The Mathematics department was well run at Villa Park by a group of hard working and understanding teachers. Math could be a difficult subject, but the teach- ers took away much of the prob- lems. Yet it was frustrating. Trying to understand where the x came from or went to, picturing that three dimensional figure in geometry, or thinking up a reason to add a num- ber to both sides of the equation were often problems which faced math students. Luckily, none of these problems were so severe as to cause brain damage. One often found the same intense enthusiasm during a PE class tour- nament as one saw at a CIF cham- pionship. Co-ed PE offered students classes in many dif- ferent sports, ranging from modern dance to golf to basketball. Students signed up every six weeks for their favorite activity-or their favorite coach-never having to play a sport that wasn't their strong point. When playing time came, girls often faced guys on the courts, sometimes showing them up, and sometimes making clutzy mistakes. Both sexes were usually surprised, and all in fun.
