fl: ,Must ,Not Cntr Or .?alL Qar .714 One Hand ,On September 28, Villa Park meets Gahr High School at Orange Coast College in what is to be one of the most exciting games of the season. Little do we know that our hopes of victory will be answered, nor do we realize that this will be one of our two wins of the season. Villa Park starts the action with a large, 45 yard, kickoff. We keep the pace up with good blocks and tackles and hold our opponents to a slight 57 yards of running, as opposed to our own llO. In passing Gahr seems to have trouble finding receivers in the open as the Spartans do not allow one completed pass. On the other hand Villa Park gains 63 yards in the air. Out of sixteen attempts we have six completions for an average of 3.9 yards per play. ln rushing we average 4.l yards per play while holding Gahr to .9 yards. Probably the most memorable play is the thirty five yard run by Rosh Ansari for our winning touchdown. The final score is Villa Park 7, Gahr 6. 20 BOYS SPORTS Villa Park l-ligh School opened its i968 football season against Pacifica High School on September 20. Although it is a cold evening the Spartan spirit is up for the first battle. The game is technically considered non-league, but these first games are usually a good example of how the season will turn out. This is a fair representation of the Spartan season. We lost. Nevertheless, we did play a good game. We have 181 rushing yards as opposed to Pacifica's 69. We have 57 plays to their 28, and we averaged l.2 yards more per play than our opponents. For some unknown reason, however, they seemed to gain a few more points than we did. The final score, Pacifica l2 Villa Park 7. Perhaps the most outstanding play of the game is a forty yard run by Bob Rodgers. Even though he could not make the touch- down, he set it up for Dave Medigovich who ran seven yards to cross the end zone during the third quarter. I xy-s. xi. The excitement rises as the two teams ramble onto the field, Villa Park kicks off to start the action in the worst game they are to play all season. Things looked good in the first quarter when Pat Mclnally kicks a field goal lighting up the scoreboard with three points for the Spartans. The second quarter sees Laguna Beach make a touchdown and pull into the lead. The score at half time is Laguna Beach 7, Villa Park 3. ln the third quarter, the Spartan defense fails to stop the Artists from making fourteen more points, In the fourth quarter Laguna rounded out its score with seven more points. The final score showed the small, but mighty, team from the beach ahead 28 to 3. The high point of the game for the Spartan crowd comes when we blocked a punt on the seven yard line and go on to make a field goal. The statistics show that we average a slight 2.5 yards per play against 8.25 yards per play for the Artists. Due to the fact that the new district stadium is still not completed, the Spartan Varsity travels to Laguna Beach Stadium to play the Knights of Foothill High School. It is so foggy this evening that at times, the ball seems to disappear. Foothill starts the game with a long, 55 yard, kickoff which Bob Rodgers returns twenty yards. The game remains scoreless until the third quarter when the scoreboard registers 7 points for the Knights. The Spartans quickly recover in the fourth quarter but not quite enough as our attempt for the extra point is blocked. Overall the Qame was extremely close. Villa Park gains on the average 3.3 yards per play rushing against 3.2 yards per run for the Knights. ln passing the Spartans have 44 yards at an average of 2.7 yards per pass while Foothill had 21 yards at an average of 2.3 yards per pass. The most exciting time in the game comes in the fourth quarter when we finally move out in one of the best drives of the season. It was in this movement that we were able to score our touch- down. However, the extra point is ruled no good and the final score is Foothill 7, Villa Park 6. Once again the Spartans are defeated on Dad's Night. On October eighteenth the Spartans travel to San Clemente to play the Tritons of San Clemente High School. It is a cold damp evening when Villa Park arrives, and it is to be colder when we leave. San Clemente starts the action with a forty-five yard kick- off which Greg Concannon returns twenty-five yards. The Spartans dominate the first quarter with an interception by Carlos Sargent in which the Tritons lose twenty yards. Then in the second quarter Villa Park goes on the war path and gain ninety yards at an average of 6.5 yards per play. On the two yard line, we fumble and the Tritons recover. Shortly thereafter they fumble and we recover and go on to make a touchdown. The Spartans lead 6-O. lt remains so until the fourth quarter when San Clemente squeaks by with a pass and goes on for the six points. The Spartan at- tempt to block the extra point fails and the Tritons lead 7-6. With less than a minute to go, Villa Park attempts a field goal with no success. The final score is San Clemente 7, Villa Park 6. The Spartans gain l76 yards rushing as opposed to 76 forthe Tritons. ln passing, Villa Park gains 76 yards against 65 for San Cle- mente. Although we dominate in yardage we lack three points of winning. 'tfihufn BOYS SPORTS 21
