Ethicians, artists, politicians, novelists, professors, poets, logicians, theologians and taxi-cab drivers have all offered their individual philosophies on the acquisition, institution, and ultimate end of education. Education includes everything that exerts a forma- tive influence, and causes a young person to be, at a given point, what he is. Sewing on your first cub-scout badge, thumbing through the pages of the Bible, talk- ing with a train station derelict, observing a Fellini movie, or writing your final term paper at Villanova are all ascendancies of total education. One cannot deny the unpredictable and unlimited sources which blend intricately to create the educated man”, a man who realizes that dictionary definitions are merely black on white. 26

When the knife of serious thought whittles away the confusion of pre-exam cramming, Friday night beer-blasts, forgotten ten- minute depressions, transient likes and dislikes, clever dormitory pranks, disproportioned arguments, and catchy tunes of adver- tising pharaohs . . . the statue stands alone, among carefully chosen shavings. We ask ourselves the identity and purpose of the artist. It all seems clear in the perhaps morning when we wake up and under- stand that the artist never perpetuates a temporary expression. “What’s it all about Alfie — is it just for the moment we live ?”
