he More hings hange . . . Spirit! What is it? What good is it? The '87-'88 school year began with an assembly in the amphitheater. The September morning was warm and sunny, typical of the unusually mild summer that was drawing to a close. A mood of optimism and ex- citement seemed to fill the air as the largest student body in over a decade listened to the introductions of administrators and student leaders. The summer was over, but somehow it didn't seem so bad. There was a spirit in the air. Villa Park had caught it. The enthusiasm built as the days passed, carrying over into the Powder Puff assembly early in the quarter. Possibly the ugliest Pep Squad ever to thunder across the hardwood floor of the gym pranced through a few uncoordinated routines while the football team , their small bodies almost engulfed by giant shoulder pads, watched in amusement. There were many assemblies to follow throughout the year. The gym echoed with competitive yells as the freshmen tried valiantly but unsuccessfully to outdo the upper classes, but it was the early gatherings that set the tone and that revived the spirit that had somehow slipped away in the early eighties. ew ids on the lock A few new changes have occurred at Villa Park High School this year. The school has become a four year high school with many freshmen entering for the '87-'88 year. Along with the freshmen, the sophomores are here too. Now, the food lines will be even longer and the campus even more congested than it already was. Are their new faces a wanted welcome? You be the judge, but these eager young students are here to carry on the Spartan traditions of leadership, pride, and sportsmanship. One other plus is more sports teams and increased activities to supply the demands of the many new students. Along with the cheerleaders, Villa Park spirit has now surged anew with these new students and their great effort to make Villa Park High School the best. Let's hope that they've had a great year with many more ahead of them. With the seniors of '88 here to show them the way, they will undoubtedly have great high school memories. vii ' . g ' .F PA Brad Creagan, Mike Aguirre, and Brian Pearsall joke around during lunch. A Doesn't Kathy Welch look like she is enjoy- ing those chips? P The first day of school is difficult for all freshmen, especially for those students who have come from out of state like Camilla Porbe. 8 Opening
