CALIFORNIA Dear Students, You are absorbing your high school education at a critical time in the progress of the world. The Post-Sputnik age is an interesting one to experience. All the peoples of the earth are looking to the firmament with thoughts of conquest. This current crisis is a challenge to education, and it is a fanciful outlook for you. We know you are grateful to the Augustinian Fathers and laymen who are chartering your advancement through the secondary level. You are gaining not only the necessary knowledge of mundane things but you are being taught the science of Religion. Your conscience, your inner self, your religious sensibilities are being cultivated. This is, indeed, of paramount importance to you. In fact the whole man is in the process of development because you are enabled to HEX strong in muscle and brawn. So you should find yourself soon a finished youthful product poised to receive the demands of higher education, and 1ife's combat. All of us at Villanova will cherish the hallowed memories of the happy days you are spending with us. May God bless you with continued success. Sincerely in Christ, ' if Father w. R. Kirk, o.s.A. Religious education received at Villanova imparts to each student a firm foundation in the tenets of his Faith, something which will serve him in very good stead when he leaves the sheltering walls of his Alma Mater. No member of the Faculty induces anyone to feel that practices such as daily Mass and Communion or Stations of the Cross are a must They attempt to instill in all the love of God freely from the heart, and not strictly as an observance of rule or regula- tion, The real reason for their presence is to make Catholic gentlemen out of every Villanovan so that he may face Worldly desires with the singular ad- vantage of Christian philosophy. ln effect, many graces have been afforded to us because the priests on the Faculty have been earnest and zealous in dispensing the spiritual values in life. They have especially excelled in ath- letics, while at the same time, they placed three oi their members in the running for the Lions' Club oratorical contest. They have also been well repre- sented on the honor roll and did a very important part in promoting the play. Socially, they supported all dances, both here and at other schools. They were the first class to present the Senior Prom, traditionally called the Blue and White Ball, off campus. Along with this, they also became the first class to spon- sor a dinner dance. Now that they have finished three years oi high school and are preparing to enter their last and most important year, the luniors have made themselves well prepared. From all signs they have given, they will most likely stand firm in their iaith and their ideals, which they are developing at Villanova. The Sophomore Class boasts of a high representation on the honor roll, along with the fact that many of their class have taken part in all sports made available at Villanova. This has been one of the most pro- ductive years in their high school learning. At the beginning of the school year, they had a feeling of relief that their freshman year was over, and also a feeling of excite- mentg for they knew that this would be the first year that they could really apply themselves. Their studies were a little harder, and they 5, LEFT TO RIGHT: Robert Pozos, president, William Dougherty. vice president, Lance Sherman, treasurer, Michael Biernetzky, student council representative, David Martin, secretary. had a few more responsibilities, but they made up their minds to have a successful year, and did. These up-and-coming young mem- bers of the new generation have now graduated from the ranks of the un- derclassmen, and are further devel- oping their bodies, their souls, and their minds to achieve their goals in this life and in the life to come. Villanovas Iunior Varsity, under the coaching ot Wallace Franz, was a much better team than their record would indicate finishing their season with a record of one win, one tie and four losses. Due to the lack of IV. competition in the Tri- Valley League, the Kittens made cr good showing against superior opposition in other leagues. The Wildcat cagers, under the direction ot Coach Bob Heller, trotted onto the court to begin their l957-l958 sea- son with only one member of previous varsity experience, namely Tom Bralliar. Ignor- ing this handicap, they rep- resented Villanova in the an- nual Nordhoft Tournament, but did not place among the top three. Moorparlc, Thacher, and Santa Ynez were the lirst three opponents that Vil- lanova met. These games proved to be too much lor the Cats, who were tamed by superior opposition. The most exciting game ot the season took place as Vil- lanova hosted the Simi Pio- neers, who captured the game by two points. Unable to recover, the Wildcats were caught nap- ping by Santa Barbara Cath- olic and Cate.
