JOSEPH CONRAD What follows is our peculiar crystalization of the age-old fresco of human attitudes. We are talking about MOODS: those tendencies of temperament which most often honor and plague us. Let it be understood that all arc susceptible, and that from these arise our joy and sorrow, our enthusiasm and apathy. This is not a criticism, although occasional value judgments arc made. It is an overlapping por- trait designed to demonstrate that, in the long run and over the totality, there results some- thing indubitably human and therefore slightly divine, something for which it is worth the trouble of living on this earth: the absolute truth of that sexual spirit, Man. 5
