and games Thls spring through the efforts of Mr Kennedy we are agaln ln the Knox Llncoln League Mr Hawkes has orgamzed a softball team and thls team has been admltted to the Knox Llncoln Softball League Inter est IH baseball and softball has ln creased now that we have a league ratlng Mr Kennedy has lntroduced a per manent Athletlc Award system fox boy s and girls participating ln sports The boys awards wxll be presented at the banquet ln May and the girls awards are to be plesented at the Vlother and Daught r Tea ' '- v v - nf. s s . . , .
