sources from which came his ideals and his never- flagging devotion to duty were first, his love of God. his priesthood, and his school. Villanova. Father Hartley came to Villanova in 1909. 54 years ago. to begin his religious studies in the Order of Saint Augustine. The qualities of keen mind, clear perception, and devotion, lead to his ordination to the priesthood in 1919. Following soon thereafter. Father was awarded a Doctorate from the Catholic University in Washington. He was placed in charge of the pro- gram of Commerce and Finance at Villanova in 1922. From 1930 until 1950, in addition to these duties, Father Hartley directed the summer session, the eve- ning and the graduate schools. Successful growth characterized all his endeavors. During the years of 1943 until his untimely death. Father held grave responsibility as a member and secretary of the Hoard of Trustees of Villanova. It may be said that Father led three lives, that of priest, an administrator, and an authority in the field of 1 finance. Throughout the years as student, priest, professor, and Dean of the School of Commerce and Finance. Father worked quietly, with no fanfare, never seeking recognition for his widespread accomplishments. His material success is written not only in the lives of so many of his students, but also in the buildings that were erected primarily because of his initiative and perseverance. Long years of selfless dedication give firm evidence 9 of Father's deep love for Villanova. It has been well said, that since the September day in 1909 when he first saw Villanova. his heart and mind never left. May we who have had the great privilege of having been associated with him. and who knew him, benefit by a rare and truly inspiring life of conviction, courage, and generosity. May God grant this great man de- serving reward and a knowledge of our appreciation and gratitude. Father Bartley died on September 7. 1962. May he rest in peace. 29
