in UNIOR VARSITY SOCCER The junior varsity soccer team played under the direction of Coach Tony Milardo. Although the teamis record did not in- dicate a very successful season point-wise, the Hawks nevertheless displayed a lot of en- thusiasm for the game. They increased their knowledge of basic skills and acquired many pointers on the field which will help them in the future. Coach Milardo was very understanding with his team since most of his players were playing for the first year. The highlight of the season was the last game played against Wilson which the Hawks won 7-0. All in all, the Hawks had given a few good teams a run for on their money by the end of the season. 1 2 4 1. Cross Country 3 Guided by Coach Sal Scianna, the Hawks had an unexpected successful season with a 13-5 record. The team was literally blown away at the Durham Invita- tional by both Portland and Coginchaug by identical scores of 47-121. Vinal was almost shut out in its first season meet by state powerhouse Maloney High by a score of 15-48. However, the team never lost its character. Instead of giving up, they ran off a string of ll straight victories. The Hawks had the eventual C.O.C. champion, Portland, on the ropes, losing to them by only 2 points due to an injury to Vinal's third leading runner. The Hawks, who ended up second in the C.O.C., were contenders up to the last day and were 10th in the state sectionals. They had some outstanding individual perfor- mances. Andre Paradis was 16th at the state final, and Ben Chowaniec was second in the C.O.C. while Mike Moneypenny was 12th. Mike, a newcomer, was also the biggest surprise on the team, being the second leading runner most of the season. Greg Byrnie ran well despite injury, and Geoff English was 5th on the team and sec-ond in the C.O.C. among freshmen. Dan Lamoureux and Brian Zawilinski bat- tled for 6th and 7th spots. David White, Matt Gondek, and Jim Carmody rounded out the club. 4 Ben Chowaniec, Mike Moneypenny, and Andre Paradis patiently await the start of the C.O.C. championship meet.
