RIFLE Supervised by Coaches Charles and David Lyman, the varsity rifle team ended the season with a 6-0 record. Their undefeated season was especially welcome since it was the complete reverse of the previous year's record. The Hawks attributed their success to hard work. They practiced diligently all season and took third place in the state championship. The team will lose only one senior, Rick Pysar, who saved more than one win. Starting for the varsity team next year will be Willy Olesen, Dave Botti, Ray Becker, Brian Bielot, Wilbur Fomento, Kathleen Kiley, Steve Bystrek, Clayton Mountain, and Jason Congdon. 3 1. VARSITY BASKETB LL A Under the direction of Coach Harry Fargo, the varsity basketball team compiled a 5-l5 record. Despite the disappointing season, the Hawks made some great strides in developing a sound basketball program at Vinal. The team was very competitive with all opponents, taking many games to the final minutes of play before the outcome was decided. One example was the Portland game in which the Hawks were down for half the game before they came back in the fourth period. Then they went into overtime before losing to Portland by only one point for a final score of 61-62. The Hawks defeated Haddam- Killingworth twice with scores of 79-51 and 62-49. They also beat Cheney Tech 69-53. The games against Coventry and Bolton ended with identical scores of 55-53. Keith Perry scored a last-second shot to win the Bolton game. Keith Perry was chosen for the All-Conference Team because of his all-around great play. Brian Mc- Carthy and Walt Jackson also con- tributed greatly to the success of the team. .
