A .9-A T' :.f'f : nf' we Ji iirifrihi l ,, I Few realized the sweat, the pain, the time, and the determi- nation that the athlete went through during the year. Sweat- ing out that final lap, extending oneself far beyond normal limits, learning to cope with pain are all factors making up the athIete's world. But there was more-so much more. Only the lone sportsman knew the exhilaration of self-lm- provement. They put up with the bursting lungs, bruises, sore muscles, and side-aches if only to experience victory just once-and sometimes not at all. This devoted group strived for excellence with each passing moment. That will to achieve brought with a camaraderie like no other-that camaraderie of fellow sufferers. The pre-dawn warm-ups and hot afternoon practices all led to that incomprehensible feeling of being first, being number one. Some never got the chance to achieve number one, yet each had his own inner challenge, his own goal. Each gave of himself towards that goal, never losing that endless hope.
