Philadelphia; October 3-4, 1979 Amid the many domestic and international crises faced by the American people during this year, one event was so spectacularly positive that it will be remembered long after Iran and energy shortages are forgotten—that event was the coming of John Paul II. His visit to Philadelphia was a real dream come true for the more than one million people who gathered to greet and celebrate mass with the Pope. From the moment the first Polish Vicar stepped off the plane, he was treated to Philadelphia at its best, and in return Philadelphia was treated to humanity at its best. 19
