Tri-Captain Sal DiMauro, a dynamic stop- per back, was able to generate instant of- fense while making tough strikes. The speed and toughness of wing fullbacks Tom Uhlaman and Daryl Michaud neutralized their opponents' effectiveness. Anchoring the defense was keeper Dean Sienna. Frank Milardo's skill and savvy helped him play center half. Joe Etheridge and Mario Saraceno played the mid-field with steadfastness. The Hawks had offensive balance. Scott Schenarts was a fine one-on-one player who finessed his way past many defenders while compiling the most team assists. Tri-Captain Gino Moncada scored 17 goals, and Dan Hooper scored 13. Although the teamis record did not in- dicate a very successful season point-wise, the Hawks nevertheless displayed a lot of en- thusiasm for the game. They increased their knowledge of basic skills and acquired many pointers on the field which will help them in the future. Coach Milardo was very understanding with his team since most of his players were playing for the first year. The highlight of the season was the last game played against Wilson which the Hawks won 7-0. All in all, the Hawks had given a few good teams a run for on their money by the end of the season. 1 2 4 1. Cross Country 3 Guided by Coach Sal Scianna, the Hawks had an unexpected successful season with a 13-5 record. The team was literally blown away at the Durham Invita- tional by both Portland and Coginchaug by identical scores of 47-121. Vinal was almost shut out in its first season meet by state powerhouse Maloney High by a score of 15-48. However, the team never lost its character. Instead of giving up, they ran off a string of ll straight victories. The Hawks had the eventual C.O.C. champion, Portland, on the ropes, losing to them by only 2 points due to an injury to Vinal's third leading runner. The Hawks, who ended up second in the C.O.C., were contenders up to the last day and were 10th in the state sectionals. They had some outstanding individual perfor- mances. Andre Paradis was 16th at the state final, and Ben Chowaniec was second in the C.O.C. while Mike Moneypenny was 12th. Mike, a newcomer, was also the biggest surprise on the team, being the second leading runner most of the season. Greg Byrnie ran well despite injury, and Geoff English was 5th on the team and sec-ond in the C.O.C. among freshmen. Dan Lamoureux and Brian Zawilinski bat- tled for 6th and 7th spots. David White, Matt Gondek, and Jim Carmody rounded out the club. 4 Ben Chowaniec, Mike Moneypenny, and Andre Paradis patiently await the start of the C.O.C. championship meet. Their undefeated season was especially welcome since it was the complete reverse of the previous year's record. The Hawks attributed their success to hard work. They practiced diligently all season and took third place in the state championship. The team will lose only one senior, Rick Pysar, who saved more than one win. Starting for the varsity team next year will be Willy Olesen, Dave Botti, Ray Becker, Brian Bielot, Wilbur Fomento, Kathleen Kiley, Steve Bystrek, Clayton Mountain, and Jason Congdon. 3 1. Despite the disappointing season, the Hawks made some great strides in developing a sound basketball program at Vinal. The team was very competitive with all opponents, taking many games to the final minutes of play before the outcome was decided. One example was the Portland game in which the Hawks were down for half the game before they came back in the fourth period. Then they went into overtime before losing to Portland by only one point for a final score of 61-62. The Hawks defeated Haddam- Killingworth twice with scores of 79-51 and 62-49. They also beat Cheney Tech 69-53. The games against Coventry and Bolton ended with identical scores of 55-53. Keith Perry scored a last-second shot to win the Bolton game.
