Not only did we win a game but we won our first Homecoming. Mission Viejo starts the action with a twenty-yard kick-off. Villa Park takes off and gets to the three-yard line where we fumble. l-lowever, after a couple of minutes we are back down there and Bob Rodgers manages to cross the line for six points. ln the second quarter Paul l-lart runs forty yards for a touch- down. Shortly after, Pat Mclnally recovers a fumble and scores. Meanwhile, Mission Viejo is unable to get beyond the thirty-five yard-line during the entire first half. When the half time show starts, the Spartans are leading l9-O. When the second half opens, Mission is out for revenge. ln the third quarter Bob Rodgers scores again. The extra point is classified no good, but no one seems to mind. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Mission Viejo is forced into a punting situation. When Jeff Phillips re- covers the punt, he finds a hole and manages to get through for another Spartan touchdown. Dave Luchau kicks the extra point which brought the score up to 32 for the Spartans. Mission Viejo is still unable to score. Then the balloon popped. Mission manages to get through the Villa Park defense and score not just once but twice, making the game more interesting. The final tally shows Villa Park ahead 32-13. Statistically speaking, the 'Di- alolos do not have a chance. They chalked up 56 yards at an average of l.8 yards per play. Meanwhile the Spartans gain ll4 yards at an average of 3.5 yards per play. We gain l28 yards in passing as opposed to 73 yards for Mission Viejo. PRIDE!! 444 BOYS SPORTS 23

The baTTle ground once again is The disTricT sTadium aT El Modena. AfTer a week of rigorous workouTs, Villa Park enTers The arena wiTh greaT expecTaTions, buT as The ChrisTians losT To The lions, so do The SparTans lose To The PanThers. The crowd is overwhelming. Orange sTarTs The ac- Tion wiTh a 45-yard kick-off which is reTurned T4 yards by Dave Medigovich. Then in The second auarfer, The PanThers recover a fumble and squeak Through wiTh a Touchdown and exTra poinT. l.aTer in The same quarTer, They Take advanTage of a penalTy which puTs Them Ten yards ouT, Five plays laTer, They score again. Once The exTra poinT clears, The PanThers are leading aT half- Time 14-O. The SparTans come back onTo The field afTer The half- Time ready for acTion. Villa Park sends a forTy-yard kick off down The field which is only refurned nine yards. Less Than Ten plays laTer, The PanThers were scoring again. IT was noT long, however, before Bob Grimm recovers a fumble and runs free To The end zone for a SparTan Touchdown. PaT Mclnally is unable To geT a clear shoT aT The goal and The exTra poinT is ruled no good. Then The PanThers score on The kick-Off reTurn and once again in The fourTh quarTer To bring The ToTal To 3l for The Panfhers and 6 for The SparTans. All around, iT was a game ThaT The SparTans would like To forgef. STaTisTic-wise Orange gained 5.4 yards per play rushing, while Villa Park gains only 2.7 yards. We gain 3.6 yards per pass while Orange gains 6.5 yards per passing play, neverfheless The Panfhers had 85 yards in penaITies as opposed To 35 for The SparTans. 22 BOYS SPORTS lT is The firsT day of November and Villa Park is playing Their firsT cross-Town rival, El Modena High School. This is The firsT game The SparTans have been able To play in The new sTadium. The spiriT is exTremely high on boTh sides of The field for one of The seasons mosT exciTing games. The Tension rises as Villa Park kicks off, and Then The crowd sTands sTunned as The Vanguards score seven poinis on Their firsT play, Villa Park reTurns The acTion wiTh a drive for The goal line. They are sTopped, however, and El Modena Takes over, only To score another Touchdown and lead aT The end of The firsT auarTer T4-O. The SparTans make a come- back in The second auarTer by scoring a Touchdown and exTra poinT buT This is noT unTil afTer The Vanguards have scored again. AT half Time The score is Villa Park 7, El Modena 2l. ln The Third auarTer, The SparTans sTarT Their SopwiTh Camel and reTurn The kickoff forTy-eighf yards. Three plays laTer, we score anoTher seven poinTs. We are on our way. Villa Park conTinues in iTs de- TerminaTion To keep The Vanguards from scoring again. ln facT, They do noT allow El Modena To geT beyond The TwenTy-five yard line during The Third auarTer. When The fourTh quarTer comes, The SparTan hopes are higher Than ever. AlThough we are unable To score again, we manage To keep The Vanguards from pene- TraTing any farTher Than The forTy-one yardline. Even Though The final score is 21 To 7 in favor of EI Modena, The Sparfans are able To capT'ure eighTy-seven yards in ThirTy plays for an average of 2.9 yards per play, as opposed To The Vanguard's ninefy-seven yards in forTy-one plays for an overall average of 2.1 yards per play.
